When you hear the name Studio Ghibli, you can’t help but envision those gorgeous hand-drawn animations, fantastical worlds, and tales that truly pull at your heartstrings. Founded by the incredible Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, the studio has been a staple of animated films for decades, providing us with such classics as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro.

Fans of Hayao Miyazaki's 1984 film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind have been whispering about a possible sequel for some time. However, newly-surfaced comments from the renowned director and his industry colleague, Hideaki Anno (Neon GenesisEvangelion), suggest that a Nausicaa continuation is still a long way off, if it's ever coming at all.
As reported by French anime blogger Catsuka, Hayao Miyazaki and Anno, who famously served as a key animator for Nausicaa, recently met together at Miyazaki's "Butaya" office in Tokyo. On X (formerly Twitter), Studio Khara (Rebuild of Evangelion films) featured a photo from this meetup, which depicts Anno beside a clean-shaven Miyazaki. According to Catsuka, Anno made a reference to the potential Nausicaa sequel that Ghibli fans began speculating about back in 2023, although not a good one for fans still hoping to see a follow-up movie someday. "He's [Anno] happy to see Miyazaki in good health,...

The world of professional wrestling was slowly picking up in the early 1990s and entering the mainstream. The biggest promotion at the time was WWE (then known as WWF), and the flagship star for the global juggernaut was none other than ‘The Immortal’ Hulk Hogan.
Hulk Hogan transcended the entire scene of professional wrestling with his larger-than-life American hero persona. He was an idol to children, a household name worldwide, and one of the biggest WWE superstars of all time. However, his popularity as a babyface had begun to wane after some years of his meteoric rise.

Warner Bros. is developing an exciting new action thriller called F.A.S.T., also known as Untitled Taylor Sheridan. The film is written by Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone and Sicario, with Gavin O’Connor now also working on the script.
According to a report from Daniel Richtman’s Patreon, F.A.S.T. will follow an ex-Marine who takes on dangerous missions to survive. Struggling to make ends meet, he agrees to run illegal operations for the DEA. His job? Infiltrating the drug trade to help take down powerful dealers.
The film is expected to be full of intense action, moral dilemmas, and high-stakes drama—something Sheridan is known for. His past projects, including Wind River and Hell or High Water, have explored similar themes of law enforcement, crime, and survival in harsh conditions.

Descriptions of the Apple TV+ series “Dope Thief” as a “drug ring drama” are not exactly accurate. Yes, it revolves around small-time crooks and friends Ray and Manny posing as DEA agents to rob equally small-time drug dealers. But it’s Manny and Ray’s relationship that matters most, especially when a simple job turns deadly, and an anonymous drug kingpin determined to recoup his loss puts a bounty on their heads. Becoming targets for the DEA doesn’t help either.

Known for co-creating Cinemax action drama series like “Banshee” and “Warrior,” American screenwriter, novelist, and producer Jonathan Tropper also has a strong soulful dramatic side to him with movies like “This Is Where I Leave You,” and “Kodachrome.” And for his latest series, “Your Friends & Neighbors,” the creator/writer seems to be leaning into that side of his taste once again.

Havocwriter and director Gareth Evans explains how his upcoming Netflix action movie features Tom Hardy in "f*cking beast mode." Known for directing action movies like The Raid: Redemption (2011) and The Raid 2 (2014), Evans' new movie follows Hardy's Walker, a detective who must fight his way through the criminal underworld to rescue a kidnapped politician's son. In addition to Hardy, the Havoc cast features Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant, and Luiz Guzmán, with the initial teaser trailer promising that the film will be a violent ride for audiences.
In a recent interview with Empire ahead of the Havoc release on Netflix on April 25, Evans previews some of what's to come from the film. The movie will mark a subtle shift away from something like The Raid 2 in the sense that Evans says, “It was never going to be a martial-arts film." Instead, he explains, "I wanted this to feel like...

George R. R. Martin has offered an update on the final Game of Thrones novels he is penning. Following 2011's A Dance with Dragons, the acclaimed author has been working on the sixth series installment, The Winds of Winter, for over a decade, with a potential seventh, A Dream of Spring, also on the way.
In an interview with Collider, Martin discussed the difficulties and challenges of producing successful adaptations of his books, acknowledging they may not always meet fan expectations. "You try to make the story as good as it can be, and some fans will like it, some fans will not like it," he said. "You're always going to get criticism, but you've got to keep trying. You've got to try to do everyone the best it can possibly be." Martin believes fans who are unsatisfied will always have the source material to go back to. The writer...

The following contains spoilers for The Lily, which was screened at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
Among the popular combat franchises, The Karate Kid movies rank high as being one of the best. They are tailored more towards teenagers than the Rocky movies, which is why Netflix has seen success with the Cobra Kai series.
This led to some franchises over the years trying to evolve and outdo the story of Daniel Larusso and Mr. Miyagi. Never Back Down is a solid example. But nothing could recapture the authenticity and nuances of their story. There is, however, one movie that could accomplish this, but it has to be more than just just 14 minutes long: The Lily.

Exciting, over-the-top clashes are what most fans come to Dragon Ball for. The fights they tend to love most have the highest stakes, the flashiest techniques, and the best choreography and animation. But Db is a franchise where fights exist to tell the story, rather than complement it, and so they also need to be well-written to succeed.
Impressive as the action in Dragon Ball fights can be, it's the stories they tell that make them so memorable. Every dramatic, emotional, and shocking moment in a battle can be attributed to quality writing, and the same is true of any and all hilarious gags. The best-written fights don't just have exciting moments, but feature creative strategies, character development, and perfect pacing.

DreamWorks has earned quite a reputation for crafting quality stories that engage all ages. From Shrek to How to Train Your Dragon, the studio has many well-known franchises in its catalog. Kung Fu Pandais among the most recognizable, and DreamWorks has found no shortage of creative inspiration for sequels and spin-offs. Po's story might have started as an inspirational underdog looking to become a warrior, but it has since evolved as the threat of his enemies has grown and his roster of allies has strengthened. The Kung Fu Panda series is a fantastic way to introduce someone to DreamWorks for its narratives, moving character arcs, and gorgeous animation.

The 1995 Sylvester Stallone sci-fi action movie "Judge Dredd" is kind of a hot mess. Based on the "Judge Dredd" stories in the British comic anthology series "2000 A.D.," the movie follows Stallone as the eponymous Judge Dredd, one of a number of "judges" who serve as judge, jury, and executioner in an attempt to stop rampant crime in an overpopulated city. With his iconic red and black helmet and massive golden epaulets on his shoulders, Stallone's Dredd is a pretty direct rendition of his comic book counterpart. While fans of the comics didn't get exactly what they wanted out of a "Judge Dredd" film until Pete Travis's "Dredd" came along in 2012, starring Karl Urban as the grimacing super-cop, there were at least a few nods to the source material in the Stallone version, including one seriously deep cut reference.

Several great stories about the underbelly of Victorian London get smushed together to yield something less great but often extremely entertaining in Steven Knight’s new Hulu drama, A Thousand Blows.
Knight comes off less like a master storyteller here than a highly enthusiastic autodidact learning new things and then flailing a bit in making connections. That just means that, at its worst, A Thousand Blows — which caps these first six episodes with a “To Be Continued” title card and clips from additional upcoming episodes — will send interested observers online in search of the true stories about all-female criminal gangs, nascent gloved boxing and 19th-century concert hall performers.
So you’ve got well-acted, well-produced, genre-bending period television and an inspiration to do further research? You could do far worse, and the wildly prolific Knight — he of Peaky Blinders, The Veil and All the Light We Cannot See — has done both better and worse.

One of the projects we’ve been crowing about coming up on Netflix in 2025 is the streamer’s first-ever medical procedural series, Pulse. The series has had the lid lifted on it with an April 2025 release date set. Here are all those first looks and a recap of everything we know so far.
First announced publicly in March 2024 (although in development for at least a year before that), the series marks a first for Netflix, at least when it comes to its English-language programming. Although it’s licensed plenty of medical dramas over the years, it’s never made one itself—at least not a procedural.

Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows often calls to mind HBO’s Warrior. They both take place in an inner-city slum at the end of the 19th century, though here its Victorian London rather than San Francisco. And both follow a newly arrived immigrant, in this case Jamaican boxer Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby), as he contends with discrimination, inequality, and criminality in his new home, often resulting in hand-to-hand combat. But while they may share a similar style, a combination of lackluster fight scenes and thin characterization ensures that A Thousand Blows never quite makes it into Warrior’s weight class.
Upon arriving in London, Hezekiah quickly finds himself drawn into the world of underground boxing, a sinister realm presided over by brothers Treacle Goodson (James Nelson Joyce) and Sugar (Stephen Graham). Before he knows it, he’s embroiled in a bitter blood feud with Sugar and recruited by criminal queenpin...

San, the titular character from Studio Ghibli's 1997 fantasy hit, Princess Mononoke, is one of the company's most beloved female icons. In a surprising act of tribute, a group of Chinese researchers have named their latest discovery after the iconic character.
As detailed on BBC News, a species of deepwater tilefish belonging to the Branchiostegidae family was recently confirmed as an unidentified species. The fish, which dwells within the South China Sea as deep as 200 meters below the surface, has a pale pink body with prominent red cheek stripes under its eyes. Noting this, the research team decided to name it "Branchiostegus sanae," in reference to Studio Ghibli's San. Until recently, there were only 30 described species in the family as a whole, making the finding particularly significant within the realm of oceanic research. "Finding a new species in this group is a rare and fortunate event, especially one as distinctive as Branchiostegus sanae,...

“Cobra Kai” might be officially wrapped up but there are plenty of other shows that can scratch that lingering itch.
When the “Karate Kid” sequel series was at it’s best it was a bingeable mix of ’80s nostalgia, sports drama, and high school melodrama that balanced comedy with more serious moments. Luckily there are a number of other great – and equally bingeable – shows out there.
Below are seven options for shows like “Cobra Kai” to try if you’re trying to capture the same vibes that made it such a great watch.

Ahead of SXSW next month, Amazon MGM Studios have released the official trailer for The Accountant 2, offering a first look at the return of 2x Academy Award-winner and former Batman actor Ben Affleck (Justice League; Argo; The Town) as the titular accountant and the Punisher himself Jon Bernthal (The Punisher; Daredevil: Born Again; The Wolf of Wall Street) as his equally lethal brother.
The film's synopsis reads, "Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) has a talent for solving complex problems. When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to “find the accountant,” Wolff is compelled to solve the case. Realizing more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff recruits his estranged and highly lethal brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal), to help. In partnership with U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), they uncover a deadly conspiracy, becoming targets of a ruthless network of killers who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin this July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. Things got back on track in late August with the hiring of a new showrunner – and that person is Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry,...

Action fans have patiently waited almost a decade for the return of Ben Affleck as the hitman/accountant Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2. Now, with the action thriller sequel set for release this year, returning director Gavin O’Connor has teased further plans for the franchise, and his hopes to wrap up Christian’s arc with The Accountant 3.
Discussing The Accountant 2 with Vanity Fair, O’Connor, who is best recognized for the Tom Hardy Mma drama Warrior alongside The Accountant series, revealed that he “always envisioned Christian Wolff’s story as a trilogy,” and has already been having discussions with Affleck about a further action-packed adventure.
“I have a lot of thoughts about what to do with the third. I’ve been thinking about it for a lot of years."

The crime gangs are back, baby … well, almost. While there are some pretty righteous gritty crime drama/thriller series out there, none are as brutal, brilliant, and bloody as Gangs of London. It’s been well over two years since season 2 dropped in the UK and the U.S., and since season 3 of the hit series was renewed. Now, thanks to Sky TV’s new trailer, we finally know when to expect its return, and it’s much sooner than you think. Gangs of London season 3 is set to premiere in the UK in March 2025, but when might it premiere in the U.S.?
The first season of Gangs of London premiered in April 2020 both in the UK and the U.S., then we were all left with a super long, nail-biting wait for season 2, which finally dropped in the UK in October 2022, followed by a November 2022 release date in the U.

While Dragon Ball is infamous for its frequent mishandling of its support cast, no Z-Warrior has been more underutilized, relevant to how important one would think they'd be, than Goten. The second son of Goku and the younger brother of Gohan, Goten has been a part of the franchise since Dbz's Majin Buu Saga. Yet for all the time he's existed, and how closely tied he is to two of the series' main characters, Goten barely feels like a character at all.
Goten has a two-dimensional personality, he's never received any significant character development, and he could be removed from every arc he's featured in without changing much about the story. Dragon Ball has failed Goten for decades, and with Dragon Ball Super finally coming back, the series only has one more chance to rectify this. The Saiyan teen just enjoyed his biggest role to date in Dragon Ball Super's Super Hero Saga,...

After two-plus decades of build-up, One Piece has finally entered what is arguably the most anticipated arc in the anime's history: the Elbaf Arc. The Land of Giants is home to many of the strongest warriors the Grand Line has to offer, and given the Straw Hat Pirates' intensifying conflict with the World Government, Elbaf is all set to be the staging ground for the most important events of the series thus far.
As is the case with most One Piece arcs, Elbaf has introduced a variety of memorable outfits to the series, many of which involve Monkey D. Luffy and the other members of the Straw Hat Pirates. Although the Elbaf Arc is sure to feature several more iconic outfits as its narrative starts to take shape, it's already solidified itself as one of the most visually identifiable arcs in Eiichiro Oda's iconic manga.

A take on Ivan Reitman’s 2014 sports movie, Draft Day, is coming to television. The movie, which starred Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, and the late Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) focused on an NFL football general manager, but the new series will be set in a different sports world - the NBA.
Per Deadline, Lionsgate TV, SpringHill, and Madison Wells are developing the Draft Day series that will “capture the drama and excitement of watching basketball players get drafted and fulfill their dreams,” in a similar fashion to the Reitman film. The film version currently has a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $29.8 million at the worldwide box office.
NBA star LeBron James and Maverick Carter founded SpringHill, which will executive produce the TV series. Madison Wells, which produced 2014’s Draft Day, will produce the show. No writer has been attached to the project.

"Star Trek: Section 31" takes the franchise on a road less traveled by bringing back "Star Trek: Discovery" standout Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and putting her in charge of a heist. Unlike the "Star Wars'" take on the heist movie theme in 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the often more idealistic and pacifistic "Trek" opts for a far more light-hearted route. "Star Trek: Section 31" is B-movie trash in the best possible way, as the Academy Award winning Yeoh rocks her fallen tyrant character's new role as the head of arguably the most ragtag team a "Star Trek" project has ever given fans.
Among the key members of the film's Section 31 special ops team is the unpredictable and intense Fuzz, who probably wouldn't be a main character in just about any other "Star Trek" film. Fuzz is played by South African actor Sven Ruygrok, a rising star who's been making...

The Dragon Ball franchise has been around for three decades, and it helped to create a new generation of anime fans in the mid-'90s. Most of Dragon Ball's characters are martial artists who possess superhuman strength, durability, and speed, and many of them can use ki as a weapon. All of these characters are strong in their way, but certain characters stand above all the rest in terms of power.
Many powerful Dragon Ball characters have appeared in non-canon video games, movies, and anime. Unfortunately, they do not compare to the characters who are part of the official canon. With the addition of Dragon Ball Super, most of the franchise's strongest canon characters are literal gods or beings with god-level strength.
Updated by Sage Ashford on January 23rd, 2025: With Dragon Ball having existed for decades, it's no surprise there are tons of incredibly powerful characters within its universe.

Lapis was the first playable character to be revealed for Hyper Light Breaker, and her all-around powerful SyComs make her an excellent Breaker to test out builds with. Her more general SyCom, Warrior, gives bonus stat increases whenever you upgrade it, meaning she gains stats faster than other Breakers. This also means that you can take her Warrior SyCom along to almost any build; you choose to upgrade whichever stats are most helpful in the moment, and you get a slight bonus while you do it without having to worry about synergy.
Generally, your SyCom and your Holobytes are the most important in determining your build, no matter which of the three playable Breakers you're playing. Holobytes are your modifiers that increase your stats, damage, and other traits, while your SyCom is Breaker-dependent and includes unique passives. Like the others, Lapis has two SyComs: Lightweaver and Warrior. For this Dps-focused build,...

Before donning a cape and becoming a paragon for supervillainy as Homelander in The Boys, once upon a time Antony Starr played a sexually irresistible criminal impersonating a sheriff in the Cinemax series Banshee. Despite the last episode of the show airing in 2016, the series has found a bump in interest on streaming as the hyper-violent crime thriller is now in the Max Top 10 TV charts.
Co-created by Jonathan Tropper - who also created Warrior and the upcoming Apple TV+ series Your Friends and Neighbors - Banshee is the story of an ex-con who assumes the identity of a deceased incoming sheriff to Banshee Pennsylvania. Under this new identity of Lucas Hood, the fake sheriff attempts to reconnect with his former lover, dodge the attacks from a powerful crime lord, all while dispensing his own brand of small-town justice. It's a wild ride with splashy action that doesn't ground itself too deeply in reality.

The Coen Brothers have established themselves as the brotherly duo behind some of the best deadpan comedy thrillers of all-time, and one of their best is now streaming for free. The pair began their directorial career in 1984 with Blood Simple, starring John Getz and Frances McDormand. They followed that up with an incredible run of movies, including Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, and The Hudsucker Proxy. But, in 1996, they released what many claim to be their pièce de résistance, Fargo.
Fans of the Coen Brothers, and new viewers can now stream Fargo absolutely free on Tubi. Like many of their movies, Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed Fargo, while assembling an all-star cast for the film. The movie re-united them with McDormand (who is also Joel's wife), while adding in William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare, all in break-out roles.
