Glen Powell & Barry Jenkins Team Up for Big-Budget Sci-Fi Adaptation
Image
Filmmaker Barry Jenkins, director of Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King as well as the Oscar-winning Moonlight, will be teaming up with the highly sought-after Glen Powell, star of Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick, for a big-budget science fiction thriller. The project, titled The Natural Order, will be released by Universal, with Jenkins set to direct the picture and Powell set to produce and star.

The Natural Order is an adaptation of an as-yet-unpublished novel by Matt Aldrich, who will co-write the script with Jenkins. Aldrich previously co-wrote Coco for Disney, as well as the drama Spinning Man in 2018. The Natural Order will be his debut novel, which is said to be a high-concept sci-fi thriller about the pursuit of eternal life. More in-depth plot details are being kept under wraps for now.

The film will mark the first production of Powell and Dan Cohen's company Barnstorm, whose first-look deal with Universal began last month.

Blu-Ray Review: Guy Pearce Powers Twisty Thriller ‘Spinning Man’
One of Guy Pearce’s best known roles was as an amnesiac whose memory slightly comes back to him via Polaroid pictures in Memento, and in Spinning Man he’s afflicted with a similar condition.

Evan Birch (Pearce) is a college philosophy professor who, although being a family man (Minnie Driver plays his wife), has lecherous tendencies to [...]

Posterized April 2018: ‘You Were Never Really Here,’ ‘Disobedience,’ ‘Zama,’ and More
“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

Despite only having four Fridays, April is packed with new releases. It seems like all the studios are trying to get some traction for their smaller films before the summer months arrive and take over (even though Disney is continuing its early tracks for blockbusters with Avengers: Infinity War bowing April 27).

As such there are a few posters I couldn’t fit into any sections below including the fun self-own quote-centric sheet for Godard Mon Amour (limited April 20), the attractively illustrative collage for Lowlife (limited April 6), and the...

Guy Pearce at an event for The Rover (2014)
'Spinning Man': Film Review
Guy Pearce at an event for The Rover (2014)
"Do you have trouble remembering things sometimes?" Guy Pearce's character asks early on in Simon Kaijser's murder mystery. For Pearce, the line must have had emotional resonance, considering that it calls to mind one of his very best movies, Memento. Unfortunately, Spinning Man, based on the acclaimed novel by George Harrar, doesn't benefit from the comparison. Although it pretends to traffic in such weighty themes as how memories can be either real or imagined, the plodding thriller mainly spins its own wheels until reaching a baffling conclusion. Only the talents of its estimable cast, also including Pierce Brosnan and Minnie...

Guy Pearce at an event for The Rover (2014)
Film Review: ‘Spinning Man’
Guy Pearce at an event for The Rover (2014)
In an alternate universe, Guy Pearce plays sleazeheads, killers, cutthroats with attitude, and various other magnetically bent souls — in other words, just what he plays now — only he does it in movies that aren’t semi-off-the-radar hipster curios and genre throwaways. He does it with the stardom that “L.A. Confidential” and “Memento” promised. “Spinning Man” is one more halfway interesting, not-fully-realized-enough low-budget “dark” thriller that gives Pearce the chance to strut his chops. For a while, he’s quite good as a suave, confident weasel — a philosophy professor who becomes the chief suspect in the case of a high-school cheerleader who disappeared.

Did he make contact with her at the local lake, lure her into his car, do things that he shouldn’t have, and — in the end — kill her? It sure looks that way. “Spinning Man” loads up an accusatory pile of circumstantial evidence against its main character, making him seem guilty enough,...

Guy Pearce & Pierce Brosnan in First Trailer for Thriller 'Spinning Man'
"I'm terrified what else you could convince yourself of..." Lionsgate has debuted the trailer for a murder mystery thriller titled Spinning Man, adapted from a book by George Harrar. This philosophical thriller is about a family man and esteemed professor at a college, who gets entangled in the investigation of a missing woman. His "off-campus dalliances" with many of his students make him the main suspect, though we don't know who really took her. Guy Pearce plays the professor, and Pierce Brosnan plays the detective on the case, intent on pegging him as the murderer. The cast includes Minnie Driver, Odeya Rush, Alexandra Shipp, Clark Gregg, Jamie Kennedy, Sterling Beaumon, and Freya Tingley. Despite this strong cast, I actually think this looks pretty bad, a fairly derivative thriller with nothing interesting or new to offer. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Simon Kaijser's Spinning Man, direct from YouTube...

Spinning Man Trailer Deals Out Abduction with Pierce Brosnan and Guy Pearce
Lionsgate has released the first trailer for their upcoming thriller Spinning Man, along with the first poster. Guy Pearce stars alongside Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver in this taut and twisty thriller, which serves as a gripping examination of crime, punishment, and conscience. While Guy Pearce's character may seem on the outside to be a harmless family man, he may be hiding a deadly secret.

Evan Birch (Guy Pearce) is a family man and esteemed professor at a distinguished college, where his charm and reputation have made his philosophy class very popular. When a female student named Hannah goes missing, Evan's previous off-campus dalliances make his wife (Minnie Driver) question his alibi. Gruff police Detective Malloy (Pierce Brosnan) has even more reason to be suspicious when crucial evidence makes Evan the prime suspect in Hannah's disappearance. Suddenly, the questions Evan faces aren't merely academic, they're a matter of life or death.
