Image
Prime Video’s “Bosch” spinoff series is here, and you’ll probably recognize quite a few faces in “Ballard.” But, if you’re struggling to place them, we can help you out.

Now streaming, and based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels, “Ballard” centers on Detective Renee Ballard, the fearless new leader of LAPD’s cold case unit. The thing about this unit is, it’s made up entirely of volunteers, and has no money being funneled into it to help.

Still, those volunteers are pretty good. Here’s who you’ll recognize among them.

Maggie Q in “Ballard.” (Greg Gayne/Prime Video) Reneé Ballard (Maggie Q)

Reneé Ballard leads the LAPD’s new cold case division, and is the protagonist of our story. She’s played by Maggie Q, who you might recognize from the “Divergent” franchise, “Designated Survivor” and more.

20 years of YouTube: In 2015, Casey Neistat revolutionized the vlog without removing his shades
Image
In February 2025, YouTube turned 20. The video site has gone through a lot over the past two decades, including an acquisition, an earnings glow-up, and multiple generations of star creators. In our 20 Years of YouTube series, we’ll examine the uploads, trends, and influencers that have defined the world’s favorite video site — one year at a time. Click here for a full archive of the series.

We are now halfway through this project, equidistant from YouTube’s inception and the current year. And in many ways, 2015 was the inflection point that separated the creator community’s past from its present.

As PewDiePie brought viewership and subscriber numbers to unprecedented heights, channels like DisneyCollectorBR signaled a shift to nameless, faceless content that is still occurring today. In 2015, multi-channel networks were starting to merge with the media corporations that acquired them, the number of active creators was skyrocketing, and a humble lip-sync app called musical.

Why Black Mirror Avoided Casting Comedians In The Early Seasons
Image
The Netflix era of "Black Mirror" constantly makes headlines for its star-studded cast. The biggest celebrity cameo in an episode was probably Miley Cyrus' semi-meta role in season 5, but perhaps the most surprising celebrities to show up were the ones best known for being funny. Season 7 featured Rashida Jones of "Parks and Recreation" fame, Chris O'Dowd from "The It Crowd," Cristin Milioti from "How I Met Your Mother," Awkwafina from "Nora From Queens," Issa Rae from "Insecure," and so on. A show that's known for being bleak and serious is now routinely being led by actors known for their sitcom shenanigans.

It's a big shift from the early Channel 4 seasons of "Black Mirror," where the lead actors were always best known for their previous dramatic roles. Some of this change is the natural result of "Black Mirror" becoming a hit show with near limitless casting options, but part of it's...

4 best TV shows coming to Netflix (and 2 shows leaving) in July 2025
Image
We're almost halfway through 2025, and it's been a great year for Netflix shows so far. New shows like Running Point, Ransom Canyon, and The Waterfront have become new fan-favorites, while the likes of Ginny & Georgia and Squid Game have returned with their latest seasons. There's still so much to look forward to this year, with Wednesday, Stranger Things, and more still set to premiere.

Beyond the Netflix original series we can't stop binge-watching, the streamer has also been steadily adding small-screen hits throughout the year that have been getting a second life. Younger became a hit on Netflix earlier this year, while shows like Animal Kingdom, Blindspot, and The Royals have recently begun streaming and striking a cord as audiences rediscover past favorites.

In July 2025, there are even more great TV shows becoming available to stream on Netflix, perhaps the biggest drop of the year so far. Time-tested television titles like the CBS sitcom Mom,...

What's Leaving Netflix in July 2025: Movies and Shows
Image
July is here, and the weather is heating up. With summer now in full swing, you might follow in Ken’s footsteps and make “beach” your full-time job. But everyone needs a break from work once in a while — even if that job is lounging on a towel with your toes in the sand. When it’s extra-hot outside, the best way to cool off is in air conditioning with a good movie or show.

Grab your favorite travel buddies, pack your bags, and take a trip to Barbie Land before the 2023 hit Barbie leaves town this month. Then follow up with “President Barbie,” Issa Rae, as she navigates life transitions and romantic pursuits with her besties in all five seasons of Insecure. If you’re curious to revisit your awkward teen years, set your clock back — or forward? — 13 years with the feel-good romantic comedy 13 Going on...

Netflix to lose titles licensed from Disney, Wbd in July
Image
Shows like ‘Band of Brothers,’ ‘Home Improvement,’ ‘Insecure,’ and others will be leaving Netflix starting next month.

Content licensing can be a fickle feature of streaming services. It can be a great thing when it allows subscribers of a service like Netflix to watch shows and movies that are typically only found on other streaming services, but all good things must come to an end. Netflix customers are going to have to learn that lesson the hard way starting in July, when titles licensed from Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery will begin leaving the service.

Key Details: Get ‘em while you can: Removals of Disney and Wbd-owned shows will begin on July 1. Popular picks: Titles like “Home Improvement,” “Sex and the City,” and others will be departing. Not just Disney and Wbd: Titles licensed from AMC will start to leave Netflix in August. Sign Up $9.99+ / month max via prime video...

How Music Supervisor Kier Lehman Made ‘Forever’ Soundtrack A Love Letter to L.A.
Image
The Netflix series “Forever” succeeds at conveying the powerful emotions of first love. Coupled with Justin and Keisha’s contrasting lifestyles and family dynamics, the teen love affair allowed audiences to “see themselves,” says music supervisor Kier Lehman, reflecting on the overwhelmingly positive reactions to Season 1.

“Young people can see themselves in it and connect with their own Justin and Keisha experiences as kids in their relationships and home life,” he told Variety. “These lifestyles, found in two different types of families, offer an experience that people can relate to or aspire to. Feeling that connection that draws them further into the story.”

The same gravitational pull could be said of Lehman’s contributions to curating the soundtrack for the season. His music selection highlights include featuring Daniel Caesar’s “Blessed” during a heartwarming reunion between Justin and Keisha at Martha’s Vineyard, which he recalled was an “emotional climax...

During Lionsgate’s Q4 2025 earnings call, CEO Jon Feltheimer shared an update on the film starring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, who makes his screen debut in the project.

How Natasha Rothwell helped Belinda get her groove back in ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3
Image
Most fans of The White Lotus believe we’ll see Natasha Rothwell’s Belinda again. But if the character’s Season 3 exit sailing off into the Thai sunset with her son, Zion (Nicholas Duvernay), $5 million richer is the last we see of the spa manager, it’s a well-deserved happy ending for both the fan favorite and the actress who plays her.

Rothwell earned an Emmy nomination for the HBO series' first season, which ended with the death of Hawaii-based Belinda’s dream to open her own spa after investor Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) pulled out. Rothwell watched Sicily-set Season 2 as a fan, and knew that Tanya had died trying to escape a hit orchestrated by her husband, Greg (Jon Gries). Omigod You Guys! New ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Set Images Show Lexi Minetree as ‘Elle’
Image
The new Elle Woods is out and about in new set images from the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. Lexi Minetree, who was handpicked by original star Reese Witherspoon to portray the younger version of the character, is clad head-to-toe in pink in the new images, which come via Backgrid. The prequel series, Elle, is set to stream on Prime Video. The images portray the high-school-aged Woods on a shopping trip with a group of friends, all wearing distinctly 1990s fashions. That's in keeping with the series' timeframe, which will depict the high school years of Woods before the events of the 2001 movie, which saw her head off to law school and prove to be surprisingly adept at jurisprudence.

The film subsequently spawned one theatrical sequel, a failed TV pilot, and a Broadway musical. The role launched Witherspoon to superstardom, and remains one of her most iconic roles. In the images,...

The Sexiest Television Comedies of All Time
Image
In the wake of The White Lotus and Dying for Sex, two television shows drenched in the pheromones of lust, The Hollywood Reporter decided to rank the 20 sexiest TV shows this week. Where, you might wonder, do comedies rank on the list? Not surprisingly, the list is dominated by streaming dramas where the latitude for nudity and general horniness is a little wider. A few comedy shows did make the list, however, as you’ll read below.

Before we get into the Hollywood Reporter’s rankings, though, consider a few other sitcoms that might have qualified for the list…

Dream On

The whole point of HBO’s Dream On was to take advantage of the pay cable network’s willingness to show naked people running around the bedroom. Imagine a sitcom in which someone’s dress falls off every week and you get the idea.

Bob’s Burgers

Not sure what...

Keke Palmer is a huge draw, and her latest project proves that. Early this year, she released her buddy comedy One of Them Days, which was a major critical and commercial hit.

The buddy comedy marked hip-hop star Sza's acting debut, and the two of them did magic together. Following a very successful theatrical run at the beginning of the year, the movie is now a hit on Netflix as well, Tudum reports.

One of Them Days premiered on Netflix on Apr. 2 and for the week between Mar. 31 to Apr. 6, the movie amassed 7.7 million views and 12.4 million hours viewed. It was enough to send it straight to charts, and it debuted in second place before the previous week's chart-topper The Life List, which added 29.2 million more views after its initial 24.4 million views.

The numbers are even more impressive when one realizes that One of Them Days is only available to stream on Netflix U.

Michael Jackson Biopic Likely Splitting into Two Movies and Delaying Release Date
Image
Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” may be split into two movies. As a result, the Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International project will likely push its current Oct. 3 release date.

While “Michael” was a major part of last year’s Lionsgate CinemaCon presentation, no footage from the project was shown during this year’s outing. The film, produced by “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” Graham King, wrapped principal photography in May 2024, but John Logan’s script is in the process of being revised in advance of reshoots.

“Michael,” which carries a roughly $155 million budget, stars Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, who makes his screen debut in the film. Colman Domingo and Nia Long will play family heads Joe and Katherine Jackson, while Miles Teller will play Jackson’s attorney and advisor John Branca. Larenz Tate will star as Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, while Laura Harrier will play portray pioneering...

Rob McElhenney’s ‘Mythic Quest’ Spin-off ‘Side Quest’ Proves Once and For All That Too Many Things Have Been Franchised
Image
I’m not the first to note that entertainment studios’ terror of gambling and losing on original stories has made it so that nearly every project that makes it in front of our eyes — including literally all 10 of last year’s biggest movies — belongs to a franchise. We all know the big ones, but this goes beyond the MCU, the Dceu, Star Wars, Star Trek and the Disney princesses: We’re now living in a world where The Big Bang Theory is about to launch its third spin-off. Even shows on AppleTV+ — a platform that, famously, no one watches, and that we just learned is losing its parent company more than $1 billion a year — are becoming franchises: as Mythic Quest spins off the anthology show Side Quest, I think we can officially say franchise fever has gone too far.

Since it’s extremely likely that this is the first time you’re hearing about it,...

‘Elle’ will take everyone's favorite blonde back to high school
Image
Get ready for more pink, more confidence, and a whole new side of Elle Woods on Prime Video.

I only saw “Legally Blonde” for the first time about four years ago, when my wife insisted we watch it together - it’s one of her all-time favorites. And yeah, even if some people call it a “girl’s movie” – I loved it. Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods is funny, smart, and endlessly charming, making it impossible not to root for her.

Now, Prime Video is taking us back to where it all started with “Elle,” a prequel series that explores Elle’s high school years and the experiences that shaped her into the pink-clad powerhouse we know and love. With Laura Kittrell (“Insecure”) as showrunner and Witherspoon producing, “Elle” is shaping up to be a must-watch for longtime fans and anyone who wants some high school nostalgia. Here’s everything...
