1983’s Sleepaway Camp is a cult classic, a slasher film made in the vein of Friday the 13th (but with a camp full of campers), with some clever kills and a controversial twist ending that stands as one of the most shocking in the genre’s history. Like most horror films, it did well enough to warrant a follow-up, 1988’s Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers. Not only is the sequel delightfully unhinged, but it has a surprising connection to none other than the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen, the subject of the 2024 documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. Picking up from where Felissa Rose left off, Bruce’s sister Pamela Springsteen takes over the role of Angela Baker, one of the genre's most prolific killers.

Women Are Redefining Cinema– And the World is Taking Notice
Since the beginning of time, Hollywood’s narrative was largely led by the perceptions of males, with women limited to their work. However, times have changed– a seismic shift has taken place, and now women are at the core of this revolution. These trailblazing voices are much more than just proving their work in front of the camera but also behind the scenes, shaping the future of film. Whether through producing, directing, or starring in blockbuster franchises, women are resetting the rules of Hollywood, and the world is starting to notice.
With Greta Gerwig at the helm, 'Barbie' defied all expectations, breaking the billion-dollar barrier at the box office. But the film wasn’t just a commercial success; it struck a chord with audiences through its visionary, female-driven narrative that deeply resonated across generations. What many initially assumed...

The stream of public domain horror continues, this time it’s E.C. Segar’s iconic sailor Popeye who gets turned into a killer. The script by Harry Boxley, who has already scripted a trio of similar films, Piglet, Mouse of Horrors and Cinderella’s Curse re-imagines him as a boy born with huge forearms and freakish strength who accidentally kills one of his tormentors leading to the death of his parents and the young lad seemingly drowning.
Years later we find out he’s still alive as he kills off a trio of obnoxious YouTubers. From there we join Tara (Emily Rose Mogilner; 500) who is about to inherit the land where the house stood so she along with her boyfriend Dylan, Nick (Bruno Cryan; Treeline Essex Girls), Kathy,...

If you're a slasher fan, there are many reasons to be happy right now. After being looked down upon for years, the subgenre is surging back thanks to recent releases like Thanksgiving and the Terrifier trilogy. This month we were presented with another promising slasher entry in Heart Eyes, directed by Josh Ruben. Heart Eyes has a clever premise, as a masked killer strikes every Valentine's Day, killing couples. When the killer choses Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding) as his (her? their?!) next targets, what we get is a horror movie that purposely leans into romantic comedy tropes, as Ally and Jay begin to fall in love while they run for their lives. Ruben has said that he modeled his film after Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, but, honestly, it's styled more like Scream, while falling short of both because of one big, fatal flaw: Heart Eyes...

Back in 2022, we got word that a new Friday the 13th TV series was in the works for Peacock. Now, we finally have our first bit of casting news, and it seems to have gone over very well with fans of the classic slasher franchise.
According to Jeff Sneider, Linda Cardellini is in early talks to take on the key role of Jason Voorhees' mother, Pamela, who was played by the late Betsy Palmer in the original.
Sneider believes that production is scheduled to commence this summer.
"Cardellini will soon begin filming HBO’s dark comedy series Dtf St. Louis with Jason Bateman and David Harbour, and I imagine that she’ll segue to Crystal Lake after that — and most likely this summer."
Brad Caleb Kane (Welcome to Derry) came on board as showrunner when Bryan Fuller parted ways with the project last year.

The long-gestating Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake that's in the works from A24 seems to be back on track after the departure of showrunner Bryan Fuller last year caused it to undergo a complete overhaul. Brad Caleb Kane, who recently wrapped production on the It prequel series Welcome to Derry, is now running the show, and we have our first bit of casting news that Linda Cardellini is in talks to play Pamela Voorhees.
The news comes by way of industry insider Jeff Sneider (via Bloody Disgusting), so take it with a grain of salt right now until it's been confirmed by other sources, but if true, Cardellini would be the first official cast member for Crystal Lake. First announced in 2022, the show is described as an "expanded prequel" to the popular slasher franchise, and will focus on not only Pamela, but her son Jason as well.

Back in October, we heard that Rachel McAdams was in talks to reteam with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi on the 20th Century Studios horror thriller Send Help, which Raimi will be producing and directing. Since then, McAdams has been joined in the cast by Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Chris Pang (Interior Chinatown). Now, Deadline reports that Dennis Haysbert (24) has also landed a role in the film – but details on the character he’ll be playing have not been revealed.
Back in 2007, it was rumored that Sam Raimi would be producing a fantasy film with a screenplay written by Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th 2009 writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. “The Alabama Solution” is one of the most powerful exposés of the inhumanity of the American prison system I’ve ever seen. Directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman, the movie is a scalding portrait of life on the inside that exerts a grip worthy of a thriller. It’s an investigative documentary, filmed over five years, much of it in and around the Easterling Correctional Facility in Southeast Alabama, that doesn’t merely show us the chronic abuse of prisoners. It uncovers a culture of sanctified lawlessness. And the way “The Alabama Solution” reveals this, peeling away layers of a systemic cover-up, becomes as dramatic as the crimes it’s about.
The movie follows in the incendiary footsteps of documentaries like Ava DuVernay’s “13th” and Liz Garbus and Jonathan Stack’s “The Farm: Angola, USA” and Stanley Nelson’s “Attica,” building on their insights. And it infiltrates the...

Emmy-nominated and Oscar-shortlisted documentarian Catherine Gund’s new film “Paint Me a Road Out of Here” tells the story of how art and the women’s prison system intersect. Gund centers on the legacy of late artist Faith Ringgold, whose 1971 painting “For the Women’s House” made it from Rikers Island to the Brooklyn Museum. The 50-year journey for Ringgold’s masterpiece to be placed in a museum is at the crux of the feature. Ringgold died in 2024; she was 93.
The official synopsis reads: “A great painting tells a compelling story. When its provenance deepens that story, it becomes an extraordinary and impactful performance piece. Emmy-nominated and Oscar-shortlisted documentarian and activist Catherine Gund tracks the labyrinthine ordeal born by Faith Ringgold’s 1971 painting ‘For the Women’s House’ — originally created for the women incarcerated on Rikers Island, then relegated to mishandling, defacing, and deep storage. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez could be about to sweep awards season. The main trio of actresses that drive the story are nominated in the early rounds of red carpets and awards ceremonies, namely the Golden Globes — with ten noms — as well as the BAFTAs — where it leads the longlist with Conclave.
After entering the conversation in May 2024, the Spanish musical crime comedy arrived on Netflix last November. For all the details about the work that stars Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and more, read below:
What is Emilia Pérez about?
The story follows Saldaña’s Rita, a lawyer who is overqualified but also overlooked at her large law firm, which aims more just to get criminals out of trouble than to actually serve them justice. Most of the Friday the 13th Movies Share the Same Glaring Mistake (& It Goes Right Over Fans' Heads)
Friday the 13th is one of the most famous horror franchises of all time. Millions of fans are familiar with the story of Jason Voorhees, a hockey mask wearing murderer with a machete. When Jason was 11 years old, he accidentally drowned at Camp Crystal Lake when the counselors weren't paying attention. He swears his revenge as a result, and in each movie, he ups the ante with creative, brutal kills, often of partying teenagers.
Not counting the original where his mother Pamela Voorhees was the killer, Jason has been the main antagonist throughout the Friday the 13th series. There are 12 movies in the franchise to date, but interestingly, fans have overlooked a glaring detail about most of the entries. Only one-third of the films actually take place on Friday the 13th. The movies that are set on the right date include the 1980 original, Part 6: Jason Lives, Part 7: The New Blood,...

Director/producer Sean S. Cunningham has admitted that his 1980 slasher film "Friday the 13th" was a deliberate effort to imitate the style and success of John Carpenter's "Halloween," which had come out only two years prior. Cunningham tried to copt Carpenter's "killer's eye perspective" camera angles, and it's no coincidence that both films take place on dates famous for horror, bad luck, and death. Cunningham's gambit was successful, though, and his $550,000 movie ended up making nearly $60 million at the box office. It also spawned 11 sequels, many of which came to define the horror trends of the '80s. Although none of the "Friday the 13th" movies are particularly beloved by critics, they are a gestalt-defining phenomenon.
Holiday-themed horror films began popping up regularly in theaters. The years after "Friday the 13th" saw the release of "April Fool's Day," "New Year's Evil," "Prom Night," and "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

Ava DuVernay said the United States is “run by criminals” while reflecting on the timely resonance of her Oscar-nominated documentary “13th” during an on-stage conversation with Rosalie Varda at the Marrakech Film Festival.
The politically-engaged filmmaker and activist denounced a double standard in the U.S. judicial system, saying “that criminality is seen as completely different than a Black kid on the corner who might sell marijuana. And so, you know, the Black kid is in prison for years and the criminals get reelected and make millions of dollars and sell electric cars.”
She said “13th” was meant to address “that idea of who is criminal and what and who is deciding who is right and who’s wrong.”
DuVernay said she thought the documentary “would sit on the back pages of Netflix and no one would see it. When it first debuted and it shot to number one in multiple countries,...

Ava DuVernay has slammed Donald Trump’s re-election as U.S. president, in spite of a criminal charges against him, saying that black people arrested on smaller crimes land years of jail time.

The subject of Trump’s re-election arose in a discussion on DuVernay’s Netflix-backed 2016 documentary 13th, exploring racial injustice in the U.S. penal system, and the fact its prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans.

Halloween might get all the credit for starting the slasher wave in 1978, but it really began a few years earlier thanks to Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974. The tale of Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) and his family of cannibals was something audiences had never seen before. It might have found its roots in the real-life story of Ed Gein, but it became its own wild nightmare. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre influenced what was to come, from Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes, to Halloween and Friday the 13th. All of those films were a success and audiences wanted more of them; make a movie about a madman in a mask chasing people, and you had an easy hit.

With award-winning hits like 13th and My Octopus Teacher, Netflix has more than proven itself when it comes to producing effective, informative, and captivating documentaries. Recently released by the streaming service, The Lost Children is yet another impressive film that joined their collection of real stories about real people. Following a tragic plane crash in the Colombian rainforest, the movie gives a detailed account of the search and rescue efforts to find four child-passengers who survived and disappeared into the jungle before it was too late.
Collaborative directors Orlando von Einsiedel, Jorge Duran, and Lali Houghton reflect the documentary's focus on Colombian military members and local indigenous people working together to save the kids despite the social and political conflict between them. However, by highlighting the search instead of the children's point of view, the film omits essential details of their 40-day survival that leaves audiences with an incomplete story and unsatisfying ending.

Friday the 13th has solidified itself as a horror classic, spawning an impressive number of sequels and making Camp Crystal Lake the most feared getaway in America. Comprising 12 films, the franchise and its iconic killer Jason Voorhees has progressively become more extreme, with some of its entries serving as straight-up sci-fi/fantasy. Despite this expansion, the simplicity of the original movies gives the franchise its fearsome reputation, as they depict a horror that's somewhat feasible in real life.
Due to the grounded nature of these murders, it raises the question of whether the original Friday the 13th is based on a true story. The upcoming Peacock streaming series Crystal Lake billed as a prequel and set-up to the first movie in 1980 has kindled interest in the possible origins of the story. In the 1970s and early '80s, horror created several new icons thanks to the slasher craze. Leatherface, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees led the way, but they all had that commonality of being silent hulks in a mask. In 1984, Wes Craven created something at once familiar and yet entirely original with A Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) didn't wear a mask, and he never shut up. While those aforementioned killers lived in a reality-based world (no matter how crazy some of the Halloween and Friday the 13th sequels got), Freddy was a supernatural killer who wasn't relegated to taking out his victims in normal ways. Sure, he had knives for fingers, but it was in dreams that he struck.

For most of its existence, Hollywood has viewed box office success as a sign to keep franchises coming back for sequels, ranging from Star Wars' decades-long saga to the endless lifespan of slashers. While not every successful film needs a continuation, others are practically designed to become long-running stories. At the same time, sometimes a studio just doesn't know when to quit.
Hollywood sequels can allow audiences to get their fill of some of their favorite heroes, villains and monsters, from killer sharks to explorers going out for their latest adventure. Some franchises make a point of trying to outdo each last movie, introducing increasingly unrealistic plot devices and raising the suspension of disbelief needed from viewers. While some fans love this approach, others hate it as it can twist a great premise into something unrecognizable -- even if the new direction makes for a fun viewing experience.

Way back in March of 1927, famed writer Hp Lovecraft wrote the science-fiction/horror short story The Colour Out of Space. In the story, a meteorite crashes in the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts. Fifty years later, the people who lived there suffered greatly. Their crops grow bountiful but rotten on the inside, their animals become mutated, and eventually, they themselves are driven to insanity and death. Not only was this Lovecraft’s favorite personal short story but would become one of his most well-regarded works. Sixty years later, in 1987, a film based on Lovecraft’s short story went into production under the title The Farm. What would follow was the financial failure of a movie with stories behind the scenes more grotesque than its monsters. Yet, it still somehow spawned three even more unheard-of and totally unconnected sequels. This is the story of What the F*ck Happened to The Curse?...

Superstitions and beliefs whether true or not run down for generations and turn into scariest phenomena. One such is about Friday the 13th which started centuries and decades ago and has now created a frenzy among people. The day is often combined with bad luck and misfortunes: rotten number 13 with Friday,
This superstition became more popular after a movie about the same was created. It was in 1980, just before summer, that a film by Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham was released that would change the history of horror forever.
Considered a classic in horror and slasher genres, Friday the 13th’s popularity has led to the making of many more films in this series, and has turned Camp Crystal Lake into the most dangerous site in the United States.
But years after the release of the film, have you wondered whether or not the film is based on a true story?...

Another Friday the 13th is upon us – unfortunately, we’re just talking about the date, not the release of a new Friday the 13th movie. But while the future of Friday the 13th currently depends on what happens with the Crystal Lake TV series, we can still go back and revisit the awesome F13 movies we have received over the years… and now we have decided to go through our Friday the 13th films collection and pick the top 5 Best Endings in the Friday the 13th Franchise!

“Yes, we know murder is bad.”
On October 13th, 2023, The Lady Killers Podcast released its first episode to an unsuspecting public, sparking conversation about female characters we love to hate. Co-hosts Jenn Adams, Sammie Kuykendall, Rocco Thompson, and Mae Shults gathered around microphones to discuss one of our favorite female killers, Pamela Voorhees, the murderous mother who kicks off one of horror’s most beloved franchises . Our goal was to explore the cinematic landscape of lady killers and the horrific world of feminine rage. Why do we find female villains so taboo? How do they thrive in a world dominated by men? What makes us love these glamorous bad girls and why would we die for them even though, yes, we know murder is bad?

Rachel McAdams played Christine Palmer in director Scott Derrickson’s contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the 2016 film Doctor Strange – but there was a time when we were told that Christine would not be appearing the follow-up, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She did end up in that movie, though, and by working on that film, McAdams had the chance to work with director Sam Raimi. Now Deadline reports that Raimi and McAdams are aiming to re-team on the 20th Century Studios horror thriller Send Help, which Raimi will be producing and directing. McAdams is currently in talks to star in the film, but Deadline cautions that these negotiations are in early stages, and nothing is definite at this point.
Back in 2007, it was rumored that Sam Raimi would be producing a fantasy film with a screenplay written by Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th 2009 writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

Nickel Boys, RaMell Ross’ narrative feature debut, is the story of a stubborn world, resisting change. Adapted from Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys, it’s an experimental rendition shooting mainly through Pov. We meet our protagonist not by looking at him, but by observing the world as he sees it. Elwood (Ethan Herisse) is the kind of Black young man society has always told him to be: patient, polite, non-threatening, and respectful of elders. When he sees a little girl pop up under his seat on the bus, he chats with her pleasantly. He’s good to his grandmother Hattie (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) and feels encouraged by his teacher (Jimmie Fails). Quiet and observant, Elwood looks at the world and sees promise for a better future. It’s the 1960s in Jim Crow-era Florida; his subjugation is the status quo, but Elwood believes times are changing. He believes in Dr.

Many things went wrong in the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th. The obvious departure in tone and focus from the original film turned many die-hard fans away. However, for horror fans looking for some light entertainment without getting too deep, Friday the 13th is perfect. In the remake, two groups of campers go to Crystal Lake and its surrounding area, and it soon turns into a feast for blood with a surprisingly low survival rate. It's action-packed and thrilling, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

He plays Clay Miller, a young man who becomes involved in the mystery of Crystal Lake following his sister's disappearance. Quick Links Everything Coming To Paramount+ In October The Best Movies And Shows Coming To Paramount+ This Month
Paramount+ has plenty of new TV shows and movies coming in October 2024, including a lot of horror content for the month of Halloween. Paramount+ launched in March 2021 as a rebranding of the CBS All Access streaming platform, with the goal of expanding its offerings and reach. Thanks to the re-merger between CBS and Viacom in 2019, Paramount+ also has access to Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV libraries. That usually means that library content is more exciting for subscribers than new content because they can binge existing series.
Unlike some of its competitors, Paramount+ has not put an emphasis on original movie programming except in the case of childrens films. However, the streaming service does have a popular lineup of exclusive original series, including the multiple-timeline and decade-spanning Yellowstone franchise. In September 2024, some of...

It’s Friday the 13th, that special time of the year when flights are cheaper (thanks to our collective stupidity) and everybody celebrates the murderous exploits of Jason Voorhees. The iconic slasher first showed up, albeit very briefly, in 1980’s Friday the 13th, before later taking Manhattan, and eventually journeying to outer space, where he went on a Holodeck killing spree.
In addition to the roughly 5,000 Friday the 13th movies, Jason has also occasionally popped up here in the real world — not to disembowel horny camp counselors, but to sell stuff, like the time he visited his local RadioShack.
But no doubt the most famous of Jason’s promotional appearances was the time he guested on The Arsenio Hall Show. Yes, back on July 28, 1989, the late-night host welcomed Bo Derek, Ursula Andress and an axe-wielding undead monster.
Remaining in character for the entire interview, Jason didn’t say a word.

Another Friday the 13th is upon us, which means it’s time to watch and celebrate the Friday the 13th franchise. Here on Arrow in the Head, we’ve previously talked about the best kills in the Friday the 13th films, and there are some all-time greats in this series. With weapons as varied as bladed implements, liquid nitrogen, and his own bare hands, the legendary Jason Voorhees has made blood spray, eyes pop, and bones shatter, tossed around that dream stalker from Elm Street, and even punched someone’s head clean off their body… But with this article, we wanted to do something different. Going in the opposite direction from the kill celebration, we’ve now compiled a list of what we consider to be the Worst Kills in the Franchise. Check out our picks, then let us know which kills you consider to be the worst by leaving a comment below!

Presented by Paramount Scares, Friday the 13th Week sees Bloody Disgusting heading to Camp Crystal Lake for a series of features that celebrate the Voorhees family and their influence. On Monday, the Halloweenies listed their 13 favorite kills in the franchise, and today, Rachel Reeves looks at other camp-adjacent scares.
When Friday the 13th was released in May 1980, its remarkable financial success poured gasoline on the flickering slasher-genre flames. Already burning solid thanks to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Halloween, these films became touch points for many filmmakers looking to break into the industry or simply stack a few coins. Everything from masks and machetes to final girls and fake-outs quickly became solidified as standard genre tropes. However, it was Friday the 13th that reframed summer camps as prime locations for slasher mayhem and popularized it with others looking to replicate the results.

It’s impossible to imagine the Friday the 13th franchise without the music of composer Harry Manfredini, whose contributions to the Voorhees saga are as essential as the characters, the gore, and the hockey mask. Manfredini has scored countless horror films in addition to the movies in the Friday franchise, and his next horror movie has been announced this week.
The dark side of wish fulfillment is explored in the upcoming feature-length horror film Wish, which asks the question: How far would you go to have your dreams come true?
The production team has announced the inclusion of legendary composer Harry Manfredini to create the soundtrack for Wish. Read on for more information and find a sneak peek below.
Set in modern-day Florida, Wish follows the story of a struggling female writer who, in her pursuit of success, uncovers a terrifying secret – her friends are making deadly wishes to an evil Djinn.

The Universal Monsters franchise is one of the most iconic horror movie brands of all time, with the films and their title characters being well-known for decades. Many of these movies had literary origins, with Dracula, Frankenstein and The Invisible Man all based on books. Some members of the group were made for the big screen, and perhaps the most underrated one is now being remade in the same capacity.
Creature from the Black Lagoon is a beautiful and breathtaking movie that's sadly never really gotten its due among its literature-based brethren. It's also lacked in remakes, making the titular "Gill-man" iconic, but not quite as recognizable as other monsters.
