I advise you to go into this superb French haunted-house story knowing as little about it as possible. Unfortunately I have to say something about it to hit the IMDB word count. So, Lisa is a somewhat lost young French woman who's dealing with some past trauma. She sleeps on a mattress on the floor in her almost-empty flat, and has an imaginary husband. One day she inherits a house from someone she's never met. It isn't long before she discovers something strange behind the walls...
This series is atmospheric, bleak and bitter-sweet, but ultimately redemptive, with some genuinely slow-burn scary moments (no cheap jump-scares here). Well worth your time.
Loved this series...scary, and romantic love story. I watched all 3 episodes in one night. The ending was unexpected, emotional, heartfelt. I cried! You will love this show.

I ran across the ending of the first of the 3 parts in this mini-series on Shudder. It was intense and very creepy. Then I went back and watched all 3 episodes one after another.
The first 30 minutes or so really just set up the story - let you get to know Lisa, the main character, and her personality. This is important as the entire story plays out. I was quite moved at the ending; not what I expected, but quite amazing.
This is highly recommended. If it was available in the US on DVD or Blu-Ray I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but it's not so I think Shudder is the only way to see it. Shudder is available on iTunes and Amazon.

Au-delà des murs is a fantastic thriller that I came across on the French Arte channel. It is about the mysterious adventure of a woman who inherits an old house across the street from a man died 30 years ago. She cracks through a wall in the mystic house and finds herself in a fantasy-dream world.
The suspense and tension is maintained all throughout the movie. The main elements of a thriller is very cleverly used by the director such as the sombreness, foggy forest, zombies and some symbolic elements representing life and death. The acting is generally very successful, such as that of the main character Lisa, the little girl Sophie and the old lady Rose. I would like to congratulate the makers and actors of this film. I strongly recommend it to everyone.
Life is so bad for Lisa, she pretends to be married- even wears a fake wedding band. She lives in a small apartment and presses through life with what appears to be a dark future. Until she inherits a house from a man she's never known and has no familial connection. This is the introduction to Au Delà des Murs translated to Beyond the Walls.

This is a French mini-series, broken into three parts. It's part drama, horror and mystery, sharing a woman's life after dealing with a lifetime of guilt and depression. The story is dark and slightly depressing, but that quickly changed as you watch her discover the house is more than it appears.
This series is fascinating, sharing a horror that's more of an emotional haunt. You find yourself pulled in to the sense of loss and curiosity. After a while, if you're like me, you may even figure out what's going to happen, but that's okay. You will still watch, just to be sure.
Beyond the Walls is nicely written and probably would have just as good as a movie, but I don't know much about how the French do things. I do know that this show is beautiful and once you see the ending, you'll be like, "Awww... " in a good way.
