“Mickey 17,” Bong Joon Ho’s wacky sci-fi satire, is shaping up to be a major money loser for Warner Bros. following its rocky box office reception.
The film, which stars Robert Pattinson as a clone who works menial jobs in a futuristic dystopia, will likely lose between $75 million to $80 million during its theatrical run, according to three sources with knowledge of the economics of movies on this scale. A source close to the film disputes those estimates, saying the true losses are “significantly less.”
After two weeks of release, “Mickey 17” has earned $35.7 million domestically and $92.2 million worldwide. The film was projected to end its theatrical run with $175 million to $180 million worldwide — including $52 million domestically and $123 million internationally. But those estimates were recently revised down to $143 million worldwide — including $46 domestically and $97 million internationally. “Mickey 17’s” breakeven point is roughly $300 million. Update March 17, 2025: Paramount's Novocaine topped the box office in its first weekend of release, earning $8.7 million from March 14 to March 16. The action-packed comedy starring Jack Quaid came in slightly under its $10 million forecast to lead a numb weekend box office. Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 held on for second place, adding $7.5 million to the film's total domestic gross of $33 million. Rounding out the top five were Focus Features' Black Bag with $7.5 million, Disney/Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World with $5.5 million, and Ketchup Entertainment's The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which exceeded expectations with $3.2 million.

If Hollywood is looking to 2025 to reset the movie theater business after a tough five year stretch, it’s not off to the strongest of starts. Original films like “Novocaine,” “Black Bag” and “Mickey 17” are failing to draw sizable crowds, while sequels in once-reliable franchises such as “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Paddington in Peru” are falling drastically short of their predecessors.
Attendance is expected to pick up in spring and into the summer, as “A Minecraft Movie,” “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Lilo & Stitch” and other blockbuster hopefuls land in theaters. Until then, however, box office revenues are looking dire.
Over the weekend, Paramount’s “Novocaine,” an action comedy starring Jack Quaid as an unlikely hero who can’t feel pain, crumbled in its international box office debut with $1.8 million from 19 markets, though that represents just 25% of its overseas footprint. The film opened to No.

Come to think of it, it’s been nearly half a year since Paddington in Peru first debuted in the United Kingdom in November 2024. The movie made a killing at the U.K. box office before it was launched domestically and in other international territories this year. Since then, Paddington 3 has emerged as a major box office hit, in addition to having pushed the acclaimed franchise towards a massive global box office haul. That being said, it remains the lowest-grossing installment of the trilogy, as it makes one last push towards the $200 million mark at the global box office — this is a milestone that both its predecessors were able to surpass with relative ease.

Novocaine Takes The Lead With A Dismal No. 1 Gross
This article was originally written Saturday Am and has been updated Sunday Am with up-to-date box office projections (in bold), a full chart, and further analysis.
Novocaine has pulled ahead of Black Bag, and Mickey 17 after going head to head in a dismal weekend for the 2025 box office. Novocaine, which is an action comedy starring Jack Quaid, and Black Bag, which is a Steven Soderberg-directed spy thriller starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, are both new wide releases. The Mickey 17 release kicked off the week before. The Bong Joon Ho-directed Robert Pattinson sci-fi movie debuted at No. 1 with a record-breaking $19 million haul that was the Parasite director's best in domestic history but still came nowhere close to its $118 million budget.

The new Robert Pattinson science fiction movie has surpassed a major box office milestone despite setbacks during its second weekend. Pattinson is a well-known actor who got his start in prominent franchises, including playing Cedric Diggory in 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, which spanned five movies that were released between 2008 and 2012. However, as he grew older, he began to take on more idiosyncratic roles.
While he has since returned to franchise filmmaking in a major way by leading the cast of The Batman in the title role, he has become better known for working with auteur directors such as the Safdie Brothers, who he partnered with in their 2017 movie Good Time, and Robert Eggers, who he worked with in the 2019 horror feature The Lighthouse. Other titles that saw him work with notable directors include Claire Denis' High Life, Christopher Nolan's Tenet,...

The South Korean box office saw “Mickey 17” retain its dominance for a second consecutive weekend, grossing KRW5.6 billion ($3.8 million) and capturing 65.79% of the market share. The sci-fi epic, directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Robert Pattinson, continues to build on its impressive opening, bringing its cumulative total to $14.3 million with 2.1 million admissions.
According to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the weekend of March 7-9, saw the top 10 films earn a combined $5.8 million, reflecting a significant drop from last weekend’s $9 million.
“Mickey 17,” which follows a ‘reprinted’ worker on a space colony tasked with dangerous jobs, attracted 562,206 admissions over the weekend across 1,895 screens. The film’s ongoing success in Korea has been bolstered by Imax screenings.

While Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy was denied a theatrical release in North America, Paddington in Peru didn’t face similar difficulties. The movie was released domestically a few months after its debut in the United Kingdom — both Paddington and Bridget Jones are considered cultural icons there — but has delivered a strong performance nonetheless. It is now aiming for the $200 million mark worldwide, a benchmark that both of its predecessors were able to surpass as well. However, Paddington 3 is still the lowest-grossing installment of the trilogy, which debuted a little over a decade ago.

Warner Bros.’ “Mickey 17” doesn’t look like it will blast off at the box office, earning an opening weekend of $19.1 million from 3,807 locations as it faces a long road to recouping its nine-digit production budget.
Greenlit in January 2022 under previous Warner film chairman Toby Emmerich, “Mickey 17” is acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up to his Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite” and carries a reported production budget of $118 million.
Reception for the film has been generally positive with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 79% critics and 73% audience to go with a B on CinemaScore. But it remains to be seen whether that good-but-not-great word of mouth will be enough to give “Mickey 17” the legs to be theatrically profitable, especially with Paramount’s “Novocaine” being released next week with a relatively more accessible form of the gory action thrills that “Mickey 17” offers along with Bong’s brand of biting satire.

“Mickey 17,” a dystopian sci-fi comedy starring a dozen Robert Pattinsons, was No. 1 at the domestic box office with $19.1 million from 3,807 theaters. But the Warner Bros. film cost $118 million, a staggering price for an original, offbeat space odyssey — and the kind of swing for the fence that could require a few lifetimes to turn a theatrical profit.
Critics and audiences were mixed on the R-rated “Mickey 17,” whose “B” grade on CinemaScore and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes aren’t encouraging for the film’s staying power. It’s a concern because “Mickey 17,” which cost another $80 million to market, needs to earn around $275 million to $300 million globally to get into the black during its big screen run, according to rival executives with knowledge of similar productions.
Internationally, “Mickey 17” brought in $25.4 million from 66 territories. The film opened last weekend in South Korea and has grossed $34.2 million overseas and $53.3 million worldwide in total.

Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17,” the first of Warner Bros.’ eclectic, pricey 2025 slate of original films from name-brand directors like Ryan Coogler and Paul Thomas Anderson, isn’t getting the warmest arrival at the box office. The sci-fi comedy, starring Robert Pattinson as a pair of interstellar doppelgangers, earned $7.7 million across Friday and preview screenings from 3,807 locations.
That kick-off puts “Mickey 17” on pace to land within projections for an opening weekend north of $18 million. Whether or not it can fulfill that forecast though, it’s going to be a slow start for a film sporting a $118 million production budget. Add in marketing and distribution costs and the Warner Bros. release will likely struggle to enter profitability in theaters, which could take more than $275 million in global admissions.

The South Korean box office experienced a seismic shift this weekend as “Mickey 17” claimed the top spot with a commanding $6.6 million debut, capturing 69.06% of the market share.
The sci-fi film, directed by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson, not only outpaced all competitors but also set a new high for 2025, surpassing the opening of “Captain America: Brave New World.” According to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the weekend of Feb. 28-March 2 saw the top 10 films earn a total of $9 million, a significant boost from the previous weekend’s $4.4 million.
“Mickey 17,” which follows a ‘reprinted’ worker (Pattinson) on a distant planet colony tasked with dangerous jobs that no one else will do, attracted 980,549 admissions over the weekend across 2,153 screens. Warner Bros. reported a four-day opening total of KRW12.9 billion ($9 million), benefiting from a non-traditional Friday release and the Monday Independence Day Movement holiday.

Captain America: Brave New World successfully completed its three-peat at the box office by finishing No. 1 for the third weekend in a row. However, it was a hollow victory in the overall grand scheme of things because the theater business suffered yet another stunning financial blow as Captain America 4’s $15 million domestic take led the worst weekend of 2025 yet. In total, all this weekend’s titles only managed to bring in a year-low $52.4 million.
The previous record holder for the worst weekend financially of 2025 went to the three-day period from Friday, Feb. 7, through Sunday, Feb. 9, in which all its film titles only managed to bring in $53.9 million. Oscar weekend is a slow weekend for the box office, as Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” easily held on to the No. 1 spot with a third weekend total of $15 million.
That’s slightly better than the $12.8 million third weekend of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” back in 2023, a weekend in which “Creed III” was the No. 1 film and pulled premium format screens away from Marvel. With a running domestic total of $164 million, “Brave New World” is back on pace to pass $200 million domestic, though finishing in break-even territory is still the best-case scenario with a running global total of just $341.8 million
In second is the sole newcomer of the top 5: Focus Features’ “Last Breath,” a true story undersea thriller starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu that grossed $7.8 million from 3,010 locations. It is a remake of director Alex Parkinson’s 2019 documentary of the same name about the rescue...

“Captain America: Brave New World” kept its box office crown for the third weekend in a row, earning $15 million for a first place finish. Its muted victory comes as Hollywood prepares to celebrate itself at the Oscars on Sunday, bringing an end to one of the most tumultuous awards seasons in recent memory.
Despite topping the charts, the Marvel and Disney adventure has struggled to match the success of previous entries in the MCU. It will end the weekend having grossed $163.7 million domestically, a sizable figure for most movies, though a disappointment for this blue chip franchise. “Brave New World” has benefitted from a lack of competition, having primarily faced off against much lower budgeted indie releases. Globally, the superhero sequel, which cost $180 million to make and tens of millions more to market, has earned $341.8 million.

Sunday might be billed as Hollywood’s biggest night, but it certainly won’t be outside of the Oscars ceremony. As the town readies for the last evening of awards season, theaters are seeing another muted weekend. Focus Features’ underwater thriller “Last Breath” is projecting a measured opening at $7.3 million. Meanwhile, Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World” is expected to maintain No. 1 for the third weekend in a row, despite quickly losing momentum among moviegoers.
“Last Breath” dived into $3 million across Friday and preview screenings from 3,018 venues. The survival thriller, about a real rescue operation by deep sea divers, is projected to earn $7.3 million through its opening frame. Alex Parkinson directs a cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Finn Cole, adapting from his own 2019 documentary of the same name. Focus acquired distribution rights last summer.

The actor’s insistence on scripting his own scenes in Paddington 3 and Bridget Jones 4 are proof of his talents. So why on earth hasn’t he written his own film yet?
We can all agree that Paddington in Peru was, well, fine. Compared to the previous Paddington films it was a bit of a damp squib, but Olivia Colman got a few chances to be decently silly and it was leagues better than any of the recent live-action Disney remakes.
However, there was one moment where Paddington in Peru touched greatness. And this was the mid-credit sequence. For those who haven’t seen it, it’s a nod to the Paddington 2 scene in which a huge number of prisoners introduce themselves, only this time it’s a huge number of bears. And the person they’re introducing themselves to is Phoenix Buchanan, played by Hugh Grant.

With “Paddington in Peru” now on its second week of adventures in U.S. cinemas and having hit a global box office of $125 million, VFX powerhouse Framestore has lifted the lid on how it brought the entirely CG bear — and much of his surroundings — to life.
In a VFX breakdown video exclusively given to Variety, the company has unveiled the work that went into not just creating Paddington Bear, but the vast array of other animals that feature in film, the exotic Peruvian locations, including the Home for Retired Bears (mostly shot in a U.K. studio), and a scene in which Paddington takes control (badly) of a riverboat careering down a chopping jungle river. The video shows Ben Whishaw — who voices Paddington — in the studio, recording the lines and also embodying the bear emotionally so his face can be used as reference for VFX, others (including animation director Pablo Grillo...

The following contains spoilers for Paddington in Peru.
He might be locked up, but Paddington in Peru couldn't resist a surprise appearance from an old foe. Following the movie's release, director Dougal Wilson explained how its mid-credits scene came together, briefly reuniting Paddington Bear with Paddington 2 villain Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant) after his latest adventure concluded.
While Buchanan's incarceration made linking him to Paddington in Peru tricky, the screenwriters found a way through the film's ending where Paddington introduces the bears he met in Peru to London's sights, creating an opening to see him again in prison. "I thought it was a very Paddington reconciliatory thing to do to go. Meet his nemesis from the second film," Wilson told Entertainment Weekly. "Wouldn't it be fun if Paddington was the one visiting with his bear tribe, and they were visiting Phoenix because Paddington's forgiven Phoenix?"

The South Korean box office saw “Captain America: Brave New World” retain the top spot for a second consecutive weekend, though its earnings declined. Meanwhile, animated horror thriller “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” debuted in second place.
According to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, “Captain America: Brave New World” remained in first place with KRW3.1 billion ($2.2 million), accounting for 44% of the market share. The Marvel blockbuster, which follows Sam Wilson as he steps into the Captain America mantle, attracted 316,146 admissions over the weekend and has a cumulative total of $9.2 million.
Debuting in second place, “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” earned $739,664 over the weekend with 108,090 admissions. The film, directed by Kim Dong-chul, follows Father Park, a doctor-turned-priest excommunicated for performing exorcisms. He is called upon by a monk from a secretive temple to protect a powerful child from a corrupt master, forcing him to confront his inner demons.

“Captain America: Brave New World” is losing momentum at the box office, even during a muted winter weekend with hardly any competition.
After a strong $100 million start over the extended Presidents Day holiday frame, Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” crumbed by 68% in its second weekend with $28.3 million from 4,105 North American theaters. The Anthony Mackie-led superhero adventure, which remained in first place on box office charts, has generated $141 million domestically and $289.4 worldwide to date. “Captain America” cost north of $180 million before marketing, making the production budget slightly less expensive than other Marvel tentpoles.
It’s not uncommon for comic book tentpoles on the scale of “Captain America” to significantly slide in subsequent weekends. Yet this film, saddled with negative reviews and poor word-of-mouth, fell on the steeper side with a drop closer to 2023’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania” (down 70% after a $106 million debut) than “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3...

Disney/Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” is proving to be as front-loaded as its mediocre opening weekend reception suggested it might, as industry estimates have the film earning $28 million in its second frame.
Should that hold, it would represent a 68% from its $88 million 3-day opening weekend and would be slightly below the $31.9 million second weekend of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” two years ago. With an estimated 10-day domestic total of $147 million, “Captain America: Brave New World” is on pace to finish with less than $200 million if it continues to drop at the pace of “Quantumania,” which fell another 60% in its third weekend.
In second place this weekend is Neon’s “The Monkey,” a pitch black horror comedy from “Longlegs” director Osgood Perkins that is opening to an estimated $13.5 million after a $5.8 million opening day from 3,200 theaters.

Neon’s horror comedy “The Monkey” is seeing and doing a strong opening weekend, though it’ll take silver at the box office behind Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” still on top of the charts but facing a substantial tumble in its second weekend.
“The Monkey” chopped into an estimated $5.8 million from 3,200 theaters across Friday and preview screenings. That puts it on track for Neon’s second-biggest opening weekend ever, only falling behind director Osgood Perkins’ prior horror film at the banner, last summer’s breakout “Longlegs.” Reviews have been positive for this follow-up, though audiences are mixed with ticketbuyer survey firm Cinema Score logging a “C+.” Horror films skew lower in those polls though; beyond that, “Longlegs” notched the same middling grade before legging out a healthy 3.31x multiplier on its opening weekend.
Even only taking into account this opening weekend, “The Monkey” is in a great position.

After earning more than $100 million from international markets while premiering back in November, Paddington in Peru, the third installment in the Paddington franchise, made its highly-anticipated theatrical debut in the U.S. at the same time as Captain America: Brave New World. Despite facing off against the biggest blockbuster of the year thus far, Paddington 3 earned $12.7 million over the weekend to take the #2 spot, and the heartfelt comedy followed that up with another $3.2 million on Monday, February 17 to reach $15 million at the domestic box office in only a few days. At the time of writing, Paddington in Peru sits at $16 million domestically and $115 million internationally for a global cumulative haul of $131 million.

The following contains spoilers for Paddington in Peru, in theaters now.
When the world needed him most, Paddington Bear returned. Paddington in Peru reunites moviegoers with the marmalade-loving bear, who embarks on grand adventures with the Brown family while spreading his brand of kindness and sincerity with those around him -- even if they don't realize they need it. Such kindness and optimism feel in short supply within 2025 pop culture, just as they did in 2017 when Paddington 2 came out. And like its predecessors, Paddington in Peru is a cut above the usual family movie. The third installment has a blend of action, humor, wit, and good-natured charm that will delight children as well as the parents taking them to the theater.
Is it better than Paddington 2? No, but it was always going to be tough to edge out a movie that held the title of Rotten Tomatoes' highest-rated film for several years.

Following its London premiere in November 2024, Paddington in Perurecently opened in limited U.S. theaters on February 14, 2025. As the lovable teddy bear travels to South America for a new adventure, the elephant in the room is the absence of star Sally Hawkins, who starred in the first two Paddington films under the direction of Paul King.
With Paul King also removed and replaced with Dougal Wilson, Paddington in Peru may lack the tear-jerking charms of the last franchise entry. Paddington 2 was received so well and viewed as such an improvement on the original that fans wonder why Hawkins and King left the franchise after delivering such a magical touch with the second film.

There was never any question whether Captain America: Brave New World would lock down the top spot at the box office over its opening weekend. However, even with the film's cool callbacks to The Incredible Hulk (2008) and the inclusion of President "Thunderbolt" Ross’ (Harrison Ford) fiery alter ego, Red Hulk, the latest MCU entry required the four-day holiday weekend to reach an estimated $100 million domestically. Captain America 4 also performed well over the normal three-day frame with $88.5 million (per The Numbers).
Surprisingly, Brave New World performed even better than Captain America: The First Avenger ($65.1 million) over its own opening weekend. Although, when adjusted for inflation, Chris Evans’ first solo film as Steve Rogers would have made $91.8 million in today’s money (three-day), thus trumping Anthony Mackie’s first big-screen adventure as the beloved Avenger. Fortunately for Marvel Studios, fans are enjoying Captain America: Brave New World, despite the scathing reviews from the critics,...

Led by “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney), the conjunction of Valentine’s Day falling on Friday and the Presidents Day weekend boosted U.S./Canada grosses to by far the best in 2025 so far. With over half ($88.5 million) of the weekend’s box office draw going to the latest Marvel release, theaters took in around $156 million. That’s 50 percent better than any weekend so far this year.
That counts as double relief for theaters. The needed strong total raises year-to-date numbers to 22 percent ahead of last year so far, and it also comes with reaffirmation that Marvel remains vital.
With its B- Cinemascore, the worst for an MCU film, as well as mostly bad reviews, there was real concern the first of three franchise releases in 2025 might fall flat. How it holds remains to be seen, but despite the headwinds it seemed to face, its gross is at or above expectations.

While most audiences flocked towards Captain America: Brave New World this weekend, some much-needed counter-programming was provided by Paddington in Peru. The third installment in the beloved children's franchise, based on the books by Michael Bond, over-performed in its domestic box office debut, having already amassed over $100 million from international markets. Paddington 3 was supposed to be released domestically in January but was delayed by around a month, allowing it to spread its charms like marmalade across the world first.

Disney/Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” is providing theaters with the early-year box office infusion that it hasn’t seen in a while, earning an estimated $88 million opening weekend from 4,105 theaters. With Presidents Day estimates included, that figure grows to $100 million over four days.
That is pushing the theatrical market to the best overall weekend it has seen in the first quarter since Presidents Day weekend in 2020, when “Sonic the Hedgehog” led totals to a $163.9 million 3-day, $182.9 million 4-day frame. Current industry estimates for this weekend stand at $155 million 3-day, $176 million 4-day.
But while short-term gains are assured, the longevity of “Captain America: Brave New World” is not. The film received mixed reviews from critics with a 51% Rotten Tomatoes score, and audiences have been as mixed with a B- on CinemaScore and an 80% Rt score.

“Captain America: Brave New World” delivered a heroic $88.5 million in its box office debut, with domestic ticket sales projected to climb to $100 million through the Presidents Day holiday on Monday.
Despite unfavorable reviews and terrible audience scores, the 35th entry in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe arrived in line with projections and ranks as the biggest opening weekend of the year.
Overseas, “Captain America: Brave New World” collected an additional $92.4 million for a global start of $192.4 million through Monday. In the $180-million tentpole, Anthony Mackie takes up the mantle as Cap from Chris Evans, who played the star-spangled Avengers in Marvel movies for nearly a decade. Directed by Julius Onah (“The Cloverfield Paradox), “Captain America: Brave New World” finds Mackie’s Sam Wilson at the center of international catastrophe after the presidential election of Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).
“This is the first blockbuster weekend of 2025,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

Captain America: Brave New World is looking presidential after all as Marvel Studios attempts to reboot the franchise with an entirely new cast
The year’s first tentpole is reporting a four-day domestic opening of $100 million over the long Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend, including $88.4 million for the three days. Numbers should shift again on Sunday, but either way, it is coming in ahead of expectations.
Globally, it’s starting off with $192.4 million after launching to $92.4 million internationally.
The movie scored one of the top domestic openings for the Presidents Day holiday and the biggest opening of 2025 to date. That’s no small feat considering that many critics dissed the movie. Nor were some moviegoers impressed — Brave New World received a B- CinemaScore from audiences, the worst grade given to any title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Not all viewers feel the same, of course. Brave New World...
