Oshi No Ko Is a Pop Idol Anime...

Anime-loving Netflix subscribers are set to have an excellent March this year, as the highest-rated anime series of all time will soon join the streaming service. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End will reportedly make its Netflix premiere on March 1, 2025, alongside other anime favorites.

According to the Coming Soon tab on Netflix, the critically acclaimed fantasy series will be added to the streaming service this March. A social media user named @/DanotazMedia shared screenshots of the Netflix anime announcements on X (formerly Twitter), which were later backed up by What's on Netflix's March 2025 update. In addition to Frieren, Netflix will also receive Cells At Work! Code Black, the spinoff series of 2018’s Cells at Work -- also recently added on Netflix. Feb. 27, 2025, will also see the addition of Puniru wa Kawaii Slime (Puniru Is a Cute Slime), which premiered on Oct. 6, 2024.

The 7th Annual Global Demand Awards have named the most in-demand anime of 2024 worldwide, beating out several other heavy hitters from the year, including the likes of One Piece and Solo Leveling.

The Global Demand Awards are produced by Parrot Analytics, which touts the Awards as "Entertainment's Only data-backed awards show." The awards are entirely determined by global fan activity with no judges or voting committees involved, using the year's demand data captured over the full year. The finalists were determined using data collected between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31, 2024, although the winner was decided using the full year's worth of data. The finalists considered were My Hero Academia, Solo Leveling, One Piece, Demon Slayer and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, with My Hero Academia claiming the title.

The Berlin Film Festival’s 2025 Panorama section will launch with Welcome Home Baby, a psychological horror film from Austrian director Andreas Prochaska, leading a lineup of 34 films from 28 countries. The section head Michael Stütz unveiled the full program that addresses societal fractures, health systems, and democratic instability on Thursday.

Prochaska’s film reimagines the homeland horror genre as a response to 1950s German-language cinema. The selection continues its genre focus with the Norwegian body horror The Ugly Stepsister, Turkish political thriller Confidante, and Taiwanese gangster narrative Silent Sparks.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep will premiere on Netflix on Feb. 11, 2025. This new animated movie is set within the same universe as the live-action Witcher series on Netflix. However, American voice actor Doug Cockle is reprising his role as Geralt for the upcoming movie. Cockle played the titular hero in the video game trilogy developed by CD Projekt Red (Cyberpunk 2077) from 2007 to 2015.

Sony is in discussion with manga and anime publishing conglomerate Kadokawa, according to reports. As one of the biggest manga and light novel publishers in Japan, this would represent a major shake-up within the industry that could have lasting effects.

Kadokawa will be familiar to anime and manga fans as the publisher behind some of the bigger hits in recent years, such as Delicious in Dungeon and Oshi no Ko, to name a few. Kadokawa has a presence in several other industries as well, including video games and anime, but is primarily known for its publishing division. Sony, of course, is one of the largest Japanese companies in the world, and already have a presence in the world of anime and manga through subsidiaries like Aniplex, as well as owning the anime streaming platform Crunchyroll, and formerly Funimation.

2024 has been a great year for anime thus far, with brand-new hits like My Deer Friend Nokotan and Delicious in Dungeon gaining traction alongside established hits like One Piece and My Hero Academia. Recently, a prominent Japanese review service revealed which 10 anime works that were released in the first half of 2024 were the most popular among its users.

Filmarks, one of Japan's largest media review sites, allows users to rate works based on a star scale of one to five. Per PR Times, Filmarks has now released its official "Anime Rankings for the First Half of 2024," which only counts series that premiered or had seasonal continuations in 2024. The list includes a number of works that have gained large audiences outside of Japan, such as My Hero Academia and Black Butler. However, these ratings ultimately shed some interesting light on the differences that exist between Japan's viewer base and the worldwide anime community.

Fry, Leela and Bender are back. Hulu has unveiled the trailer for Season 12 of the revival of “Futurama,” set to premiere July 29 on the streamer.

The crew embarks on different adventures in the new season, including birthday party games to the death, A.I. friends and enemies, the next chapter in Fry and Leela’s romance and more.

Jim Backus' first major acting gig was playing a snotty millionaire named Dexter Hayes on the 1940 radio serial "Society Girl." This was to kick off a decades-long career in radio, film, and television, wherein Backus invented multiple indelible characters that remain a part of the pop fabric to this very day. He appeared on "The Jack Benny Program" and even briefly had his own TV show, "The Jim Backus Show" in 1957. He famously played the voice of Mr. Magoo from 1949 until his death in 1989, and starred in "Rebel Without a Cause." He was adept at playing clueless weirdos and self-absorbed egotists, although he had a great deal of comedic range. Be sure to listen to his hit comedy single "Delicious!" sometime. A (non-isekai) fantasy light novel series is set to receive an anime adaptation in 2024.

The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids is the latest light novel and manga series to be turned into an anime. Announced with the latest chapter of the series' manga adaptation, the anime will be the first such production from Studio Polon. Mitsutaka Noshitani and Taihei Nagai (who both worked on the series Even a Dad Still Wants It...) serve as the director and character designer, respectively, while Hitomi Amamiya (known for Merc Storia: The Apathetic Boy and the Girl in a Bottle) is handling the scripts. Musical conglomerate Victor Entertainment is in charge of the anime's score. The reveal coincides with the upcoming show's website launch, giving audiences a glimpse at what the series will entail.

Palace Cinemas national programming director Kim Petalas will step down from his role in late December after some 30 years with the company.

However, while he is leaving to spend more time with his family, he will continue to advise the exhibitor in his semi-retirement.

Of his decision, the industry veteran – also the director of the British Film Festival – tells If: “I felt that it was time, after such a long innings, to allow somebody else to come in with some fresh ideas, and for me to assist and help out wherever I can.

“It’s hard to leave an industry and in particular, an organisation, that I just love so much. I’ll do anything in the background to assist Palace moving forward.”

Petalas has always had an “incredible passion” for film, and started at Palace developing the group booking business, before stepping into the programming director role some 28 years ago.

The summer movie season may be winding down but Amazon Prime still has a hit or two up its sleeve in August 2021.

Amazon’s list new arrivals this month is highlighted by Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon A Time. That may be a mouthful of a name but it’s a big deal in the anime world. Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.

But beyond the Prime Video originals, the Amazon library content added to the service next month is vast and impressive. Among the major movies coming to Prime Video include “Aliens,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Jaws,” “Moneyball,” and “Predator.” Meanwhile, IMDb TV, the free service that users can access without a corresponding Amazon Prime subscription, will host “Apollo 13,” “La La Land,” and “Ghostbusters” among many other big titles.

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.

Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.

As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Amazon Prime Video has a whole load of new content coming this November, and the best thing about the large haul is that all tastes are accounted for, so whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll have a lot of options. From Christmas flicks to action films to some classic sci-fi and horror, subscribers will find much to enjoy from what’s hitting Prime next month.

Irish actor Ruairi O’Connor will play rock ‘n’ roll icon Buddy Holly in the biopic “Clear Lake” with a tentative production start date set for the spring.

O’Connor, who stars as a young King Henry VIII in the Starz miniseries “The Spanish Princess,” was selected following a six-month search by the producers and casting directors at Presser/Well Casting to find the right actor who both resembled Holly and could handle vocals and instrumentation on classic songs such as “Everyday,” “That’ll Be the Day” and “Not Fade Away.”

The BMG-backed “Clear Lake” will helmed by Bruce Beresford, who received Oscar nominations for the “Breaker Morant” script and for directing “Tender Mercies.” He also directed “Driving Miss Daisy,” which won the Academy Award for best picture. Producers are Rick French (“Not Without Hope”) of Prix Productions and Stuart Benjamin of Stuart Benjamin Productions.

Chef Floyd Cardoz, who won Season 3 of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, died Wednesday due to complications from the coronavirus. He was 59.

Hunger Inc. Hospitality, the company that Cardoz co-founded, confirmed his death in a statement, sharing that he had “tested positive for Covid-19, in USA, on March 18 and was being treated for the same at [New Jersey’s] Mountainside Medical Center.”

The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.

David Glasser’s 101 Studios and U.K. indie producer Seven Seas Films are partnering to co-produce drama series “The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe,” detailing the turbulent final months of the star’s life before her death in 1962.

Based on Keith Badman’s provocative tell-all “The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe: The Shocking True Story,” the series marks the first-ever film or TV project to be endorsed by Authentic Brands Group (Abg), owner of the Marilyn Monroe Estate. X-Men’s Famke Janssen has been added to the cast of Danis Tanovic’s ‘The Postcard Killings’ alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The film is a chilling crime story, following Jacob Kanon (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a hardened New York Detective, in search of the person responsible for the murder of his only daughter. Across Europe, newlywed couples are being targeted in a string of bizarre homicides that leave the young victims’ bodies looking like they have been staged.

Janssen takes on the role of Valerie Kanon, the mother of their now deceased daughter.

Joining Janssen and Morgan on the cast are Denis O’Hare, Naomi Battrick (Jamestown, A Very English Scandal), Ruairi O’Connor and Cush Jumbo.

The film’s cross-country focus is also highlighted by an extended cast that includes Sallie Harmsen, Eva Röse and Joachim Król.

Famke Janssen has joined Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the cast of crime thriller “The Postcard Killings.” Variety has been given the first-look image from the movie.

Morgan plays Jacob Kanon, the New York detective intent on capturing his daughter’s murderer. Janssen plays Valerie Kanon, the mother of their now deceased daughter.

Across Europe, newlywed couples are being targeted in a string of bizarre killings that leave the young victims’ bodies looking like the murders have been staged.

Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanovic, who won an Oscar for “No Man’s Land,” and Berlin Grand Jury winner “Death in Sarajevo,” directs the pic.

The film is an adaptation of James Patterson and Liza Marklund bestselling novel. It is produced by Good Films Collective, and is being sold in Cannes by Christian Mercuri’s Capstone.

As well as Morgan and Janssen, the film features Denis O’Hare, Naomi Battrick, Ruairi O’Connor and Cush Jumbo.

BBC Studios, the BBC’s production and commercial arm, has teamed up with Dan Sefton and Simon Lupton’s U.K. indie producer Seven Seas Films to develop the new show. It has the working tile “The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe” and will be based on parts of Keith Badman’s book “The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe: The Shocking True Story.”

Monroe, who died in 1962 at age 36, remains the subject of enduring fascination. The producers said the series would cover a period in which her behavior became increasingly erratic as her dependence on alcohol and medication caused her glittering film career to plunge.

Acorn TV has acquired Dutch disappearance drama The Oldenheim Twelve from Endemol Shine International.

The North American Svod service has picked up the twelve-part series, which was originally commissioned by Dutch broadcaster RTL4.

The show, which was written by Lex Passchier and Martin van Steijn and directed by Anne van der Linden, tells the story of the disappearance of a teenage girl, which in turn leads to a series of bizarre experiences. After 16-year-old Nine disappears one summer evening, a second inhabitant of Oldenheim disappears and it doesn’t stop there, with several other people from the village community disappearing. Is there a serial killer at large or is something supernatural going on? RTL4 has already ordered a second season.

The U.S. deal was struck by Matt Creasey, Evp Sales and Acquisitions, while Endemol Shine International has also sold the drama to Wowwow in Japan and Showjet and Ivi.
