Walks Around Britain

I love this program! Andrew White is so good at making me feel like I'm on the walk with him. Living in the U.S. I doubt I'll ever get to take the walks Mr. White features but watching the program is the next best thing. He talks about the things that I notice on my walks here in the U.S., i.e., the birds, animals, people and plants that he meets along the way. The scenery is beautiful and he chooses places like the rivers and canals that I would not be able to access on my own. This is a thoroughly entertaining program covering two walks in each episode.

Andrew White succeeds here due to the down to earth and simplistic way he has approached the subject of" Walks Around Britain ". When watching the series I actually felt at times that I was on the walk with him. The information he gives is informative and interesting without going " over the top". He comes across as being " one of us", a person who enjoys being out and about in the countryside. We see him in normal walker's attire, not flaunting the latest hi-tech fashion items out there, and doesn't arrive to each walk in a flashy 4X4. It's about the walks and his narrative, not a fancy film crew. Although some will say it serves just a niche market, I think it serves it very well. Long may he continue bringing his walking suggestions to the general public n this manner.

I love walking the British countryside and when I can't get my boots on this is the best substitute. The series is a nice contrast to Julia Bradbury's programmes on ITV where she chooses the best known routes and has the budget to produce a programme which can be enjoyed by non-walkers. Andrew White clearly loves walking and lets the walk take prominence, the budget is low but that doesn't affect the enjoyment of the series.

Two walks to a 30 min programme works well and there is more information on the programme's website. The walks are not the 'usual suspects' so it's good to see parts of the country not featured on TV before, although I was left scratching my head when Mam Tor was featured in series 5. One of the best walks in the country was barely recognisable in poor visibility and several inches of snow!
