Exclusive: Veteran producer Andrew Schneider has been tapped to lead Candle Entertainment, a division of Candle Studios, as EVP.

Schneider joins from Perfect Storm Entertainment, the production company of the Fast & Furious franchise’s Justin Lin, where he served as President. In his new role, Schneider will drive the expansion of the scripted film and TV business under Candle Entertainment, with a specific focus on the action, drama and thriller genres, and further tapping into a growing global co-production market. Companies operating under the division’s umbrella include Faraway Road Productions and the Latin-focused Exile Content Studio.

Based in Los Angeles, Schneider will report to Candle Studios CEO Sarah Harden. Exile Executive Chairman Isaac Lee and Faraway Co-CEOs Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff will report to Schneider.

Showtime has ordered am anthology series with the first season set to tackle the rise of ride-sharing app Uber. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will star.

The series, “Super Pumped,” was first announced as being in development in 2019, though it was not planned as anthology at the time. Each season will now explore a story that rocked the business world to its core and changed culture.

Season 1 is based on Mike Isaac’s book “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.” Gordon-Levitt will star as Travis Kalanick, Uber’s first CEO and co-founder, who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup. The series will depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley.

Bert and Bertie, the nom de plume for Amber Finlayson (Bert) and Katie Ellwood (Bertie) and known for helming Amazon’s coming-of-age comedy, Troop Zero, have been tapped to captain a block of episodes of the Marvel Studios series that will air on Disney+.

Also pulling the string for a block will be Rhys Thomas, a Saturday Night Live helmer who has also directed Staten Island Summer, Amazon’s action comedy series Comrade Detective, and John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch.

Apple has landed their second project with Julianne Moore, Sharper, in which the Still Alice Oscar winner will play a con artist in Manhattan’s billionaire echelon. Apple will partner with A24 on the feature, which will serve as the studio, as well as Picturestart which is attached as the production company.

Apple scored Sharper, written by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, in a competitive situation. Moore will produce Sharper with Bart Freundlich, Gatewood, Tanaka and Erik Feig of Picturestart.

Amazon has released a new trailer for 7500-2/">7500. The thriller is set to debut on Prime Video later this month and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the latest big name star to set up a project at Apple.

Variety has learned from sources that Gordon-Levitt is set to star in, write, and executive produce a drama series currently in the works at the nascent streamer titled “Mr. Corman.” It is said to follow an elementary school teacher grappling with adulthood in Los Angeles. Gordon-Levitt would produce under his HitRECord banner with A24 also producing.

Apple declined to comment.

While A24 is known for its Oscar-winning indie movie pedigree, the company has been quietly getting into the television space. Following the Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt series “Comrade Detective,” A24’s second independently-financed TV show is the astronaut comedy “Moonbase 8.” The studio has now debuted our first look at the series, which went into production earlier this year.

“Moonbase 8” is the latest series from “Portlandia” co-creators Jonathan Krisel and Fred Armisen. Krisel is directing the episodes while Armisen stars opposite fellow comedians Tim Heidecker and John C. Reilly. The plot centers around three subpar astronauts at Nasa’s Moon Base Simulator who desperately aspire to be chosen for the next mission to the moon.

“‘Moonbase 8’ is pure comic genius and we are thrilled to be a part of this show from the ground up,” A24 said in an official statement when first announcing the series in April.

Netflix might not have been welcome at the Cannes Film Festival this year, but it and other streaming platforms will take center stage further along the Mediterranean coast at this month’s Monte Carlo Television Festival.

Known for its glamorous location, red carpets and press junkets, the festival opens June 15 with the world premiere of Amazon Prime Original series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” from Paramount Television and Skydance Television.

The presence of the streaming services can be felt throughout the program of the festival, which sees itself as a key European launch pad for U.S. and international dramas.

The president of the fiction jury is Netflix board director (and former Disney exec) Anne Sweeney. Nominated shows include Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Comrade Detective,” and Netflix co-production “The End of the F***ing World.”

New Line Cinema has acquired LeBron James and Channing Tatum’s pitch titled “Public Enemy,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

James and Tatum’s production companies, SpringHill Entertainment and Free Association, will serve as producers on the film that will be written by Lucas Carter. The action-comedy will look at media in our current landscape.

James and his SpringHill partner Maverick Carter will produce, while Spencer Beighley and Jamal Henderson will oversee the project for the company. Andrew Schneider and Michael Parets will oversee for Free Association.

Written by Lucas Carter, the film is being described as subversive action comedy that looks at the speed of media in our current landscape. SpringHill’s James and Carter will produce, with Spencer Beighley and Jamal Henderson set to oversee for the company. Michael Parets and Andrew Schneider will oversee for Free Association.

SpringHill is already working with New Line on a remake of the 1990 cult comedy House Party. The company is repped by Wme and Ziffren Brittenham.

Free Association has been behind the 22 Jump Street and Magic Mike franchises and more recently produced the Amazon series Comrade Detective and Logan Lucky. It is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Hansen, Jacobson.

Stx Entertainment has teamed up with Tencent Pictures and Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan’s Free Association production company to co-produce a live-action film adaptation of “Zombie Brother” digital comic book.

The project is based on the top title on Tencent’s digital comics and animation platform. Since 2011, the digital comic book has garnered more than 17 billion views on over 348 episodes, and its animated series has attracted more than 3.7 billion views across its first two seasons. The franchise has also been adapted into a mobile game and stage play. Free Association joined Tencent on the project in March 2017.

Tencent Pictures is part of Chinese investment giant Tencent Holdings. It has been an investor in Robert Simonds’ Stx, along with Tpg Growth, Hony Capital; Pccw; Liberty Global; and individual investors including Gigi Pritzker, Beau Wrigley, and Dominic Ng.

Elmore Leonard doesn’t make adaptations easy. The many successful films and one great TV show produced from the renowned author’s work seem to indicate otherwise, but for every “Out of Sight” and “Justified,” there’s a “Killshot” and “Karen Sisco.”

A funny, fresh detective comedy is tough to do in any language. Many shows have tried to infuse the sordid world of cheap private investigators with some offbeat humor, but “Swedish Dicks,” the latest attempt, co-created and starring Peter Stormare, bases its story in L.A. with an international and bilingual twist.

Stormare plays Ingmar, a broke ex-Hollywood stuntman who opens up an unusually affordable detective agency. Working out of a nondescript downtown L.A. office, one particular job brings fellow Swedish ex-pat Axel (Johan Glans) into his professional orbit. After the two narrowly escape the clutches of a particularly twisty gig, they go into business together. Operating under an agency with the same name as the show’s title, these two Swedes handle their client’s unconventional requests wherever in the city they might lead.

“We’ve done lots of odd things just by following various creative whims for our own amusement. [They’re] not for audiences though; just in our spare time, for fun,” Gordon-Levitt said in an interview with IndieWire.

With Comrade Detective, executive producers Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood have resurrected classic Cold War-era Soviet TV in the first-of-its-kind (and timely) spoof, which had its premiere at the ArcLight Hollywood on Thursday night.

One of the highest compliments you can pay to a TV show is this: It knows exactly what kind of show it is. And that’s very much the case for “What Would Diplo Do?” the new Viceland scripted comedy showrun by and starring James Van Der Beek.

What is a Diplo? You don’t necessarily need to know the answer to enjoy the series, directed by Brandon Dermer and starring Van Der Beek as a world-famous DJ who travels the world with an eclectic crew of characters performing sick concerts and getting into hijinks. But the answer is that Diplo (born Thomas Wesley Pentz) is a real Edm artist who (theoretically) is nothing at all like Van Der Beek’s portrayal. And that fact is part of what makes the series work so well, as Van Der Beek pushes his character portrait beyond simple caricature into the most out-there realms.

Channing Tatum’s weirdo Romanian cop parody Comrade Detective is coming to Amazon Prime on August 4—and you can see a new trailer for it right here—but it’s not the only new content that subscribers will be able to stream while enjoying their free shipping and exclusive sales. They’ll also be getting the reboot of cult superhero hit The Tick, kid shows Lost In Oz and Tumble Leaf, and a whole bunch of movies including Superbad, Florence Foster Jenkins, and five of the Saw movies. (If you want to see Saw VI or Saw VII, they’re already available on Prime.)

Amazon Prime and A24 have released the first trailer for “Comrade Detective,” in which Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt provide voiceovers for two Romanian police officers in the buddy cop comedy. At the beginning of the trailer, Tatum receives a mysterious package, which prompts him to tell his assistant: “Bring some vodka with the Vcr when you bring it back!” He pops the video into the newly-acquired Vcr and a 1983 Romanian cop show, titled “Comrade Detective,” starts up on the screen.
