Cph:dox, one Europe’s leading documentary film festivals, has announced its full program, which includes no fewer than 84 world premieres out of more than 200 films being screened in the Danish capital and nationwide from March 13 through March 24.

This 21st edition, which aims to make documentary film accessible not only to a select industry few but to the public at large, will take off with a new nationwide approach, with mini festivals running simultaneously in nearly half of Denmark’s municipalities. In addition, alongside the six main awards, a new Audience Award is being revived by popular request, which comes with a €5,000 prize.

Running alongside the festival’s overarching theme of “Body Politics,” which explores questions about the body and our understanding of it, organizers have announced the other main theme of this edition: “Conflicted.”

Sundance winner ‘Minari’ leads acquisitions of festival hits.

Altitude Film Entertainment has acquired UK and Ireland distribution rights to three festival hits and plans to release them during the upcoming awards season.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari was acquired from A24. It won the grand jury and audience awards at Sundance, where the drama debuted earlier this year. Altitude hopes to release on April 2, 2021.

Steven Yeun, best known for roles in Bong Joon Ho’s Okja and The Walking Dead, stars in the story of a Korean-American family trying to build themselves a new life in small town Arkansas in the 1980s.

The Storyville commissioning team will report to BBC Film head Rose Garnett.

BBC documentary strand Storyville is moving under the remit of BBC Film, as part of a broader restructuring of the BBC’s filmmaking output.

Storyville commissioning editor Mandy Chang and assistant commissioner Hayley Reynolds will now report to BBC Film director Rose Garnett, effective immediately.

Chang and Jo Lapping will work in factual acquisitions across the BBC’s channels and iPlayer, while co-ordinator Hollie Gibson will work across both teams.

The news was announced in an email to staff from Clare Sillery, head of documentaries commissioning at the BBC.

This year’s Venice Gap-Financing Market, returning for its sixth edition in 2019, has named the 51 projects that will participate across its four strands.

There are 28 features, fiction and documentaries, heading to the Lido this year. Among them is Agnieszka Holland’s upcoming feature Charlatan (Sarlatan), which is being produced by Czech outfit Marlene Film in co-production with Film & Music Entertainment (F&me)’s Irish outpost and Slovakia’s Furia Film.

The project is based on the life of Jan Mikolášek, a Czech healer who lived in totalitarian 1950s Czechoslovakia. Films Boutique is handling sales.

On the 130th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin’s birth, the team behind the Showtime feature documentary about the movie icon has released the first image from the project, now titled “Chasing Chaplin.”

Altitude Film Sales is handling international rights and will be at Cannes to show the first footage to buyers. Showtime will premiere the film in the U.S., and Altitude will distribute in the U.K. and Ireland.

“Chasing Chaplin” comes from Peter Middleton and James Spinney, who are three-time BAFTA nominees for “Notes on Blindness.” It charts Chaplin’s life in his own words and those of the people closest to him, reflecting on his rags-to-riches story. Middleton and Spinney set out to make a personal portrayal of the artist and entertainer, who was, for part of the 20th century, the most famous man in the world.

Atlas V, one of Europe’s leading virtual reality studios, has partnered with the BBC and Arte to develop “Untold Story,” a Vr documentary series showcasing well-known directors exploring passion projects that never got made.

Directed by Clement Deneux (“Zombinladen”), the eight-part documentary will feature material created during pre-production, including storyboards, animatics, concept art, and original artwork. Footage of the featured directors will be shot with volumetric cameras and inserted into a Vr experience.

The directors, whose names will soon be unveiled, will narrate some key points of their respective projects, explain why the movie was important for them and why it never got made. Atlas V has enlisted high-profile casting agent Juliette Menager at Paris-based Joule Studio, who previously worked with Atlas V on their short “Alteration.”

James Marsh, the Oscar-winning director behind The Theory Of Everything and feature doc Man On Wire, has signed up to direct modern gothic horror The Loney for DNA Films and Film4.

Screen has learned that Marsh will direct from a screenplay by The Night Manager writer David Farr, who is adapting Andrew Michael Hurley’s novel of the same name.

I read so many books about him and his life and I love the Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin. Charlie Chaplin’s rags-to-riches story will be told in a new feature documentary for Showtime in the U.S. The project, backed by the British Film Institute and Film4, comes from Peter Middleton and James Spinney, who were BAFTA-nominated for their innovative doc “Notes on Blindness.” The pair were given access to a personal archive of the silent-movie star that includes previously unknown material and also have newly unearthed audio recordings.

“Chaplin” will look at the star’s impoverished childhood in late-Victorian London, his journey to the bright lights of Hollywood at the dawn of cinema, and, ultimately, his self-imposed exile.

Producer Lisa Marie Russo has been appointed by Doc Society (formerly Britdoc) to head up the newly-launched BFI Doc Society Fund.

The BFI selected Doc Society as the delivery partner for its £1m-per-year doc fund in December last year. The commitment, which runs through to 2022, is part of the BFI’s five-year strategy (BFI2022), which includes a promise to support the documentary medium and its emerging filmmakers.

The 28th edition of the documentary and factual content market and conference, running June 19-22 on the historic docks of the picturesque French port town of La Rochelle, is putting the onus on history this year.

New fund to back at least 12 documentaries per year.

The British Film Institute (BFI) is seeking a partner to help deliver its new BFI Documentary Fund.

The initiative, which will allocate £1m in National Lottery funding each year until March 2022, will enlist a partner to work closely with the BFI on delivering its key objectives.

The selected partner will be a UK-based organisation that has documentary expertise, but is not a production company (scroll down for full list of criteria).

Each year the fund will provide monetary awards to a minimum of 12 documentary projects by way of development, production or completion.

They will also provide pitch training to a minimum of 24 teams of filmmakers, with the goal being to help them develop their film pitches to help them secure funding (whether through BFI pots or not).

Ashton, who has recently served as acting head of film following the departure of Brek Taylor in January, becomes the outfit’s third head of film in the last 12 months.

Ashton’s executive producer credits at Creative England include Rachel Tunnard’s Bifa-winning feature debut Adult Life Skills, Justin Edgar’s upcoming feature The Marker and upcoming Jack Lowden-Martin McCann thriller Calibre.

Creative England has announced the latest recipients of its Production Fund, which supports filmmaking in the English regions using lottery funds via the BFI.

This year’s closing night event will be the world premiere of Jo Cox: Death Of An MP, a BBC2 documentary that focuses on the investigation of the politician’s murder, including contributions from eye witnesses, Cox’s family, and people who knew her attacker.

As previously announced, the festival will open with a screening of Daisy Asquith’s documentary Queerama, featuring a live Performance From John Grant.

This year’s Doc/Fest grand jury will include American Honey director Andrea Arnold, as well as Indian documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan and ex-Channel 4 news broadcaster Paul Mason.

Second edition of event for aspiring creatives reveals line-up.

Bafta has unveiled the line-up for the second edition of its Guru Live Festival, with speakers including Mad Max: Fury Road executive producer Iain Smith and 45 Years producer Tristan Goligher.

The two-day event will take place at Bafta’s Piccadilly venue in London between May 6-7 and Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts on May 6, featuring creatives from the worls of film, TV and gaming.

Iain Smith, whose credits also include Children of Men. will speak at the Glasgow event, while Tristan Goligher, also the producer of Weekend and the upcoming Lean On Pete, will appear in London.

Last step before the Oscars! The top actors, directors, writers, and producers from all over the world gathered in London on Sunday night for the 2017 British Academy of Film and Television Awards.

In addition to Hollywood royalty, British Royals Kate Middleton and Prince William also attended the annual awards show, posing for pictures and presenting the Academy Fellowship during the ceremony.

“La La Land” was the big winner at the BAFTA Awards, with Best Picture, Director (Damien Chazelle) and Actress (Emma Stone) among the musical’s five awards. “Manchester by the Sea” claimed both Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan, who also directed), meanwhile, with the other acting prizes taken home by Dev Patel (“Lion”) and Viola Davis (“Fences”). La La Land was the big winner at the 2017 Baftas, winning five prizes, including best film, best director (Damien Chazelle) and best actress (Emma Stone).

Exclusive: Brek Taylor departs in latest blow to UK funding agency.

Creative England’s head of film Brek Taylor is to leave the UK funding agency this week after four months in the role.

The former director and Film London executive was appointed at the end of September 2016 following the departure of Caroline Cooper Charles, who herself served only six months in the position.

Creative England confirmed the exit but declined to comment on the reason for Taylor’s departure or a succession plan.

The 45 Years and Notes On Blindness backer had been looking to build stability in 2017 following cuts to its film operation last year.

On revealing its five-year plan for film in November, the BFI described a “refocused” role for the agency and a review of its production services operation.

Goteborg Film Festival has announced its programme of nearly 450 films from 84 countries to screen during the festival’s 40th anniversary edition (Jan 27-Feb 6).

As reported earlier, the festival will kick off with Dome Karukoski’s Tom Of Finland.

With the Golden Globes out of the way, and the Oscar noms coming up, it's time for the Brits to reveal their favorites. The nominations for the 70th Annual BAFTA Awards (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) were announced today. The top film is La La Land, with a grand total of 11 nominations, followed by Arrival and Nocturnal Animals scoring nine nominations each. The BAFTAs have a large set of categories similar to the Oscars, and they always feature some very unique picks among the nominees. The BAFTAs are the British equivalent of the Oscars, and although the awards are given overseas, they still factor into the American awards race.

Yet again, we see the same three films having a strong presence here: La La Land, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. However, BAFTA is also spreading the love to other awards favourites like Arrival, Nocturnal Animals, and Lion.

Some interesting omissions here include Denzel Washington for Fences. His co-star Viola Davis is nominated in the supporting category, but it looks as though BAFTA went for other potential Oscar contenders Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic. They're also the first major awards body to nominate Jake Gyllenhaal's leading performance in Nocturnal Animals.

One day after setting a record for most wins at the Golden Globes, La La Land continued its fine awards season by claiming 11 Bafta nominations, the joint-most since The Artist scored 12 nominations five years ago.

As predicted, Damien Chazelle’s throwback musical-romance scored nominations in most leading categories including best film, director, actor, actress, original screenplay and cinematography.

Lionsgate will now make the feel-good musical its widest ever UK release this weekend (603 screens), pushing it out on more screens than its flagship franchise The Hunger Games.

Entertainment One (eOne), the UK’s leading indie at the box office in 2016, has topped the list of distributors nominated for Bafta film awards this year with 20 nods, a company record.

Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival was the company’s top title, securing nine nominations, the joint second-highest for an individual film.

Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake received five nominations, while Pablo Larrain’s Jackie received three. Further eOne titles to secure nods included Captain Fantastic, Denial, and The Girl On The Train.

Impressively, Lionsgate secured a record 18 nominations, including 11 for red hot favourite La La Land, the highest individual total on the day.
