Few people nowadays probably can’t say that they have a favorite film company because of how much the industry has changed. The film genre has become oversaturated with superhero films, leading most people to start a conversation by asking, “Marvel or DC?” We don’t talk about what other companies are putting out or even acknowledge the future films that are coming out. Also, the way Walt Disney Studios has bought other companies makes it challenging for the common audience to step out and watch anything else. However, one company has been talked about a lot recently due to the films they’re distributing or making, and it's the A24 company. With What If…? still in the middle of streaming on Disney+, it’s never too early to start thinking about MCU Christmas, and the first Hawkeye trailer has arrived to let us get a feel of that expensive present way ahead of time, even as Marvel continues to add the bows (sorry) and trimmings to Clint Barton’s upcoming TV series behind the scenes.
Starring Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Barton/Hawkeye and introducing Hailee Steinfeld to the MCU as his eager archery prodigy Kate Bishop, Hawkeye also boasts a supporting cast that features Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James, and Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez (aka Echo). There’s no sign of Florence Pugh’s Black Widow character Yelena Bolova in the trailer, but you can expect to see her pop up, too. The series has been directed by Rhys Thomas and duo...

Amazon has released a new trailer for 7500-2/">7500. The thriller is set to debut on Prime Video later this month and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The actor has been a bit quiet as of late, but based on this trailer it looks like the majority of this movie rests squarely on his shoulders. And he has a lot to contend with as this will put the fate of an entire plane in his hands in what looks to be a tense and deadly situation.
The Amazon Prime trailer kicks off with a couple of pilots who are kicking off what seems to be a routine flight. Things devolve quickly as there is an attempted hijacking, leaving Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character alone in the cockpit to try and sort out the tense situation. To say the very least of it, he is put in an unenviable situation and has to make hard decisions,...

While A24 is known for its Oscar-winning indie movie pedigree, the company has been quietly getting into the television space. Following the Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt series “Comrade Detective,” A24’s second independently-financed TV show is the astronaut comedy “Moonbase 8.” The studio has now debuted our first look at the series, which went into production earlier this year.
“Moonbase 8” is the latest series from “Portlandia” co-creators Jonathan Krisel and Fred Armisen. Krisel is directing the episodes while Armisen stars opposite fellow comedians Tim Heidecker and John C. Reilly. The plot centers around three subpar astronauts at Nasa’s Moon Base Simulator who desperately aspire to be chosen for the next mission to the moon.
“‘Moonbase 8’ is pure comic genius and we are thrilled to be a part of this show from the ground up,” A24 said in an official statement when first announcing the series in April.

Netflix might not have been welcome at the Cannes Film Festival this year, but it and other streaming platforms will take center stage further along the Mediterranean coast at this month’s Monte Carlo Television Festival.
Known for its glamorous location, red carpets and press junkets, the festival opens June 15 with the world premiere of Amazon Prime Original series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” from Paramount Television and Skydance Television.
The presence of the streaming services can be felt throughout the program of the festival, which sees itself as a key European launch pad for U.S. and international dramas.
The president of the fiction jury is Netflix board director (and former Disney exec) Anne Sweeney. Nominated shows include Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Comrade Detective,” and Netflix co-production “The End of the F***ing World.”

Music for television is now as diverse as it has ever been — from traditional orchestra to electronica, from cool jazz to hip-hop beats. That’s partly the result of the vast increase in production in recent years, but also a matter of showrunners’ wide-ranging musical tastes.
The diversity extends to the composers themselves. Women and people of color, for example, are far more visible in TV’s musical community than in the feature-film world. There are multiple worthy Emmy contenders in the two main composition categories: music for a series and music for a limited series, movie or special. Here we’ve singled out a few of them.
Kurt Farquhar, composer for the CW’s superhero show “Black Lightning,” calls his work “neo-urban scoring: a mix of orchestral score, sound design, contemporary urban/club music, R&B and jazz.” Farquhar has added even more diverse sounds during its first season,...

Everyone likes a little jiggle with their wiggle, so why wouldn’t James Corden make an excellent addition to the “Magic Mike” crew? Channing Tatum isn’t so sure, but he still gave the host of “The Late Late Show” a chance to strut his stuff. In a hilarious new sketch, Corden stopped by an open call led by Tatum and his crew of Adonis-like dancers. The adorable bear had a spring in his step and a song in his heart as he attempted to chest bump, grind the floor, and strip down to his skivvies all in the name of joining the coolest dance crew in town. The results are just as hilarious as you might expect.

You might remember that around this time last year, “Parks & Recreation” star Nick Offerman brought to life Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” in a unique audiobook narration performance through Amazon’s Audible. Now, once more, you can listen to his lulling voice narrating another Twain classic in Audible’s new audiobook: “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”.
The 1889 novel follows Hank Morgan, a mechanic living in 19th-century New England, who (after hitting his head) travels back in time 1300 years to Camelot during the years of King Arthur. Being a mechanic living in a progress-driven atmosphere, Hank feels compelled to teach the citizens of Camelot the modern way of life. As he sets out on his endeavor, he encounters several obstacles like an arrogant, devious wizard. Elmore Leonard doesn’t make adaptations easy. The many successful films and one great TV show produced from the renowned author’s work seem to indicate otherwise, but for every “Out of Sight” and “Justified,” there’s a “Killshot” and “Karen Sisco.”
Now, after a hailed novel and two feature films, “Get Shorty” becomes the latest Leonard crime story to get the series treatment, and it’s a lot closer in quality to its titular inspiration than its lesser sequel, “Be Cool.” But aside from being pretty darn good, this take goes its own way.
Anyone familiar with the 1990 book or 1995 film will certainly recognize the plot, but creator Davey Holmes’ new show isn’t doing an impression; not on any level. From the casting to the construction, this version of “Get Shorty” is its own beast. The hour-long drama may not be the next big breakout in the golden age of TV,...

A funny, fresh detective comedy is tough to do in any language. Many shows have tried to infuse the sordid world of cheap private investigators with some offbeat humor, but “Swedish Dicks,” the latest attempt, co-created and starring Peter Stormare, bases its story in L.A. with an international and bilingual twist.
Stormare plays Ingmar, a broke ex-Hollywood stuntman who opens up an unusually affordable detective agency. Working out of a nondescript downtown L.A. office, one particular job brings fellow Swedish ex-pat Axel (Johan Glans) into his professional orbit. After the two narrowly escape the clutches of a particularly twisty gig, they go into business together. Operating under an agency with the same name as the show’s title, these two Swedes handle their client’s unconventional requests wherever in the city they might lead.

Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt like to make “odd things” together.
“We’ve done lots of odd things just by following various creative whims for our own amusement. [They’re] not for audiences though; just in our spare time, for fun,” Gordon-Levitt said in an interview with IndieWire.
Tatum, sitting next to him, chuckled and nodded his head.
“I have a secret over Joe that he has to forever do the dumb things that I ask him to come and do,” Tatum said.
Fans can see one of Tatum and Gordon-Levitt’s odd, creative projects right now — “Comrade Detective,” executive produced by Tatum and featuring his voice work, alongside Gordon-Levitt, hit Amazon on Friday, August 4 — but it’s certainly not dumb.
Their latest collaboration is so clever, in fact, you need to unpack its backstory to unlock all the peculiar charms.

“Mr. Mercedes” opens with a scene as telling to the series’ successes as its failures. Inspired by an actual tragedy — when a woman drove her car into a crowd of people at a McDonalds’ job fair — the new Audience Network drama recreates the crime in gruesome detail.
Though not outside the fast food chain and with more mysterious intent than the aforementioned event, a man in a clown mask sits behind the wheel of a Mercedes sedan. He pulls up to a line of people, who are waiting to meet potential employers during the fiscally-tumultuous times of 2009. Sitting idle long enough to draw attention from the sleepy crowd, including a mother with her baby and a kind man with a tightly-wrapped sleeping bag, the driver suddenly shifts into gear and speeds through the screaming bystanders.
As described, this is a deeply disturbing event. As captured, it’s nauseating. In the era of “too much TV,...

The Bingeworthy Breakdown is an occasional look at new and returning TV shows. An estimated 500 seasons of scripted TV will air in 2017, and we’re here to help you sort the must-sees from the can-skips, because life is way too short, and Peak TV way too crowded, for investing in a show you’re not going to love. This week, we’re going to dive in to Season 1 of Amazon‘s “Comrade Detective,” created by Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka, with director Rhys Thomas, starring and executive produced by Channing Tatum, so you can decide if you’re going to give yourself over to as it’s available now on Amazon Prime.

Introduced as a film preservationist’s recent discovery and told with the utmost accuracy to its specified time period, “Comrade Detective” is, by all discernible indication, a Romanian television series from the ’80s that’s been restored and dubbed for American audiences. Executive producer Channing Tatum and host John Ronson say so in welcoming viewers to the series:
“Similar to American propaganda films like ‘Red Dawn’ and ‘Rocky IV,’ that demonized the Eastern block, ‘Comrade Detective’ was produced and funded by the Romanian government not merely to entertain, but to celebrate and promote communist ideals,” Ronson says.
“After a two-decade journey spanning four continents, hundreds of dead-end leads, and the cooperation of five international governments, we have finally tracked down and restored the international master copies — and dubbed them.”

As audiences begin the final push towards fall, there are still new shows worth your time. We’ve gathered some of this month’s biggest TV premieres from across network, cable and streaming to add to your personal viewing calendar.
“What Would Diplo Do?” (August 3, Viceland)
James Van Der Beek takes the role of a lifetime as Diplo, the world-famous DJ (who may or may not have spoiled West Coast viewers on the “Breaking Bad” Season 4 finale back in 2011). As Van Der Beek told IndieWire’s Liz Shannon Miller, it’s a series that fulfills a career-long dream, in a way. How well does he pull off the beanie look and channel an internationally recognized producer? We’re eager to find out.

In the year of our Lord 2017, The War of the Chrises ended. A long-gestating and confounding battle between movie stars with similar names, similar roles, and similar skin tones, came to a close. Chris Evans (the Captain in “Captain America”), Chris Hemsworth (the Thor in “Thor”), Chris Pratt (a guardian in “Guardians of the Galaxy”), and Chris Pine (the dude in “Wonder Woman”) laid down their super weapons and bowed down to the king.
You need not ask who won. You already know.
Let King Pine’s reign never end.
Now, before we get too much further into this review of “Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later,” it should be noted that King Pine isn’t a prominent figure in David Wain and Michael Showalter’s eight, cheery new episodes. In the vein of 1980s Cold War-era detective TV series, Comrade Detective is a gritty, action-packed and blood-soaked story that finds Romanian Detectives Gregor Anghel (played by Florin Piersic Jr. and dubbed by Channing Tatum, who is also an executive producer) and Iosef Baciu (played by Corneliu Ulici and dubbed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) investigating the murder of a fellow officer, which leads to the unraveling of a subversive plot to destroy their country. One of the highest compliments you can pay to a TV show is this: It knows exactly what kind of show it is. And that’s very much the case for “What Would Diplo Do?” the new Viceland scripted comedy showrun by and starring James Van Der Beek.
What is a Diplo? You don’t necessarily need to know the answer to enjoy the series, directed by Brandon Dermer and starring Van Der Beek as a world-famous DJ who travels the world with an eclectic crew of characters performing sick concerts and getting into hijinks. But the answer is that Diplo (born Thomas Wesley Pentz) is a real Edm artist who (theoretically) is nothing at all like Van Der Beek’s portrayal. And that fact is part of what makes the series work so well, as Van Der Beek pushes his character portrait beyond simple caricature into the most out-there realms.

When it came time to cast the eponymous role in his rap dramedy “Patti Cake$,” filmmaker Geremy Jasper didn’t worry too much about finding a breakout star who could act and rap, instead he opted for a fresh new name who could pour her entire heart into the part and learn the ropes along the way.
Enter Danielle MacDonald. The Aussie actress already had plenty of credits under her belt, but “Patti Cake$” offered her the chance to take a rich starring role and make it her own. Over the course of nearly three years, Jasper and Macdonald worked to refine her skills on the mic, her appreciation for the craft, and get her primed to play a rapper on the rise in the indie hit.
