Kôji Wakamatsu
Film Review: The Escape (2025) by Masao Adachi
Kôji Wakamatsu
On January 26, 2024, it was revealed that Satoshi Kirishima, a fugitive wanted in connection with a series of corporate bombings and a member of the East Asia Anti-Japan Armed Front, had been hospitalized in Kanagawa Prefecture. He had been living under an alias but came forward, saying, “I want to face the end with my real name.” Kirishima passed away three days after the news broke, and due to his death, he was not prosecuted for his suspected involvement in the bombing of the Korea Industrial and Economic Research Institute building, for which he had been on the national wanted list under charges of violating explosives control regulations.

This year saw two films tackling the his life, both directed by former associates of Koji Wakamatsu, whose ties with Jra and Pflp are well documented. Banmei Takahashi created “I Am Kirishima,” while Masao Adachi, who was more deeply involved in the armed...

All 6 seasons of What We Do In The Shadows, ranked worst to best
Image
One part The Office, one part Dracula, and several parts the 2014 What We Do In The Shadows movie from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, this charming FX sitcom has been chugging along for the past six years, reliably producing season after season of quality comedy with a horror twist. What We Do In The Shadows occasionally earned a viral moment or a spike in popularity, but mostly it sank or swam by doing what sitcoms always did: introducing a great cast of memorable characters, finding hilarious people to play them, and then making merciless fun of them episode after episode, year after year.

The only minor difference is that most of the characters here happen to be vampires: ancient lunkhead Nandor (Kayvan Novak), quick-to-anger Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), smooth-talking Lazslo (Matt Berry), the boring-on-purpose energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), and Nandor's long-suffering familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), who is more competent...

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Showrunner Promises Final Season Won’t Be ‘Sad and Sentimental’
Image
No matter what happens on “What We Do in the Shadows,” you know you’re going to laugh until it hurts.

The same was true for the show’s Season 6 panel at Paleyfest in New York Citayyyy on October 19, when showrunner Paul Simms and stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, and Mark Proksch discussed the final season and how it felt to conclude the story of their Staten Island vampires.

“We just felt like better too soon than too late, and we didn’t want to be doing it after we used everything up,” Simms said of deciding to end the show with Season 6. “We knew it was going to be sad, but that also gave us a clear direction for the season. We thought about all the other shows [that have] done final seasons, and shows that are like a ‘very special final season.’ We were like ‘No; we want to make...

Olivia Colman in The Lost Daughter (2021)
6 Films to Watch if you liked “The Lost Daughter” on Netflix
Olivia Colman in The Lost Daughter (2021)
It’s always fascinating to know the reasons why actors decide to go behind the camera for the first time. After all, the subject must have hit a very personal part of their being so as to take up the extraneous effort of mounting an entire story to the screen in a language that is mostly foreign to them. So, when Maggie Gyllenhall was asked why she decided to make The Lost Daughter (now streaming on Netflix), her answer assured me more than anything else.

She said that when she first read Elena Ferrante’s book that goes by the same name, her first line of thought was “Oh my god! This woman is so fucked up and I totally related to her. So am I so fucked up?” As funny as that sounds, the reason feels palpable. I mean, I have always wanted to see a mother on screen...

Gemma Arterton Says She Had To Resist “Pressure” From Director To Film Unplanned Sex Scene
Image
Gemma Arterton has revealed that she once had to resist pressure from an unnamed director to film a sex scene that was written to take place off-camera.

Arterton, who has performed alongside Daniel Craig in James Bond movie Quantum of Solace and is currently starring in The Critic, said she “flat out” rejected the director’s demand.

In an interview with The Radio Times, the actress said: “I remember being on a set once and the director said, ‘You’re going to shag on the bed.’ And I said, ‘No, this scene was written for us to be off-screen, so you just hear the noises. I’d never have accepted the role if it was going to be filmed.’

“He put pressure on us on the day. The other actor, God bless him, was mortified. There were very high-profile people there.”

Arterton said she only felt able to push back...

Walt Disney Concocted A Scheduling Deal After Eavesdropping On Kurt Russell
Image
When Kurt Russell was 12 years old, he faced a fork in his career path. His father, Bing Russell, owned a minor league baseball club, but made the bulk of his money as an actor; the elder Russell played Deputy Clem Foster in the successful TV Western "Bonanza." Kurt, exposed equally to baseball and acting, began following both his father's paths simultaneously, becoming equally interested in being a star little league player or an on-screen child star.

It was around the age of 12 that the young Kurt Russell attracted the attention of Walt Disney. He had already appeared in several hit TV shows like "Dennis the Menace," "Lost in Space," "The Virginian," "Gilligan's Island," and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," and Disney saw nothing but potential for the lad. Most notably, Russell had starred as the title character in "The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters," a Western series based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel,...

‘Close to You’ Review: Elliot Page Makes an Affecting Big-Screen Return in a Fragile Homecoming Drama
Image
“Close to You” marks a reintroduction for Elliot Page, a screen presence at once warmly familiar and sharply redefined, finally established on his own terms. In his first film role since coming out as a trans man, the actor has evidently brought much of his own identity and experience to this sensitively observed story of a trans man cagily reunited with his family after a five-year period of estrangement. But Page’s performance isn’t moving merely for whatever parallels it might hold to his life: Rather, it’s a reminder of what a deft and perceptive actor he can be, capable of both naked emotional candor and acidic wit — both assets to a script that sometimes errs on the side of caution.

British director Savage is known for his improvisatory collaborations with actors, which recently drew career-best work from Gemma Arterton in the 2017 feature “The Escape,” and extended to the TV project “I Am…...

10 Moments From The O.C. That Define The Show
Image
The O.C. dealt with various issues such as mental health, addiction, and love, making it a staple in conversations about teen dramas. Key moments throughout the seasons shape and define the main characters, leading to some of the biggest moments in the show overall. Marissa's death was a defining moment in the show, impacting the characters' lives and plot lines for the following season.

This year, The O.C. celebrated its 20-year anniversary, and years after its finale, a few moments remain definitive of the series. Through many ups and downs in its four seasons, The O.C. has remained a staple in conversations about teen drama shows in the 2000s. The story surrounds a group of four friends and their families in the rich community of Newport Beach and, while not always handled in the best way, the show deals with various issues such as mental health, addiction, and love.

Dominic Savage at an event for Une femme heureuse (2017)
Close to You review – Elliot Page anchors well-intentioned yet patchy drama
Dominic Savage at an event for Une femme heureuse (2017)
The actor makes a convincing big screen comeback as a man visiting his family for the first time since transitioning, but effective moments are offset by clunkiness

Dominic Savage’s work tends to focus on people, usually women, facing some form of disruptive challenge to their everyday life, specific and stressful and never anything but utterly believable. He drew out Gemma Arterton’s greatest performance in 2017’s Toronto premiere The Escape as a deeply unsettled woman wanting out of her responsibilities as wife and mother. His Channel 4 anthology series I Am… has introduced a range of characters at an intersection, from a devastating Vicky McClure grappling with her partner’s emotional abuse to recent Bafta winner Kate Winslet as a mother struggling with a daughter crippled by social media addiction. His preference for often mundane naturalism, with dialogue usually improvised, has teased out grounded, unshowy performances and unusual, instinctive...

‘Close to You’ Review: Elliot Page Gets Vulnerable in Muddled Coming-of-Self Tale
Image
Sam (Elliot Page) has been dreading this day for weeks, maybe entire years: The young trans man is heading home for a long-delayed family visit, back to the sleepy Canadian suburb he fled years earlier, this time more fully himself than ever, even if his own flesh and blood are — at least, he suspects — loathe to fully accept him as he is. And who is he?

In “Close to You,” we eventually learn that Sam is on a delayed calendar, stunted by the years he spent struggling before his somewhat recent transition, though crisper details are harder to come by. At one point, he mentions off-handedly that he graduated high school nearly twenty years ago (Page turned 36 a few weeks after production on the film wrapped), but he’s living a life closer to that of someone who just graduated. He lives in a friend’s house, he’s finding...

Why Haley and Andy Broke Up On Modern Family
Image
It was a shock to viewers when Haley Dunphy and Andy Bailey broke up on Modern Family. After Andy was hired by Haley’s family member as a nanny, the two spent months getting to know each other and eventually became close friends. When romantic feelings between the two developed, they had to put their friendship on pause because Andy was engaged to someone else. This all changed, however, when their feelings for each other were stronger than Andy’s feelings for his fiancée.

Andy eventually called it quits with his fiancée and focused on Haley as the new woman in his life. Things were rocky at first since he wanted to take things slow, but slow was good for Haley since she was used to boyfriends who wanted the complete opposite. Andy helped Haley with her job, and Haley prepped Andy to work for her dad, Phil. Andy had...

Snowpiercer's Original Ending Has a Totally Different Message
Image
While many fans know Snowpiercer from the acclaimed 2013 film or the following TV adaptation, the story originally comes from a 1982 French graphic novel titled Le Transperceneige. However, rather than the vicious class-based satire of the on-screen versions, the comic is about the dangers of climate change, leading to a very different ending.

Le Transperceneige was written by French comic book writer Jacques Lob and artist Jean-Marc Rochette, while the popular 2013 film Snowpiercer was directed by Bong Joon-ho and starred Chris Pine as Curtis, a very loose adaptation of the main character of Snowpiercer Volume 1 - The Escape, Proloff. To be clear, the climate crisis and issues of classism are heavily present in both versions of Snowpiercer, but the incredibly depressing ending to Le Transperceneige shows how the original story was a worst-case-scenario exploration of the horrors of climate collapse, intended to engage with an audience who were far less familiar...

“1976,” the awaited first feature of Chile’s Manuela Martelli, has closed first new major territories for sales company Luxbox before its world premiere in Directors’ Fortnight later this upcoming week.

The film is produced out of Chile by writer-directors Omar Zúñiga (“The Strong Ones”) and Dominga Sotomayor (“Too Late to Die Young”) at auteur-focused Chile-based Cinestación (“Too Late to Die Young”) as well as Alejandra Garcia and Andrés Wood, another celebrated Chilean director (“Violeta Went to Heaven”) at Wood Productions. Shows You Didn’t Know Were Based on Comic Books: Where to Read the Graphic Novels
Image
Products featured are independently selected by our editorial team and we may earn a commission from purchases made from our links.

It’s easy (and mostly correct) to assume that the majority of superhero television is based on comics. But Hollywood loves existing IP, which means there are plenty of other series on TV right now based on comic books or graphic novels that have nothing to do with super powers or saving the day.

Comics are much more than caped crusaders — graphic novels run the same genre gamut as literary novels, from journalism to sci-fi and plenty in between. Below, we’ve rounded up a bunch of TV series that you might not have realized were based on comic books. Read on to find out where you can watch each show and, more importantly, where to find the graphic novels that inspired them.

2018 British Independent Film Awards: ‘The Favourite’ leads with a lucky 13 nominations
Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Olivia Colman in La Favorite (2018)
Nominations for the 21st British Independent Film Awards were announced on Oct. 31 in London. To be eligible for consideration, a film must be intended for theatrical release, produced or co-produced by a British company and have a budget of under 10 million pounds. This year’s contenders are led by “The Favourite” with a lucky 13 nominations followed by “American Animals” with 11, “Beast” with 10 and ““You Were Never Really Here” with eight. All four of these compete for Best British Independent Film as does “Disobedience.” (Scroll down to see the complete list of nominations)

Because “The Favourite” counts both British and American companies among its producers, it was also eligible for the Gotham Awards where it reaped three bids. While those kudos are honoring the cast as a whole, the BIFAs singled out leading lady Olivia Colman and supporting players Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz for nominations. Weisz also earned a Best...

‘The Favourite’ Tops Bifa Nominations for British Independent Films
Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Olivia Colman in La Favorite (2018)
Yorgos Lamthimos’ twisted period piece “The Favourite” led all films in nominations for the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa), which were announced on Wednesday in London.

The black comedy, which stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in a tale of 18th century palace intrigue in England, was nominated in 13 categories, two shy of the record set last year by “Lady Macbeth.”

Its nominations come on the heels of three nominations and one award at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which means that the film from a Greek director has been accepted as an American independent film by one awards body and as a British indie by another.

‘The Favourite’ Leads British Independent Film Awards Nominations – Full List
Rachel Weisz in La Favorite (2018)
Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice Special Grand Jury Prize winner The Favourite leads nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 13 in its court. The twisted take on the British monarchy and period cinema, which Fox Searchlight releases November 23 in North America, has nods for Venice Best Actress laureate Olivia Colman as well as for Best Film, Director, Screenplay and for its supporting cast Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. The latter is also up for Best Actress in Oscar winner Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience, which likewise scored a Best Film nom and put Rachel McAdams in the Supporting Actress category.

Following The Favourite is Bart Layton’s heist pic American Animals with 11 nominations, Michael Pearce’s Beast with 10 and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here scooping eight. Each is also competing in the Best British Independent Film race.

Bifa noted today that the nominations list demonstrates a record year for female representation, with over 40% of the individual nominations recognizing women in the industry across directing, writing, producing, performance and craft. Female nominees make up over 50% of the talent nominated in Best British Independent Film and dominate both Most Promising Newcomer and Breakthrough Producer.

Ramsay notably continues her long association with Bifa, scoring her third nomination for Best Screenplay and her second for Best Director. With her You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix scores his second Bifa Best Actor nomination for his role as a tortured hitman in the psychological noir thriller.

Joe Cole (A Prayer Before Dawn), Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince), Charlie Plummer (Lean On Pete) and Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) round out Best Actor. The Best Actress category also features Gemma Arterton (The Escape), Maxine Peake (Funny Cow) and Jessie Buckley (Beast).

The Bifa ceremony will be held on Sunday December 2 at London’s Old Billingsgate. Below is the full list of nominations.

‘The Favourite’ Leads the Field in the British Independent Film Award Nominations
Rachel Weisz in La Favorite (2018)
Yorgos Lanthimos’ acclaimed period drama “The Favourite,” and Bart Layton’s heist movie “American Animals,” have landed the most British Independent Film Award nominations this year, with 13 and 11 apiece. “You Were Never Really Here” also put in a strong showing with 8 noms.

Bifa has made strides to ensure its voters for its awards are mindful of their influences and this year instigated a BFI-backed unconscious bias program for its voting members, juries, committees, and board.

In a record year for female representation – over 40% of nominations in the individual categories are women – Olivia Colman is nominated for best actress for her role as Queen Anne in “The Favourite.” Her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are both up for best supporting actress. The latter also landed a best actress nom for her performance in “Disobedience.”

“The Favourite” also puts in an impressive performance in the technical categories and is nominated...
