While Governor Al Smith was the first to sign the registry when this hotel opened in 1927 it was actually a black and white feral cat that was the first overnight guest. They staff named him DeWitt Clinton Jr. He left when he was kicked out of his 4th floor bedroom for a lowly basket on the reception floor.
