Here’s a trivia question for everyone: What’s the connection between Star Trek: The Original Series and the movies The Goonies, Throw Momma from the Train, and Scrooged? The answer is… Logan Ramsey, the late, great character actor whose career spanned from 1948 to 1999 and who would have turned 104 on March 21, 2025.
Star Trek fans will recall that Ramsey low-key chewed the scenery as Proconsul Claudius Marcus in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Bread and Circuses.” He’s the character who gave his slave, Drusilla (Lois Jewell), to Captain Kirk (William Shatner), so that Kirk could enjoy “some last hours as a man” before his execution. Sadly, Ramsey died of a heart attack at the age of 79 in 2000.
In addition to Star Trek, he counted among his many theater, movie, and television credits The Devil’s Disciple and The Great Indoors, both on stage; the films Head, Walking Tall, Any Which Way You Can,...

“Matlock” is not exactly the hottest piece of IP of 2024. The original series premiered in 1986 and starred Andy Griffith as an older widowed criminal defense lawyer who caught people off guard with his down-home country vibes before, destroying them on the stand and charging a boatload of money.
In that sense, the new “Matlock” — from “Jane the Virgin” creator Jennie Snyder Urman — is very much a classic gender-swapped reboot of old “Matlock.” Kathy Bates plays a 75 year-old widow named Madeline “Matty” Matlock who returns to the world of law after decades away. She has to get used to how things have changed since she was last a practicing lawyer, and an entire law firm has to get used to her quirky old lady ways, which hide a sharp and unexpectedly brilliant mind.
In another sense, this new “Matlock” is not a reboot at all. The original “Matlock” exists as a...

The Great Indoors, starring Joel McHale, faced cancellation for depicting millennials as easily offended. Critics panned the sitcom's premise, leading to low ratings and a one-season run before cancellation. Millennials' sensitivity towards the series ironically contributed to its lack of renewal for a second season.
One CBS sitcom series focused on millennial culture faced cancelation for the most ironic reason. The network aired The Great Indoors premiere in October 2016, and by 2017, the show was on the chopping block. The comedy series initially had a time slot leading into Thursday night's The Big Bang Theory, but the headliner didn't live up to its position in the 2016-2017 CBS lineup. As such, the show became another sitcom canceled after one season. Ultimately, the cancelation came down to the show's premise, which, ironically but perhaps not unintentionally, turned off some of its viewers.

Television is an unforgiving business. Most shows merely end up as promising pitches, as the process of getting a pilot on the air is painstaking. Network television, while viewed as a primitive medium, is more cutthroat than any media outlet, as a show is only as good as its last season's ratings. Low viewership will squash any show's dreams. These are the kind of harsh realities of life that Joel McHale's character would impart to the so-called coddled millennials that he worked with in the short-lived sitcom, The Great Indoors. The CBS show experienced surprising success during the onset stages of the first season in 2016. During the second half of the season, The Great Indoors' ratings plummeted, and the show was cancelled upon the season's conclusion in 2017. Some would claim the show was not so much cancelled, but rather, a victim of "cancel culture," due to offending millennials, but in reality,...

Alex Edelman’s go-to order at Barney Greengrass is whitefish on an everything bagel with a side of scrambled eggs. The Upper West Side institution isn’t exactly his local haunt — he lives out of a blue Samsonite bag these days — but this New York deli is a magnet for the Boston-born comic. “It’s where my friends eat and argue,” he explains. “It’s where ideas start to take root. Oh, and since the show did well, I can always get a table.”
That show, Just for Us, is the Jewish writer’s celebrated narrative about the infamous night he attended a meeting of white nationalists in a Queens apartment. An extended downtown run led to stints on Broadway and around the world. Its recent return to L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum (March 25 to 31) and an HBO special (April 6) are his grand finale, a complicated one for the 35-year-old.

Community was created by Dan Harmon, one of Rick & Morty's writers, and features a star-studded cast. The comedy show defies the traditional sitcom structure by crossing the boundaries of its limited set in an absurd fashion, often turning the campus of a community college into an actual battlefield or even the site of a zombie outbreak. The show revolves around Jeff Winger and the study group he organized to hit on the girl he likes. Despite the differences between each member of the group, they develop an unusual friendship.
Community is a beloved show by many but went through plenty of obstacles to reach its "six seasons and a movie" goal, prophesied by Abed, one of the main characters. The show was canceled in season 5 by NBC after two main characters left the show and other core cast members' contracts were about to expire, but Community was saved...

It was a huge day for Paramount+, the new and revamped CBS All Access, which hit up the Television Critics Association with a wealth of big announcements.
We got series orders, series moving from other cable networks to call the streamer home, casting details, and so much more.
What is very clear about the announcements is that Paramount+ is going to be delving deeper into proven franchises with the aim of finding new hits with built-in audiences.
Disney+ has found much success with it, and we guess we should probably say the same about Discovery+, which has somehow managed to find even more success with the 90 Day Fiance franchise.
The new series pickups are Love Story, Fatal Attraction, Parallax View, Italian Job, and Flashdance.
The Hollywood Reporter first broke the exciting news in an interview with Paramount Television Studios President Nicole Clemens.

Fox has put in development G-Men, a multi-camera family comedy from writer Luke Cunningham (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), Austen Earl (Happy Together) and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written by Cunningham, G-Men follows two estranged brothers — who both claim to be government agents, even though one is a hardcore FBI agent and the other’s a part-time mailman — struggle to put their vast differences aside when they reunite to help their larger-than-life mother move on after the death of their father. They hate this new arrangement at first, but ultimately they realize that sometimes it’s the people you agree with the least who inspire you to be your best.

Cunningham was a writer on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and moved to The Tonight Show with Fallon as a writer for the first three seasons.

“Happy Together” creator Austen Earl and writer Luke Cunningham have set up a project at Fox.
The network has given a script commitment to “G-Men,” a multi-camera comedy from the pair that hails from 20th Century Fox TV and Fox Entertainment.
“G-Men” centers around two estranged brothers who both claim to be government agents despite the fact that one works for the FBI and the other is a part-time mailman. The duo struggle to put their differences aside when they reunite to help their “larger-than-life mother” move on after their father passes away. While at first they’re not best pleased with the new arrangement, they ultimately realize that sometimes it’s the people you agree with the least who inspire you to be your best.
Cunningham will pen and exec produce the project, while Earl serves as a non-writing executive producer.

Apple TV Plus this month moved off a project in which Richard Gere was set to play a Vietnam veteran whose life is upended when the woman he loved 50 years ago dies in a car crash. According to the logline for the shelved series, her death leads to his and another character’s “lifelong regrets and secrets” colliding with their “resentment of today’s self-absorbed millennials.” The duo then “go on a shooting spree.” The very next day, Netflix announced a series order for a Kevin James comedy in which the actor plays a Nascar crew chief who “finds himself at odds with tech reliant millennials” when they start working in his garage.
It’s perhaps unsurprising that Apple decided to move on from the Gere project, as a shooting spree partially motivated by hatred of millennials seems hardly in keeping with the tech giant’s general message. However, the...

When Liz Feldman walked into the pitch meeting that led to the creation of “Dead to Me,” Netflix’s new dark comedy series starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, she had nothing to contribute — or so she thought.
“I had just turned 40, and on my 40th birthday, very unexpectedly and sadly, my cousin passed away. He was not much older than me. So I was in a weird, dark place. I was, at that point, on my 5th or 6th year of trying to get pregnant, and I was on fertility hormones. I was grieving,” Feldman told TheWrap. “And here I am now at this pitch meeting, and they’re asking me if I have anything for two women, and I just — something just kind of popped into my brain,” she says.
Then came a “Eureka!” moment.
“I was like, ‘One of them is a widow, and she meets the...

Nowhere is it written that half-hour series have to be comedies, and yet “Dead To Me” seems adversely intent on sticking with tradition. Labeled a “dark comedy” by Netflix, the upcoming 10-episode first season is light on jokes and heavy on drama; even the darker elements in the twisty, flashback-driven mystery are treated as serious emotional turning points, rather than cringe-inducing punchlines. Only the pacing and occasional glib comment give the sense that humor is present, for “Dead To Me” provides no indication it has a sense of humor at all.
In today’s day and age, laugh-less half-hours are nothing new. Not only have series like “Girls” and “Transparent” stretched the definition of comedy, but more recent series like “Homecoming” and “Sorry to Bother You” have ditched the descriptor all-together. They’re not comedies. They’re dramas, only shorter.
But “Dead To Me” doesn’t work as a drama either.

This doesn’t qualify as breaking news, but the current glut of TV revivals we’re experiencing isn’t exactly fueled by creative necessity. As fun as it is to see some of these old casts yukking it up together again, let’s be real: Most of these revivals are solely designed to provide a short-term ratings fix for desperate broadcast networks — and quality is beside the point. CBS’ revival of Murphy Brown, which debuts this Thursday (9:30/8:30c), at least has a compelling hook to hang itself on: the election of President Trump and the war on the press he’s currently waging.

It was a moment that seemed strangely out of place. The Titanic was in its death throes when the maestro behind the mayhem turned to Eric Braeden and uttered a single word: "Never.” Eric felt the questioning look cross his own face as he turned to the voice. The confusion evident, the speaker, director James Cameron, explained: "The last line in Colossus." Eric smiled, struck by the fact that the director wasn’t referencing his, at that point, 17 (now 38) year run as Victor Newman on the TV soap The Young and the Restless, but, instead, his portrayal of Dr. Charles Forbin in a little sci-fi thriller from 1970 about a computer that takes over the world. At the same time, he was forced to reflect on his own bittersweet feelings regarding that film — Colossus: The Forbin Project — his first starring role in a Hollywood production. Exclusive: Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco has made a deal with Lionsgate to develop a multi-generational comedy he will cowrote as a starring vehicle. Maniscalco is teaming on the script with Austen Earl (The Great Indoors). It will be inspired by Maniscalco’s stage routines, which touch on his Italian American family. Joel McHale is unleashed. The comedian’s new Netflix series “The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale” looks a bit like his long-running E! series “The Soup,” thanks to the green screen, the guest stars, and The Staffer Formerly Known As Mankini. But the new show comes armed with a secret weapon in executive producer Paul Feig, and a mandate to expand the scope beyond entertainment.
“We wanted to broaden the show,” McHale recently told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “E! always wanted me to keep it to entertainment news or entertainment and no sports or anything like that, and don’t get too weird. This allows us to go all over the place.”

It’s a rallying cry familiar to fans of “Community”: “six seasons and a movie,” a promise that was only met halfway by the fates that guide the entertainment industry. But one reason for that lack of movie is that those who once starred on the NBC cult comedy have gone on to exciting and new projects showcasing their talents, from “Atlanta” (Donald Glover) to “Love” (Gillian Jacobs) to “Glow” (Alison Brie).
Even Joel McHale has moved on to something new — albeit relatively familiar — with “The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale,” the new Netflix series that owes a clear debt to E!’s long-running pop culture commentary series “The Soup” (which McHale hosted from 2004-2015).
