The Beyond the Gates premiere is a little over a month away, and the hype is starting to build steam. Over the weekend, CBS Sunday Morning featured a segment focusing on the upcoming CBS soap opera. Thanks to correspondent Nancy Giles, we saw the cast, heard from the show’s executive producers, Sheila Ducksworth and Michele Val Jean, and learned a little more about this groundbreaking daytime drama.

What We Learned Executive Producer Sheila Ducksworth, who is also the president of this CBS/NAACP production, teased what viewers will get to see. She hinted at “plenty of love triangles, plenty of people you love, love to hate” and added that “it’s really juicy.” When Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree) and Clifton Davis (Vernon Dupree) give Giles the set tour, they take the correspondent to Orphey Gene’s, the diner that’s the gathering place “for everybody in every economic bracket in the show” goes to.

Exclusive: Outer Banks actress Carlacia Grant has signed with Anonymous Content for representation in all areas.

Grant recently reprised her breakout role as Cleo in Season 4 of Netflix’s Outer Banks, which debuted on October 10. She stars alongside Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, and Charles Esten.

Prior to that role, Grant also had a recurring role in the Oprah Winfrey Network’s drama series Greenleaf, opposite Keith David, Lynn Whitfield, and Merle Dandridge. Her other television credits include her debut role in the History Channel’s remake of Roots, as well as a recurring role on NBC’s Game of Silence.

Grant, a Haitian-Jamaican-American actress who found her passion for the craft at a young age, currently resides in Los Angeles.

She continues to be represented by TalentWorks, Tmp Artists, imPRint,and Johnson, Shapiro, Slewett and Kole.

It’s September 2024, and Beyond the Gates is becoming increasingly real. The title transitioned from The Gates to Beyond the Gates. Three members of the cast were announced, two of whom Soap Hub placed on its Dream Casting Wish List for the first new soap created in 25 years. And Karla Mosley — who will play Dani Dupree on the one-hour CBS soap — posted from Atlanta and is excited about being a part of this journey.

CBS originally announced its plans to create the first soap opera in 25 years back in April. And there’s more news to come as the highly anticipated production builds up steam to its premiere in early 2025.

The Dream Casting List: The Actors

If you recall, we already dream-cast a list of the female actors we’d love to see when populating the residents of Btg. Many great male actors are out there whose impact would instantly be felt.

Renée Elise Goldsberry and Lynn Whitfield are forced to put their differences aside during a pivotal road trip in the trailer for the drama feature Albany Road.

The film from writer-director Christine Swanson is set to hit select AMC Theatres and Malco Theatres locations on Nov. 15, with those cinema chains handling the distribution. Albany Road centers on Celeste (Goldsberry), who is preparing for an important work trip and is dismayed that she has to share a car with her ex-fiancé’s mother, Paula (Whitfield). Celeste soon learns that Paula is keeping a big secret from her, with the movie exploring challenging family dynamics and the power of personal growth.

“We come face-to-face with what we fear the most or what we want the most, and sometimes you win — and sometimes you lose,” Whitfield says in the trailer.

Later, while seated in the car next to Whitfield, Goldsberry exclaims, “I hate being powerless!

Whitfield’s character, Alicia, likely will be on the hunt for vengeance when the Paramount+ With Showtime series returns: Her son, Rob (played by Iman Shumpert), was killed in the Season 6 finale by Nuck (Cortez Smith). Nuck also killed the finale’s other huge casualty, Otis “Douda” Perry (Curtiss Cook).

The second season of the What Are We Talking About? podcast will launch with a conversation starter: The first joint interview with veteran Hollywood actors Keith David and David Keith who, for an obvious reason, are often confused for one another.

The podcast — hosted by entertainment industry insiders Paul Davidson (former film and TV boss at The Orchard), Benjamin Raab (Quantum Leap co-executive producer), and entertainment executive Mitch Graham — dropped a trailer today announcing the surprise interview. The full podcast episode will be available on Aug. 26.

What Are We Talking About? finds the hosts engaging in free-wheeling conversations about everything from films and TV shows to bro-hugs and skin care regimens. During an episode last season, the trio touched on the films of filmmaker John Carpenter, a chat that led them to connect the dots between David (star of Carpenter flicks like 1982’s The Thing and 1988’s They Live) and Keith.

“Citadel” Season 2 at Amazon Prime Video has added a trio of recurring cast members.

Variety has learned exclusively that Merle Dandridge, Rahul Kohli, and Michael Trucco will all appear in the new season of the spy thriller series. They will appear opposite returning stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and returning cast member Stanley Tucci. Recently announced new cast members for the second season include Jack Reynor, Matt Berry, and Gabriel Leone.

Actor Bill Cobbs, who amassed dozens of acting roles over the course of his career, has passed away. He was 90 years old.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Cobbs died of natural causes on Tuesday. His passing was confirmed by his publicist, Chuck I. Jones, who referred to the Night at the Museum star as "just a phenomenal human being." Jones further described the late actor as a "very genuine, kind, and concerned person who was always looking to help others."

Cobbs was born on June 16, 1934. After serving in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, Cobbs relocated to New York with hopes of launching an acting career in 1970. After getting his start with theater productions, the actor went on to make his feature film debut in 1974's The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. Bill Cobbs, an actor who worked so steadily over decades that he was immediately recognizable to most TV- and movie viewers, died Tuesday at his home in California. He was 90.

Cobbs’ family announced the death on Facebook. “We are saddened to share the passing of Bill Cobbs. On Tuesday, June 25, Bill passed away peacefully at his home in California,” the post reads. “A beloved partner, big brother, uncle, surrogate parent, godfather and friend, Bill recently and happily celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by cherished loved ones. As a family we are comforted knowing Bill has found peace and eternal rest with his Heavenly Father.

Jacob Romero starred in the TV series Greenleaf, which aired from 2019 to 2020. He played the role of Aj Delajae in 15 episodes of the series. However, he did not gain prominence as an actor until he starred as the braggart marksman, Usopp.

Sterlin Harjo’s FX drama pilot starring Ethan Hawke has set its main cast, Variety has learned.

The new cast members are: Keith David, Siena East (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”), Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Shepherd, Tracy Letts, Kyle Maclachlan, and Macon Blair.

The pilot, which was ordered in February, is titled “The Sensitive Kind.” Exact plot details are being kept under wraps aside from the fact it is described as a “Tulsa noir about a guy (Hawke) who knows too much.” Further character details for the new cast members are also being kept under wraps.

Harjo created the project and will also serve as director and executive producer. Hawke will executive produce in addition to starring, with Garret Basch also executive producing. FX Studios, where Harjo is under an overall deal, will produce.

Mara Brock Akil’s Netflix series adaptation of the 1975 Judy Blume novel “Forever” has found its two series leads, Variety has learned.

Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. are set to star in the series, which was originally ordered at Netflix back in 2022. In addition, Regina King has boarded the series as an executive producer and will direct the first episode.

The official logline states the series is “an epic love story of two Black teens exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts, set in Los Angeles, 2018.”

Simone will star as as Keisha Clark, described as “a young confident, smart, and fiery track star with clear dreams for life after high school.” Cooper will play Justin Edwards, “a young man who is a nerd at heart disguised in an athlete’s body. Justin dreams of playing D1 basketball and achieving more than his successful parents.

Anna Diop has signed on to star opposite Corey Hawkins and Willem Dafoe in “The Man in My Basement,” directed by Nadia Latif.

The film is an adaptation of Walter Mosley’s bestselling psychological thriller, and Diop’s casting sets an onscreen reunion with Hawkins, her co-star in the 2017 series “24: Legacy.”

Hawkins stars in the movie as Charles Blakey, a man living in the African American neighborhood of Sag Harbor, who is “out of work, out of luck and on the verge of foreclosure on his ancestral home.”

Exclusive: Here’s your first look at So Fly Christmas, the upcoming BET+ holiday movie starring Tichina Arnold, Tami Roman, Robert Christopher Riley, and newcomer Laurissa Romain.

Written by Clarence Williams IV and directed by Terri Vaughn, the movie is currently set to debut on BET+ on November 23.

Synopsis reads: After being stood up at the altar on Christmas Eve, Wyvetta (Tichina Arnold) loses her love on her favorite holiday. To show solidarity, Wyvetta’s best friend, Dione (Tami Roman), suggests that the two of them renounce love. Things become complicated when Dione falls for a mild-mannered record store owner (Robert Christopher Riley) and tries to keep it under wraps.

Netflix’s “One Piece” has a colorful, vibrant cast filled newcomers like Iñaki Godoy, who plays as Monkey D. Luffy, and some more seasoned actors like Vincent Regan, who plays Vice Admiral Garp. Netflix put in the work (seven years to be exact) to craft its live adaption of the bestselling manga series.

The voice of Hordak in Kevin Smith's Masters of the Universe: Revolution was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con.

Deadline reports that at Sdcc, Smith revealed during a panel that Keith David has been cast as the voice of Hordak in the animated Netflix series. In the previous season of the Masters of the Universe sequel series, dubbed Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Hordak was briefly shown, though the character's voice wasn't yet revealed. With his casting, David joins Meg Foster, who previously starred as Evil-Lyn in the live-action Masters of the Universe film in 1987; she voices Motherboard in the new series. Other confirmed voice cast members include Mark Hamill as Skeletor, Chris Wood as He-Man, Melissa Benoist as Teela, and William Shatner in a mystery role.

John Carpenter's 1982 remake of "The Thing" is, like many of Carpenter's movies, possessed of a nihilistic streak. The titular Thing is a living mass of alien tissues, existing without form, able to invade a host, consume it, and replicate it down to its very brain functions. It can look and sound like anyone. The Thing doesn't appear to be intelligent and lives only to consume and perpetuate itself. Carpenter's film is set at a remote Antarctic outpost populated by bored, surly, mostly bearded men, tired of their isolated job and only barely staving off mind-crushing boredom. When the Thing infiltrates their ranks, paranoia immediately takes over, and the characters all begin suspecting one another. Only the stalwart pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell) holds it together enough to seek out the creature in a logical fashion.

The project hails from writer and executive producer Wayne Conley. “JumpStart” is set in Philadelphia. Per the official logline, the show “follows Joe, a cop, his wife Marcy, a nurse, and Joe’s partner, Crunchy. Joe and Marcy are young, hip, urban parents with old school values who are willing to sacrifice for their kids and have some laughs while doing it.” The comic strip originally entered syndication in 1989.

A TV version of the comic has been in the works since at least 2014, when Kapital announced plans to develop a live-action version with 20th Century Fox.

Emmy winner Colman Domingo will star in Netflix’s upcoming limited conspiracy thriller “The Madness,” which has just received a series order under Chernin Entertainment’s (The North Road Company) first-look deal at the streamer.

In the eight-episode drama, media pundit Muncie Daniels (Domingo) must fight for his innocence and livelihood after he stumbles upon a murder deep in the Poconos woods. As the walls close in, Muncie strives to reconnect with his estranged family — and his lost ideals — in order to survive.

The project hails from co-showrunners VJ Boyd and Stephen Belber, who also serves as creator. The duo will also executive produce alongside Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kaitlin Dahill. As previously reported, Clément Virgo (“Greenleaf”) will direct and executive produce the first two and concluding two episodes. Quyen Tran (“Maid”) and Jessica Lowrey (“Perry Mason”) will each direct two middle episodes.

HBO’s highly-anticipated television adaptation of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed video game “The Last of Us” is set to premiere on Sunday evening, and while the live-action version finds different performers filling the roles of the game’s characters, Merle Dandridge was tasked with reprising her role as Marlene in live-action form. The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The Prime Video series Riches is about the ways in which family, money, and dynasty intertwine with one another. In particular, it shows how money can drive a family apart, and many viewers will no doubt take pleasure in its soapy aesthetic and storylines.

Indeed, this seems to be something of a golden age for series focusing on business empires and the ways that ego can often get in the way of the business of making money. What’s more, many similar series also examine the fraught dynamics that exist within powerful and influential families.

Chicago – Starfire from the TV series “Titans” has heroically taken on another persona. Actor Anna Diop breaks out as the title character in “Nanny,” an Amazon Studios film getting a limited release in theaters on November 23rd, before streaming on the Prime Video platform beginning on December 16th.

“Nanny” is a multi-layered and engrossing story about a caregiver in New York City named Aisha (Anna Diop), who works for an upscale couple looking after their child. She is originally from the African country of Senegal, and had to leave her young son behind to establish a new life in America. Written and directed by Nikyatu Jusu, this film won the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for its incisive view of class structures and immigrant experiences in America, and the ramifications of decisions that are calculated into a survival instinct.

ABC’s Wonder Years reboot is adding a certified diva to its ranks: Patti Labelle is joining the cast in Season 2 to play the mother of Dulé Hill’s character Bill, TVLine has learned.

Labelle will guest-star in a two-episode arc as Shirley Williams, who is also the church choir director. “‘Mother Williams’ is as sweet as she can be but has another side to her when choir members don’t quite hit the right notes,” according to the official description.

Patti Labelle will guest-star in the ABC comedy’s second season, playing Bill Williams’ (Dulé Hill) mother. She’s currently signed on for two episodes.

Her character, Shirley Williams, is the choir director at her church. “Mother Williams” is as sweet as she can be but has another side to her when choir members don’t quite hit the right notes.

Season two of The Wonder Years will continue to follow the coming of age of Dean Williams (Elisha “Ej” Williams) in Montgomery, Alabama, in the late 1960s. The series, due to premiere at midseason, won a Peabody Award for its first season, and showrunner Saladin K. Patterson was nominated for a Writers Guild Award for his pilot script.

Original “High School Musical” franchise cast members Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh have joined season four of the Disney+ series “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” the streamer announced as production begins on the new season.

The new season will take a meta turn, with the Principal Gutierrez character announcing that Disney has decided to make the long-awaited “High School Musical 4: The Reunion” movie on location at their in-show high school. Bleu, Coleman, Grabeel, Johnson, Reed and Kaycee Stroh will play themselves, resurrecting their “High School Musical” roles within the show, while the students will play featured extras in the in-universe movie.

At a time when Canadian film is under fire for its lack of diversity, Clement Virgo has always been a step ahead.

Having arrived in Canada from his native Jamaica at age 11, Virgo in 1995 screened his feature directorial debut, Rude, about three characters struggling for inner city redemption in 1990s Toronto, at Cannes and the Toronto Film Festival.

Now, 27 years later, Virgo is back at TIFF with Brother, a mystery drama with three intertwining timelines about Francis and Michael, sons of Caribbean immigrants who grow up on an embattled Toronto housing complex during a summer of police violence and dashed dreams in 1991.

Based on David Chariandy’s novel Brother, Virgo explores themes of Black masculinity, family, loyalty and love through the eyes of two brothers: Michael, played by Lamar Johnson, and U.K. actor Aaron Pierre in the role of older brother and protector Francis.

Roku is set to release a live capture of the West End stage show “Heathers: The Musical” as a Roku Original special on the Roku Channel. The special will be available to stream in the U.S. on Friday, Sept. 16.
