Sinister undertones made this film stand out

Sinister undertones made this film stand out for me at a recent screening. Despite the obvious technical issues, having clearly been made on a low budget, it still manages to captivate the audience and leaves us wanting more.

From the very start there is a sense of "unease" that grabs your attention and builds throughout the film unveiling the storyline as it goes.

The black and white filming helps to set the scene and is certainly reminiscent of the classics from the 40's and 50's, but dealing with much darker subject matter and with a certain modern twist.

It is great to see independent films like this being made and I really look forward to seeing what the team behind Z.A.F. produce next.

    Classic

Saw this first film from this director at a preview screening and looks like the start of some great things to come. Classic B&W suspense reminiscence of the 50's B movies but with more class. Clever story line with all the mad scientist and zombie like horror you need, all in 20 minutes. With a style all it's own, Fausti film pulls you through every dark corner of the mind and spits you out at the end. Playing the lead part himself with a band of amateur but very able extras, your left to sit on the edge of your seat and be drawn in.

Nice camera-work and the sound quality just adds to the film. Be keeping an eye out for more from this new talent.

    Dark with a modern twist

Being filmed in black and white with plenty to shadow filled long shots, lends a genuine atmosphere of suspense in the short film Z.A.F. which I was privileged to have a preview screening in early 2016.

It is a brilliantly constructed film where you get to glimpse into the mind of a medical subject who happens to be ex-military.

Although the budget is low key the acting of the main character and supporting actors pulls you deeper into the story as it unfolds.

The set, an old airfield base, also lends to the creepy atmosphere and intensifies the experience to the viewer.

With the different approach to the zombie genre, this short film by Fausti Films is definitely one you'll want to view more than once!

    An unsettling noir-horror

Having seen this unsettling film at a preview screening, it reminded me of a cross between The Walking Dead and A Matter of Life and Death. Director Fausti plays the sinister anti- Niven hero who enters a nightmare world of hallucinogenic trial drugs as hapless guinea pig. Behavioural engineering and its consequences are at the heart of the story and in some ways it echoes A Clockwork Orange. Given this was filmed on a home camera, its cinematography and production is superb for a low budget film. Sound quality inevitably suffers a bit, but the story and soundtrack more than make up for this. A strong debut from this new director.

    Artistic and clever

I have seen this film at a recent film festival.

Very artistic, cleverly written, filmed and directed by a clearly talented professional. The imagery adds to the suspense, filmed almost entirely in black and white on an old airfield.

The stereotypical medic, and the artistic timing of the cast adds to the suspense.

The low budget independence of this clever short film contributes to the uneasy viewing.

I look forward to following this progressive director as he develops his skills in this genre.

    • Trivia
One of the key filming locations used for principal photography was Panshanger Aerodrome in Hertfordshire, UK. The airfield was operational during World War II and the aircraft hangars and other buildings pictured in Z.A.F. date back to this period. As a result of a decision by the local authority in 2014 to build houses on the land, the airfield, which had remained in private use since the late 1950s, was closed and all buildings demolished. Z.A.F. was the last film to be made at the site.
