Hailed as one of the modern horror maestros, M. Night Shyamalan is facing a million-dollar lawsuit for copyright infringement. Although the suit was initially filed in 2020, after Shyamalan’s series Servant started airing on Apple TV+, it was thrown out of court within months by a federal judge.

However, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals revived the same in 2022, and the legal battle ensued. The first trial took place on January 14th, where Shyamalan was presented which brought the case back to the limelight.

The plaintiff, Francesca Gregorini, an Italian-born independent movie director filed the case accusing Shyamalan of adapting his series from her 2013 movie The Truth About Emanuel. However, the defense attorney claimed that Gregorini’s claims are unfounded and she is seeking credit for something she had no involvement in.

Director M. Night Shyamalan went on trial on Tuesday over allegations that he copied from an independent film to make the Apple TV+ show “Servant.”

Francesca Gregorini, an Italian-born director, is suing Shyamalan and Apple for $81 million, alleging that the show stole key elements from her 2013 movie, “The Truth About Emanuel.”

Her attorney, Patrick Arenz, showed jurors clips of both projects during his opening statement on Tuesday in federal court in Riverside, Calif. He argued that both depict a delusional mother who cares for a doll as though it is a real baby, and a nanny who is complicit in the delusion.

“This is a simple case,” Arenz told the jury. “There would be no ‘Servant’ without ‘Emanuel.'”

The “Outlander” and “For All Mankind” producer joins the new Prime Video series also as a writer and EP following last week’s news of Rafe Judkins’ exit as part of a creative overhaul for the show, along with the departure of other writers and executive producers including Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

“God of War” marks Moore’s first big TV project since returning to Sony Pictures Television in June under a new multi-year deal. He had left the company in 2021 for Disney’s 2oth Television. Under the partnership, his Tall Ship Productions banner will develop and produce scripted series for cable and streaming platforms with longtime collaborators Maril Davis and Ben McGinnis.

Moore, who previously worked at Sony TV 2010-2020, developed and executive produced Apple TV+’s “For All Mankind” and Starz’s “Outlander.

Prime Video isn't necessarily known for its original science fiction television shows just yet, but in the last few years, the streamer has made a concerted effort to rectify that. The Expanse is available on Prime Video and is the most well-known of the genre, having a much-celebrated run of six seasons, but it originally aired on SyFy; Battlestar Galactica was also picked up by the streamer with great success. The “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Oscar winner is set to star in “Blade Runner 2099,” Amazon Prime Video’s limited series follow-up to the 2017 film “Blade Runner 2049,” according to Deadline.

“2049” was itself a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic “Blade Runner,” which was based on legendary writer Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.

At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.

The 1980s enjoys a privileged, some might even argue inflated position in the sci-fi pantheon. The cult classic 1980s film Electric Dreams will get a modern-day adaptation. Released in 1984, Electric Dreams is a comedy sci-fi film that follows the story of an unusual love rivalry between an AI desktop computer and its human owner, who are pining after the same woman. Electric Dreams was directed by Steve Barron and written by Rusty Lemorande.

According to Variety, Electric Dreams will now get a remake. Film executive Paul Davidson has acquired the rights to make Electric Dreams. The new Electric Dreams script will be written by Brian T. Arnold, and the project is supported by original screenwriter Lemorande. Lemorande, Davidson, and Arnold all expressed enthusiasm towards the project upon its announcement.

Veteran film executive Paul Davidson has acquired the remake rights to “Electric Dreams,” the 1984 film written and produced by Rusty Lemorande.

Davidson — who previously ran The Orchard and Idw Entertainment — struck the deal with Lemorande, who retained the rights to the film after its release nearly four decades ago. Brian T. Arnold, whose script “In the End” appeared on the 2021 Black List and is being produced by Sister, will pen the new movie.

Lila Rawlings, head of creative: film and TV at “Roma” filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron’s U.K.-based outfit Esperanto Filmoj, is joining British independent production company Motive Pictures as an executive producer.

Rawlings’ remit at Motive will encompass both TV and film projects as the company scales its team in the wake of its first wave of productions, including the Ruth Wilson drama “The Woman in the Wall” for BBC and Showtime.

At Esperanto, Rawlings oversaw a slate of projects with Sarah Solemani, Jack Thorne and Charlize Theron and served as executive producer on “The Shepherd,” one in a series of films financed by Disney, directed by Iain Softley and starring John Travolta. Previously, Rawlings was executive producer at Left Bank Pictures where she was responsible for several projects, including “Sitting in Limbo,” a BAFTA- winning drama for BBC One and “Electric Dreams” for Amazon, Sony TV and Channel 4.

Television has never been more daring and genre-friendly, but this is particularly true when it comes to science fiction. Sci-fi is in the middle of a Renaissance where streaming services finally have the budget to indulge in expansive sci-fi series that don’t have to sell themselves short. Additionally, anthology storytelling has become a popular formula for modern television that allows a powerful theme to link together otherwise disparate episodes or seasons of content.

Nothing catches fire in Valentina Maurel’s I Have Electric Dreams, but the atmosphere is so inflammable, the air so taut, everything could ignite at any moment. True to its title, this cumulatively harrowing tale of a 16-year-old girl and her estranged, anger-prone father feels like it’s been yanked out of an electric storm. Even the frames carry a kind of static, throbbing in-sync with parent and child as they crash into each other only to drift away and collide again, each confrontation more seismic than the others. To be watching Maurel’s feature debut is to bear witness to a self-destructive waltz; there are scenes of almost unbearable sadness and loneliness, but Dreams is no dirge, and all dread the film accrues only makes its closing catharsis so much more affecting.

The smashing success of "Black Mirror" is likely due to the crushing anxiety that technology has and continues to infect the entire world with. There are few subjects as universally relatable as the Internet, which has bridged communication with people around the globe at the same time as it has created dangerous rifts within communities. Although the series began on the United Kingdom-based Channel 4 network in 2011, executives there didn't gel with its creative direction or its budget. As a result, "Black Mirror" moved to Netflix starting in season 3, which has undoubtedly helped the show pick up a more international audience.

Spanish production and distribution company Elamedia has acquired “Tengo sueños eléctricos” (I Have Electric Dreams), the Locarno prize-winning debut by director Valentina Maurel, which will screen in the Horizontes Latinos section of the San Sebastian Film Festival. Since the TV academy began regularly honoring original music scores in the 1960s, there has essentially always been a clear distinction between compositions for continuing and limited series. The Best Music for Limited Series Emmy category was established early on in order to adequately recognize the music behind single-season or one-off scripted programs apart from traditional comedy and drama series. This year’s five contenders are about as eclectic as can be, with plots that collectively span multiple centuries and continents.

The current Best Music for Limited Series nominees are “1883” (Paramount+), “Moon Knight” (Disney+), “Station Eleven” (HBO Max), “A Very British Scandal” (Prime Video) and “The White Lotus” (HBO). Mireille Enos is returning to AMC.

Deadline is reporting that the star who headlined The Killing for the cabler has joined the cast of Straight Man.

The series keeps Bob Odenkirk in the AMC family following his role as Saul Goodman in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

"Straight Man is a mid-life crisis tale set at Railton College, told in the first person by William Henry Devereaux, Jr. (Odenkirk), the unlikely chairman of the English department in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt," reads the cabler's official description.

Bryan Cranston and James Degus’ Moonshot Entertainment has entered into a partnership with Village Roadshow Television.

Under the deal, the two companies will work together to source, develop, and produce television shows across all platforms and genres. Village Roadshow TV executive vice president Alix Jaffe will work closely with Cranston and Degus, as well as Village Roadshow Entertainment Group CEO Steve Mosko, on the new initiative. Cranston previously worked with Mosko when the latter was the head of Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind “Breaking Bad.”

Lenny Von Dohlen, best known for playing Harold Smith on Twin Peaks, has died.

He was 63.

The actor's sister, Catherine Von Dohlen, shared the news in a Facebook post this week.

"The world lost a magnificent man on July 5. Brother Len was passionate about everything and everyone," the social media post reads. 

"He was always leading; whether it be riveting conversation, an artistic creation or a trip to new places. He loved a good laugh."

"He continues on his spiritual journey. Living life full in his memory," Catherine wrote.

Von Dohlen appeared on four episodes of Twin Peaks, as well as the spinoff movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

He played Harold, an acquaintance of Laura Palmer, the character whose death kicked off the series premiere.

Laura gave her secret diary to Harold, but her friends wanted access to it to help investigate her murder.

Lenny Von Dohlen, star of Twin Peaks and Electric Dreams, has died. He was 64.

He died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles after a long illness, according to his longtime manager Steven J. Wolfe.

Von Dohlen made his film debut in Bruce Beresford’s Tender Mercies, a performance that landed him the leading role in MGM/UA’s Electric Dreams.

He also scored leading roles for Under the Biltmore Clock, Blind Vision, Jennifer 8, Ed Zwick’s Leaving Normal, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and the title role in Billy Galvin, where Von Dohlen starred opposite Karl Malden.

Born in Augusta, Georgia and raised in Goliad, Texas, Von Dohlen grew too tall to realize a childhood dream of becoming a jockey.

Born on December 22, 1958 in Augusta, Ga, and raised in Goliad, Texas, Von Dohlen made his screen debut in the 1981 telefilm Kent State and had a small role in the Robert Duvall country music pic Tender Mercies before getting his big break in Electric Dreams. He starred as Miles Harding, an architect whose new PC becomes self-aware and develops a love triangle his Miles’ neighbor (Virginia Madsen). The romantic comedy was the debut feature of prolific music video helmer Steve Barron, who went on to direct for TV, earning an Emmy nom for Merlin.

From the opening frames of HBO’s series “The Gilded Age,” the music of composers Harry Gregson-Williams and Rupert Gregson-Williams gives viewers a sense of the ambition and drive of “new money” in conflict with the “old money” of 1880s New York.

The brothers — Harry based in Los Angeles, Rupert just outside London — generally work on different projects, and most often for features.

But both are past Emmy nominees and this is their second TV collaboration, after 2019’s Hulu series “Catch-22.” Given the sheer volume of music demanded by “The Gilded Age,” nearly six hours for the 10 episodes, they were happy to reunite professionally.

“It was good to have two sets of hands on it,” says Harry. “Upwards or 35, sometimes 40 minutes of music [per episode] had to be written, approved, orchestrated and actually played live. It was a big job, and it stretched us.”

Exclusive: Kellie Madison (Never Back Down: Revolt) has signed on to direct a supernatural action thriller, centered on a geothermic explosion inside the ruins of Pompeii, for Pressman Film.

The script for the as-yet untitled feature will be penned by Kalen Egan and Travis Sentell (Electric Dreams). Edward R. Pressman and Kelly McKee of Pressman Film are on board to produce along with veteran Korean producer Lewis Taewan Kim. Korean VFX company Westworld will co-produce, with Jihyun Kim (Train to Busan) leading creature design and concept artwork.

“I’ve been a fan of Pressman Film since the original Bad Lieutenant. I’m so excited to be collaborating with them to create something really special and unique,” said Madison. “The type of hybrid production team we are putting together has never been done before.

Mark Lanza has been re-elected president of the Motion Picture Sound Editors, the nonprofit organization of professional sound and music editors.

Currently based at Sony Pictures Studios, Lanza has been a sound professional for 30 years and is credited on more than 250 feature films and television shows, including JFK, Glory and Born on the Fourth of July. He received the Mpse’s Golden Reel Award for Amazon’s Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams in 2019.
