George Jones Credited For Greatest Country Song Ever Recorded

George Jones had countless hits in his long career. His career began in the 50s when he signed with Starday Records and released “Why Baby Why.” The song became the first hit of many. With the popularity of Elvis Presley, George Jones released several “rockabilly” songs, which he later said in his memoir that he regretted.

Lawsuit Over Showtime’s ‘George and Tammy’ Thrown Out by Judge
Image
A federal judge dismissed the ongoing lawsuit over Showtime’s “George & Tammy” limited series last week. The suit was originally filed by the estate of George Richey over misrepresentation and unjust enrichment.

Sheila Slaughter Richey, the executrix of the estate of the late George Richey, served as the plaintiff in this case. The lawsuit claimed that Steve Zahn’s portrayal of Richey led to “unjust enrichment and tortious interference.” Specifically, the suit revolved around the opening credits of the show, which stated the series was based on Georgette Jones’ book, “The Three of Us: Growing Up With Tammy and George.” Jones, the daughter of George Jones and Tammy Wynette, also served as a consulting producer on the six-episode series and previously faced legal action from Sheila Slaughter Richey over the contents of her book.

But in the ruling a Delaware judge noted that a plaintiff “who cries unjust enrichment must have actually enriched somebody.

Judge Dismisses ‘George & Tammy’ Lawsuit Against Showtime Over Portrayal of George Richey
Image
A judge in Delaware has dismissed a lawsuit filed against Showtime over the limited series “George & Tammy” and its portrayal of the late George Richey, who was married to Tammy Wynette after her divorce from George Jones. In tossing the suit out, the judge ruled that, whatever merits there might be to the complaints of the plaintiff, Sheila Slaughter Richey, there was no basis for including Showtime Networks in the suit at all, let alone as the sole defendant.

The suit had claimed that George Richey was disparaged and made into the villain of “George & Richey.” Judge Stephanos Bibas did not take issue with that characterization made by Sheila Slaughter Richey’s lawyers, and he dismissed it without prejudice, meaning it could be refiled. But his ruling said essentially that the plaintiff’s beef was solely with Georgette Jones, the daughter of George Jones, who was not named as a defendant,...

Why George & Tammy Season 2 (Likely) Isn't Happening, Explained
Image
George & Tammy isn't likely going to have a second season, given the premise of the show and where it decided to end the story. George & Tammy premiered in December 2022, and the fantastic biopic tells the story of legendary country musicians, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, covering their relationship together as well as their careers. Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain star as the titular characters, being nominated and winning numerous awards for their respective performances. Alongside Chastain and Shannon were performances by Steve Zahn and Walton Goggins before his incredible role in Fallout.

Despite being well-received and featuring a pair of standout career performances from Shannon and Chastain, George & Tammy only ran for one season, and a total of six episodes on Showtime. With the series not following Tammy Wynette up to her tragic death, it was unclear if a second season would continue the story, but the...

Jessica Chastain Receives American Cinematheque Award; Chuck Roven Accepts Power Of Cinema Honor
Image
As I approached her Friday night at her table where well-wishers were congratulating her on being this year’s recipient of the 38th American Cinematheque Award, Jessica Chastain caught my eye and immediately grabbed me and exclaimed, “Can you believe this? Can you believe this?, I am so stressed out tonight. I have never been so stressful. This is like going to your own funeral, ” she laughed before I told her she has had a remarkable career to date and deserves this kind of career recognition that the Cinematheque gives for those they define in mid-career. Chastain isn’t even 50 yet. She told me she knew she might get emotional but was going to do everything she could not to cry when delivering her speech. For this rabid film fan getting this honor from an organization that lives and breathes movies and their continued restoration and health, it was a very big deal.

With ‘The End,’ Joshua Oppenheimer and Michael Shannon Wanted to Prove ‘Unraveling Lies’ Is a Lot Easier When You’re Singing
Image
For filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer, the beginning of “The End” came somewhat unexpectedly as an extension of his work in documentary. This might sound strange considering this narrative feature is a musical set in the bunker of a family partly responsible for an apocalyptic event 25 years prior, but throughout the project’s inception, production, and edit, Oppenheimer was constantly drawing upon his skills as a documentarian to further his examination of humanity’s ability to — drawing upon a fitting allegory — “fiddle while Rome burns.”

To hear Oppenheimer tell it, if there were a way to have told the story depicted in “The End” as a documentary, he probably would have. In a recent interview with IndieWire, he said he intended to follow 2012’s “The Act of Killing” and its 2014 followup, “The Look of Silence,” with a third documentary about the oligarchs who exploited the pain and suffering of those featured in these films to enrich themselves.

Michael Shannon Embraces The Surprises Of Bleak Musical The End & Reflects On His Time In The DC Universe
Image
The End's Michael Shannon explores more than just the end of the world in Joshua Oppenheimer's uniquely bleak take on the movie musical. Set years after ecological events have rendered most life on the surface of the Earth impossible, the film follows a family and their personal staff as they struggle to maintain a sense of normalcy in their bunker deep beneath the Earth. The patriarch of the family, only known as Father in the movie, is an interesting contradiction of a man whose efforts to assuage his guilt as a former industrialist are explored throughout the film.

It's a powerful film performance by Michael Shannon, with flashes of the intensity that have often defined some of his most famous characters like Zod from Man of Steel or Nelson Van Alden from Boardwalk Empire. However, there's also a deep vulnerability and almost pitiable element to the character that Shannon...

Michael Shannon movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
In recent years Michael Shannon has begun to emerge as one of film’s most versatile and ubiquitous actors. Often cast his villains or law enforcement agents Shannon always brings a brooding intensity to his roles and manages to use that intensity for both good characters and bad that often know a lot more than they are saying.

Shannon first started his career as a stage actor in Chicago. He gained a great deal of notice and other roles from his appearances in the plays of a then little-known actor turned playwright named Tracy Letts. Shannon credits his work in the plays of Letts for the film and television opportunities that came his way after he appeared in two of Lett’s acclaimed plays “Bug” and “Killer Joe.”

He returned to the stage, receiving a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role as Jamie...

Jessica Lange is coming for that Emmy record with ‘The Great Lillian Hall’
Image
“The Great Lillian Hall” reunites three “American Horror Story” actresses to deliver a tour de force in TV movies. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Lily Rabe all star in this HBO TV Movie, directed by Michael Cristofer, that follows the careers of fictional Broadway actress Lillian Hall.

It’s Lange who plays Lillian and the veteran actress has turned in another masterclass in acting. She has always been a commanding screen presence and that doesn’t change here as she depicts a legendary actress as a triumph on stage but a nervous wreck in rehearsals while she battles with early dementia. It’s always a treat watching icons play icons (Lange did this again in “Feud: Bette and Joan”) and while Lillian is fictional, the impact is no less felt. Critics agree, this could be Lange’s greatest performance yet.

Caryn James (The Hollywood Reporter) observed: “Jessica Lange is perfection...

Glen Powell Hulu Series ‘Chad Powers’ Adds Steve Zahn
Image
Steve Zahn has joined Glen Powell in the upcoming Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers,” Variety has learned.

The series was originally picked up at Hulu in February. Powell will star in the series in addition to co-creating and co-writing the pilot with Michael Waldron, with both serving as executive producers. The show is based on the Chad Powers character created by Eli Manning for his Epsn+ docuseries “Eli’s Places.” Manning wanted to learn more about the walk-on process for college football, so he donned a wig and prosthetic makeup so he could go undercover during the Penn State football tryouts.

The official description for the series states, “When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s (Powell) college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”

Zahn will play Jake Hudson, described as “the charismatic head coach of a flagging college football program.

Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone is coming for that Emmy with ‘Under the Bridge’
Image
Lily Gladstone has had a breakout year these past 12 months. She featured in season three of FX’s “Reservation Dogs” but, most impressively, stole the show in Martin Scorsese‘s Oscar-nominated epic “Killers of the Flower Moon.” She actually came close to winning Best Actress for her turn in that film but, alas, had to settle for earning her first-ever Oscar nomination. Not a bad consolation prize.

Now, however, she could snag her inaugural Emmy nomination thanks to her terrific performance in “Under the Bridge,” the Hulu true crime series that documents the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk in 1997. Gladstone features as Police Officer Cam Bentland, who investigates the murder. Her turn expounds upon what we gleaned from her work in “Killers of the Flower Moon” — this is a wonderful actress who can communicate so much with so little dialogue. Every facial expression tells us exactly what the character is...

Emmys spotlight: Annette Bening shines bright in ‘Apples Never Fall’
Image
Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.

The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.

Bening always has a commanding screen presence and, in truth, she could play most roles in her sleep, such as is the might of her talent. With “Apples Never Fall,” she is afforded...
