Brek Taylor has directed and produced for over fifteen years in theatre, television and film. She has worked for the BBC, C4, National Geographic and European Capital of Culture and now works as a freelance film director and creative producer.
Brek originally trained as a ballet dancer before moving into production. Career highlights so far include: writing, directing and producing her first play at 19 and taking it to the Edinburgh Festival, online editing 65 x1 hour documentaries for National Geographic's "Explorer's Journal", working with 34 countries to deliver a 24 hour international Shakespeare theatre event and premiering her first feature film, the critically acclaimed "Island" at the Glasgow International Film Festival.
In 2015 she Creatively Produced the ambitious and highly innovative Britvic J2O Campaign for TH_NK Agency working with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and spoken word artist James Massiah to create 20 new pieces of collaborative work and digital marketing films.
She continues to develop features, including the brilliant retro rom-com called "My Moscow Miseducation" to shoot in 2016 with development funding from the BFI and produced by Rooks Nest Entertainment. Whilst developing other projects with writers including Lou Gerring and Julie Mayhew.
Brek's feature film experience started in the S16mm cutting room of veteran film director Tony Palmer on the "Kindness of Strangers" and has included development and production work at Outpost/@Radical Media, including"Brothers Grimm" and "The Infidel".
Since then Brek has regularly collaborated with film-makers Clare Tinsley and Elizabeth Mitchell to direct imaginative and compelling productions such as the live action and puppetry love story "Ruth's Tooth" with Jim Henson's Creature Workshop and the Film London-funded "Dead Bird" with sound designer Scanner. Other important collaborations have included "Recruitment Stars" and "The 3 Turn" with comedy writer Julie Mayhew for the Gilded Balloon and Red Lion Theatre and "Tree of Light" with aboriculturist Luke Tamblyn for the Cultural Olympiad in 2012.
Passionate to pass on what she has learnt through her production and directing experience, Brek lectures at Greenwich University on practical film-making and was a production executive for "London Calling" with Film London and the BFI to support outstanding short film-making talent. She ran the North London scheme for the last seven years, devising and delivering training and produced over 35 short films.
