Super interesting and unexpected take on how legalization can effect illegal pot farming. The film lovingly highlights Humboldt County and captures the spirit of how modernity has crept and then suddenly sprung on a quiet, hidden world.
It's a solid performance about an older pot grower that's edged out of the business when it becomes legal. It's also a sad story about what it would be like to be at the age of retirement and trying to remain relevant in the pot world.
The most important elements of this film are Krisha Fairchild and the landscape. The film traces the trajectory of an aging artisan in the illegal and manual cultivation of cannabis against the technology, bureaucracy of today's world. And she begins to understand that her world is still in the past and that she needs to face modernity. Poor script but great performances by the rest of the crew.
Freeland is a compelling story that is well written and beautifully captured by the actors. It's a credible and authentic depiction of the cannabis world through one woman's perspective. The cinematography is beautiful.
A new strain of slow burn narrative movie making-all guns smoking, all puns intended. This role was custom rolled for Krista. She's like a mature Sharon Stone in her golden girls years. Whole movie was buzzing well and mellowed into a chilled finale ending of self realization and just accepting that all as just is.
