Cineverse Lands North American Rights for ‘Terrifier 3’; Coming to Theaters, Screambox in 2024
Image
Good things come in threes for horror fans. Cineverse announced on Monday that it is sending in the clown once more and has acquired the North American rights to “Terrifier 3,” the highly anticipated threequel in the virally popular “Terrifier” franchise.

7-Day Free Trial $0+ / month via amazon.com

Creator/writer/director Damien Leone and producer Phil Falcone are back for the third installment of the indie slasher series, which features the sadistic monochrome murderer Art the Clown (played by David Howard Thornton), who was originally created for a pair of shorts and made his feature-length debut in Leone’s 2013 hit “All Hallows' Eve.” The third film is expected to be a continuation of the second, where Art targets a teenage girl (Lauren Lavera) and her younger brother (Elliott Fullam) on Halloween night. Lavera will also return for “Terrifier 3.”

In 2016, the original “Terrifier” film quickly became a cult horror classic, and...

Congolese Belgian Rapper-Turned-Filmmaker Baloji Looks for Good ‘Omen’ With Cannes Debut
Image
What’s in a name?

For the Congolese Belgian rapper-turned-filmmaker Baloji, whose directorial debut, “Omen,” bows in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section on May 22, it’s a question that poses itself whenever flustered immigration officials inspect his passport at the airport in Congo. “Always the same question, every time,” Baloji tells Variety. “Do you know what it means?”

In the pre-colonial era, baloji meant “man of science” in Swahili, but the word became corrupted by Christian evangelists during the years of Belgian colonial rule. Today it is more akin to a man of occult sciences and sorcery. “Some people of faith do not dare to say my name in public for fear of invoking evil spirits and the suspicions that may accompany it,” the director says. “In such an animistic culture it is equivalent to being called devil or demon in the West.”

He admits it...

Screambox Acquires Sci-fi Creature Feature ‘Subject’ Ahead of Chattanooga Film Festival!
Image
Cineverse announced today that they have acquired all North American rights to the mind-bending Australian horror film Subject. Gritty and cerebral, the film premiered at the Monster Film Festival and has been featured at festivals around the world including the upcoming Chattanooga Film Festival and was even selected for Cannes’ Frontières showcase.

Subject will premiere on Cineverse’s horror streaming platform, Screambox, which is powered by Bloody Disgusting, as a Screambox Original.

From award-winning director Tristan Barr (Good Times), Subject follows a man ensnared in a sinister government experiment. On his way to prison, Willem is presented with an intriguing offer: take part in a shadowy government experiment and have his sentence commuted.

But little does he know his isolation experiment may not be what it seems, casting doubt upon his perceived solitude and raising questions about his true state of aloneness.

“Subject is an isolating experience that pulls you...

‘Omen’ Review: An Artful and Intriguing Take on the African Diasporic Experience
Image
Baloji, the Belgian-Congolese rapper, explores a familiar set of themes with an artful and impressionistic touch in his directorial debut Omen (Augure).

Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, the magical-realist drama tackles displacement and belonging through four characters who’ve been ostracized by their communities. The musician pulls from his personal experiences and uses a visual language honed in his short films, like 2018’s Zombies, to craft a beguiling tale.

The journey begins with Koffi (Marc Zinga), a young Congolese man living in Europe with his white fiancée Alice (Lucie Debay). We see him preparing for an upcoming trip to Democratic Republic of Congo, where he hopes to amend his relationship with his family. Koffi’s birthmark — a large Rorschach-esque blot — frightened his mother, Mujila (a sharp Yves-Marina Gnahoua), when he came out of the womb. She labeled him a sorcerer and sent him to Europe.

The Zombies’ Rod Argent Breaks Down Their New Album Different Game
Image
The Zombies only released two albums during their initial run, but the hits keep them coming back. Director Robert Schwartzman’s documentary, Hung Up on a Dream, named after a song from their classic album Odessey and Oracle, premiered at the Zach Theater during SXSW on March 12. Cooking Vinyl Records will release Different Game on March 31.

The Zombies’ first full-length album since 2015’s Billboard-charting Still Got That Hunger features founding keyboardist Rod Argent and lead singer Colin Blunstone, along with drummer Steve Rodford, guitarist Tom Toomey, and bassist Søren Koch. It retains the variety of sounds the band has been cultivating since their formation in 1961.

In 1964, The Zombies won a recording contract with Decca Records, the same label as the Rolling Stones, as first prize in a contest sponsored by The London Evening Post. Their single, “She’s Not There,” hit the charts internationally, and the band was part of...

What to expect from Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’
One of the most anticipated movies right now is Army of the Dead, directed by Zack Snyder, who has worked on some of the most popular films of the decade including Justice League, Batman V Superman, Man of Steel and 300. He is a well established and a much sought after professional in the industry. Snyder has been on hiatus for a while because his latest and probably the most buzz-worthy film, Justice League got him into quite some trouble. The short version of the story is that midway through the film, Snyder had to leave the production and was replaced by the director that took the movie in a completely different direction. This has caused quite an outrage among the fans who are now demanding the release of the Snyder cut, and paying extra money to see this cut wherever it is available. Because of the hectic response, he...

Big Changes Are Happening in Zombies 2 Sneak Peek
Things sure have changed in Zombies 2.  E! News has a little sneak peek of Disney Channel's follow-up to its 2018 hit Zombies, and everyone is now truly working together, at least according to this clip. There are zombies on the cheerleading squad, and Addison (Meg Donnelly) ditched her wig to wear her white hair loud and proud, and Zed (Milo Manheim) seems to be leading the charge to tear down the power plant that caused all this zombie outbreak in the first place, hoping to turn it into a place "where everyone can cheer," where zombies can be cool and no longer frightening to the citizens of Seabrook.  Of course, while big changes are happening, not everybody's thrilled. "Green hair is...

Which Version Of Pride & Prejudice Has The Best Live-Action Mr. Darcy?
Mr Darcy may be one of the most iconic and beloved romantic interests in the history of both literature and film. This misanthropic, awkward, and smug hero stole our hearts in several different versions of the classic tale. And it is very likely that it will continue to be stolen again in the future as Hollywood seems to love modeling their male leads after this iconic character.

Though Pride and Prejudice has seen dozens of adaptations since it was originally released, today we are going to be comparing three different versions of the story. Ryan Reynolds Almost Showed Up in Zombieland: Double Tap
Paul Wernick
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese tried really hard to have Ryan Reynolds play a part in Zombieland Double Tap. It just wasn't meant to be. Wernick and Reese worked with Reynolds on the first Deadpool movie and then the highly successful sequel, so they're all pretty tight. Originally, Reynolds was going to portray Luke Wilson's character, Albuquerque. "We made it a goal to do only Ryan Reynolds movies," Wernick said in a joking tone. "But this one slipped through our fingers. Luke was amazing and it worked out terrific for us."

Ryan Reynolds is an in-demand actor and had his hands full with a number of other projects and family obligations with a baby on the way. There's no doubt that he would've jumped on board Zombieland: Double Tap to work with his friends. With that being said, the man can't be everywhere at once and it was probably...

‘Zombieland 2′ Writers On Rival Zombies, Ryan Reynolds’ No-Go Cameo And … A Broadway Show?
Paul Wernick
Are Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese the funniest writing team in Hollywood these days or just the hottest? The tandem’s latest is Zombieland 2: Double Tap, the Sony/Columbia Pictures horror comedy that last weekend enjoyed a robust opening ($39 million worldwide box office against a $42 million production budget) despite the intimidating gap (10 years and 16 days) that separated the sequel’s release and the original movie’s opening in October 2009.

Sequels that lag beyond four years risk squandering their marketplace traction (fresh example: that middling Maleficent opening) but Zombieland 2 has already bucked the trend thanks to the charismatic returning cast, the brand’s comedy credibility, and the franchise’s still under-appreciated legacy as a pioneer of the undead sector.

The pop culture landscape has far more zombies roaming it these days than it did back in 2009. The hungry hordes represent screen projects like The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead,...

Zombie Comedies Ranked
David Crow Oct 18, 2019

In honor of Zombieland: Double Tap, we rank all the movies that mixed yuks with human chunks in the zombie comedy subgenre.

For those old enough to remember a time before The Walking Dead premiered on AMC, it’s strange to admit we’ve reached a zombie saturation point. Believe it or not, there was a moment where you were not inundated with zombie movies, zombie TV shows, zombie video games, and zombie memes. Rather the undead were a cult novelty that allowed indie filmmakers to speak truth to power… via allegories involving lots of brain-munching and disembowelment. What could be better?

Now it’s hard to take a single step in the pop culture landscape without landing on a reanimated corpse with a belly full gray matter—not that this should be treated as the end of the world. Indeed, as you’ll see in many of the movies below,...

Interview: Lee Min-Jae Brings Zombies to Chicago on Asian Pop-Up Cinema’s Opening Night
Chicago – Season Nine of Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc) opened with an undead celebration as director Lee Min-Jae brought his hilarious horror satire “The Odd Family: Zombie on Sale” to Chicago on September 10th, 2019. The film was part of a South Korea themed week for Apuc, as it launched its latest series.

Human Bio, the largest pharmaceutical company in Korea conducts illegal experiments on humans. One test goes wrong, and results in the creation of a twentysomething zombie. The creature escapes, and encounters an odd family named Park in a remote countryside. When their father is bitten, they discover that one of the symptoms is a fountain of youth. This leads to profiting off the zombie’s bite, and repercussions for those who take advantage of it. Meanwhile, the youngest Park daughter has a crush on “Jongbie” (as she nicknames him), and is the only one that really protects him.

The Reptile
Hammer’s attempt at a budget monster romp for 1966 isn’t quite as good as its sister film Plague of the Zombies, but it has fine atmosphere and a couple of worthy grace notes, namely its fine actresses Jennifer Daniel and Jacqueline Pearce. Although the title monster bites some fans the wrong way, it works for this reviewer — it’s every appearance is a surprise, and for me it’s convincingly… reptilian.

25 Best Ar Games for iOS and Android
Jason M. Gallagher Jul 19, 2019

Played Pokemon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and wondering what else you should try? Here are the 25 best Ar games!

Augmented reality isn't just a concept or gimmick anymore. Pokemon Go took the technology mainstream in the summer of 2016, and now that game's developer is back this year with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

But those are just two games out of many in a still growing category. To that end, Den of Geek has put together a list of 25 of the best Ar games available now on your mobile devices:

Ingress

2012 | Niantic | iOS, Android

How important is Ingress to the Ar genre as a whole? It's not too far-fetched to say that, if developer Niantic had not first made Ingress, Pokemon Go might not have happened.

Ingress was first released on Android in 2013 and features the same location-based gameplay that would pave the way for Pokemon Go.

The Flash Movie: It Director Andy Muschietti in Talks to Direct
John Saavedra Jul 2, 2019

The Flash movie could soon have a new director in It's Andy Muschietti.

It's been a long journey for the Dceu's Flash movie starring Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, and there's just been yet another director turnover, according to THR, which is reporting that Warner Bros. is now in talks with It Chapter One and Two Andy Muschietti to helm the film. If he were to sign on, Muschietti would take over from John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Muschietti would also be the fourth director known for horror movies hired to direct a Dceu movie, the first being James Wan, who led 2018's Aquaman to a billion-dollar box office, with Shazam!'s David Sandberg (Lights Out) as the second. Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan) was recently tapped to direct the Black Adam movie as well. Let's also not forget that Muschietti had his own $700 million hit...

Rita: Showtime Pilot Starring Games of Thrones’ Lena Headey Gets Director
Joseph Baxter Oct 2, 2019

Fresh off Game of Thrones, Lena Headey is set to star in Rita, a subversive Showtime comedy pilot.

Lena Headey’s eight years in the role of the imperious, calculatingly cruel, shallow-end-of-the-gene-pool-fishing Cersei Lannister may seem to distance the actress from the concept of comedy, but that, indeed, is what the former Game of Thrones star has just procured, with a new TV pilot, with Showtime, called Rita.

Back in June, Showtime announced its pilot order for Rita, an adaptation of the 2012-2017 Danish series of the same name, in which Lena Headey will star as its title character, who’s described as “a headstrong, unconventional teacher and single mother who takes on every kind of authority – as well as her family – in a messy and unfiltered way.” Danish actress Mille Dinesen played the role in the original series.

In the latest news on Rita, Lisa Cholodenko...

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Is Making Playtesters Cry
Rob Leane Jun 7, 2019

The highly realistic Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare game is already eking out teardrops...

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the upcoming 2019 installment in the long-running shooter series, is starting to sound like a rather emotional experience. Apparently, people who've played the game early have had some eye-watering reactions. Literally.

"We’ve had multiple playtesters cry," campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff said in an interview with PC Games N. Modern Warfare is aiming to be highly realistic, leaving out more fanciful elements of the franchise in favor of gritty battles that could happen in real life. This added sense of groundedness could provide an explanation for these tear-jerking previews.

"I thought it was a joke when they told me," art director Joel Emslie said, "and then I watched a video of it. It was a real human moment, and now I’m like, ‘I worked on a game that made someone cry.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Won't Have Zombies Mode
John Saavedra Jun 5, 2019

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will skip the Zombies mode this year, but it does have a campaign.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, this year's installment in the popular first-person shooter series, won't feature a Zombies mode, a recent mainstay of the franchise. In fact, Modern Warfare is the first game to ship without a Zombies component since 2013's Ghosts, which instead had a mode called Extinction, where players faced off against hordes of hostile aliens.

According to Infinity Ward campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff, speaking to PlayStation Lifestyle, the reason for skipping Zombies this year is simple: Modern Warfare aims to be a more realistic shooter than the Black Ops series, which is usually the home of the undead horde mode.

"Because they focus on more of the stylized, graphic novel, super-hero experience, [Black Ops developer Treyarch] can have the much more 'out there' different types of gameplay in their games,...

Stars of ‘Descendants 3,’ ‘Zombies 2’ Laud Strong Female Characters on TV
Promoting strong female characters was very much on brand for several of Disney Channel’s star characters at Saturday’s Disney Channel Fan Fest held at California Adventure Park, a day-long event that treated kids and their families to a bevy of fan-focused activities, from Q&A sessions to musical performances and meet and greets with Disney Channel stars.

Sofia Carson, who stars as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen in Disney Channel’s original movies “Descendants” and “Descendants 2,” revealed that in the third installation her character will continue to be a positive role model for young viewers.

“Evie has always been very much focused on her heart and what she cares about most is giving back and especially empowering young girls and young women everywhere, so you’ll especially see that in ‘Descendants 3,’ said Carson, who also joined the cast of the Freeform drama series “Pretty Little Liars” this past year.

Rock Hall Class of 2019: The Zombies Reanimate British Rock
Tony Sokol Apr 27, 2019

Who would have thought the British Invasion would lead to a Zombie apocalypse? The Rock Hall of Fame did.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2019 includes a witch, a Goth band which celebrated disintegration, and a reanimated squad of necromantic romantics who stormed America as part of the British Invasion. The Zombies should have been the retro rock band of the zombie apocalypse. The off-kilter drum, bass and breath which heralded the oncoming melodic horde of chords of the song "Time of the Season" perfectly suited the march of the undead which altered the world in World War Z. What could be more frightening than being out on patrol with Carol, the most adept walker deterrent on The Walking Dead, running into a bunch of munchers and realize: she's not there? The band never truly embraced horror in a direct musical assault, but they...

The Zombies’ Rod Argent: 5 Songs That Inspired Me
Rod Argent
When the Zombies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 29th, keyboardist-songwriter Rod Argent spoke from the stage about growing up in England during the Fifties and first discovering American rock & roll. “Elvis himself was a God,” he said. “I was 11 and I couldn’t imagine in any way being part of the same world.” A few weeks before the ceremony, Argent got on phone with Rolling Stone to discuss five pivotal songs that shaped him as a young songwriter and led to the incredible...

See the Zombies Celebrate Sixties Hits During Triumphant Rock Hall Performance
The Zombies revisited their idiosyncratic psych-pop at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday night. The surviving members of the Zombies’ Oddessey and Oracle lineup reunited after giving speeches for a rousing performance, which leaned heavily on songs from that landmark 1968 album.

Singer Colin Blunstone, keyboardist Rod Argent, bassist Chris White and drummer Hugh Grundy clapped and sighed as they kicked things off with “Time of the Season.” They didn’t miss a beat, a “Who’s your daddy?” or an extended keyboard solo as the...

The Zombies Talk Rock Hall Induction: ‘Suddenly, We’re There Forever’
The Zombies’ “Time of the Season” hit Number One on the Cashbox singles chart on March 29th, 1969. Fifty years later to the day, the group appeared at Barclays Center to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “The fact is that we’ve been nominated a few times,” says drummer Hugh Grundy. But he calls the timing of today’s induction ceremony “serendipity in itself.” “What’s meant to be is meant to be,” Grundy adds. “We had to wait for a while, but we made it.

Flashback: The Zombies’ Rod Argent Ventures Into the Land of Prog
On Friday night, the Zombies will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. Few keepsakes of the British Invasion sound as non-musty as “She’s Not There,” their first hit, or “Time of the Season,” their last. Colin Blunstone’s singing, which seems to float above the arrangements, is one reason for their enduring allure, but so is the keyboard playing of Rod Argent. His electric-piano runs on “She’s Not There” and smoky organ on “Time of the Season” have been inspiring air keyboardists for decades.

Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone in Bienvenue à Zombieland (2009)
Zombieland 2 Shoot Has Woody Harrelson Laughing All Day Long
Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone in Bienvenue à Zombieland (2009)
&#8232&#8232It's been a long tome coming, but Zombieland Double Tap is finally happening. For real. Zombieland was released 10 years ago. Can you believe it? Seems like just yesterday when we were introduced to the intriguing, and quite funny characters that inhabited the first filmscape.

The movie was very, very well received. It even got 90% on the Tomato meter, and that's no easy feat! A lot has happened in the real world since Zombieland was released last decade, however Zombies will never change. This is why even though it's been a long time, I think people will be excited to see yet another movie featuring the ever present pop culture monsters that we all seem to love so much.

This time around we once again get to see the loveable cast of Zombieland in a "sequel" called Zombieland: Double Tap. One of the stars of the movie, Woody Harrelson was making...

Interview: Juliane Block on zombie film ‘Hobbes House’ and more!
As writer, director, producer Juliane Block prepares to shoot Zombie home invasion movie Hobbes House, she reveals her early obsession with monster make-up, casting for a big fantasy Xmas movie and her fascination for the dark side of the human mind.

So tell us how Hobbes House was developed?

I always felt like I needed to get back to shooting an out-and-out horror film. There’s nothing like the fun on the set of a Zombie flick. While waiting for Lyra’s Wish, my next big project to be greenlit, I was talking to executive producer Malcolm Winter if he was game to shoot and finance a low budget film in between. Malcolm came back to me with a figure he felt comfortable raising in a very short time span. That was in October 2018. Wolf-Peter Arand, the writer, immediately got to work, developing the story together. He went on to...

Interview: Director Jen McGowan Talks Her Backwoods Thriller Rust Creek
Written by Julie Lipson, Rust Creek stars rising talent Hermione Corfield (King Arthur and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) as the young woman about to embark on her journey named 'Sawyer.' Set in the backwoods of Kentucky, Rust Creek is a very human story with characters that represent survival, a warped sense of entitlement and justice. Surrounded by a solid cast and strong crew, this story does not hold back and challenges the viewer to understand how things can get out of control even with the fullest of preparation. Jay Kay spoke with Director Jen McGowan about her tale of survival. They discuss casting, the physicality of the role, and tribalism for Dread Central. Daily Dead’s 2019 Winter Horror Preview
Happy almost 2019, dear readers! The holiday season is nearly over, but rather than let that get you down, why not indulge in some great horror movies coming our way over the next few months? Usually, the winter season of genre releases can be something of a mixed bag in terms of quality, but there some impressive projects coming out in the next few months that have me extremely excited as a horror fan. The two films that are my most anticipated are (of course) Us from Jordan Peele and Christopher Landon’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U, but I’m also very intrigued by what I’ve seen from films like Greta, Glass, Braid, Captive State, and Escape Room so far, and am really looking forward to seeing how those stories come together onscreen as well.

We also have a new sci-fi movie featuring Keanu Reeves getting released in the coming months,...

Happy Birthdead (2017)
My Best Friend's Exorcism Movie Is Coming from Happy Death Day Director
Happy Birthdead (2017)
Next year's sequel to Happy Death Day isn't the only film we can expect in filmmaker Christopher Landon's future. Along with Ellen Goldsmith-Vein from Gotham Group, Landon will be producing a feature film based on the horror novel My Best Friend's Exorcism for Endeavor Content. The novel's publisher, Quirk Books, is also producing the film. Although they've had their books Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children made into films in the past, this will be their first time producing. Currently, Landon hasn't officially signed on to direct the film as well, though he's reportedly developing the movie as a directing vehicle. Jenna Lamie (Awkward) is writing the script.

Described as "Heathers meets Beaches meets The Exorcist," My Best Friend's Exorcism will make for a rather interesting filmgoing experience. Set in 1988, the plot revolves around two teenage best friends named Abby and Gretchen. When...

Milo Manheim at an event for Captain Marvel (2019)
The kid is all right: Milo Manheim would be the youngest male — and first male teen — to win ‘Dancing with the Stars’
Milo Manheim at an event for Captain Marvel (2019)
Age is just a number, and Milo Manheim might prove that adage true again. The 17-year-old is one of the frontrunners to win “Dancing with the Stars” and would in turn become the show’s youngest male champ ever.

The “Zombies” star, who has the second highest average score this season, would break the record currently held by Jordan Fisher, then 23 when he took home the Mirrorball trophy in Season 25. Fisher had ended the 21-season, 10-and-a-half-year reign of Apolo Anton Ohno, who won Season 4 on his 25th birthday.

See ‘Dancing with the Stars’: Milo Manheim’s instant-classic Halloween dance was worthy of ‘American Horror Story’ [Watch]

Manheim, who was 4 when “Dancing” premiered in 2005, would also be the first male teenager to win. Not unlike the Oscars, younger women have fared better on “Dancing” than younger men, resulting in three female teen champs. Laurie Hernandez, the youngest overall winner, was 16 when...
