Like it or not, Disney and Pixar seem intent on focusing on sequels to their past animated hits. True, Pixar does have Elio coming out this summer for an original tale, but the future slate for them and regular Disney animation builds on the hit status of Inside Out 2. 

It appears easier for Disney to mine past successful IP than take a chance ons something new that can disapoint (such as Wish). So we're getting new installments for Zootopia, Frozen and Toy Story. Now, we can add another big Pixar sequel with Coco 2!

During the annual Walt Disney shareholders meeting, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that a sequel to the 2017 Oscar-winning hit is in the works. Per the release, the film reunites directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, with Mark Neilsen producing. The film is targeted for a 2029 release.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a sequel to Pixar’s 2017 Oscar-winning feature “Coco” would be coming soon during Thursday’s annual meeting of shareholders webcast. The company then announced “Coco 2” will debut in theaters in 2029, with original director Lee Unkrich returning to direct, alongside original co-director Adrian Molina.

Since “Coco” was released into theaters on Nov. 22, 2017, its importance to the company has only grown. The movie, directed by Lee Unkrich, has inspired everything from an elaborate live show at the Disney Parks to a dinner theater experience on the recent Disney Treasure cruise ship. It has also become a key part of Disney’s Halloween offerings, with multiple airings on linear Disney channels during the holiday and major placement on Disney+.

After years of delays and online vitriol, Disney is finally set to release its remake of “Snow White,” and it’s going to take a lot to keep it from becoming one of the biggest flops in the studio’s now decade-old remake series.

With a reported production budget said to be at least $250 million, “Snow White” is tracking for a domestic opening of $45-50 million and a global opening of around $100 million. For comparison, the domestic range is similar to the $45.9 million launch of Tim Burton’s 2019 remake of “Dumbo,” which went on to gross a disappointing $353 million worldwide against a $170 million budget before marketing.

That leaves “Snow White” in a situation where it will need an unexpected, multiweek comeback akin to what “Mufasa” achieved this past winter just to break even. Like “Mufasa,” it’s not going to get help from critics, who are tepid on the film...

The new trailer for Elio promises some fantastic fun for an intergalactic Pixar outing! However, it also hints the film may have undergone a major change in production!

It's been a tricky time for Pixar. The animation studio suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic, with Soul, Luca, and Turning Red all banished to Disney+ while Lightyear became the company's biggest flop. 

They turned it around, with Elemental overcoming a poor opening to become a box office success and Inside Out 2 being a monster hit. Elio was going to be arriving in March of 2024, only to be bumped to this summer. 

The first teaser, released in 2023, had the apparent setup of an alien race contacting Earth and demanding, "Give us your leader." Thanks to a telephone snafu, the aliens mistake young Elio (Yonas Kibreab) for Earth's leader and whisk him into space, where Elio has to "defend" humanity to the universe.

Earth gets an unlikely intergalactic representative in the first full trailer for the new Pixar movie Elio.

Disney released the trailer Wednesday ahead of the film’s theatrical release on June 20. The voice cast includes Yonas Kibreab, Jameela Jamil, Brad Garrett, Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly and Shirley Henderson.

Elio centers on the titular 11-year-old (Kibreab), who is mistaken for the ruler of Earth when he is beamed up to join an interplanetary group that includes representatives from various galaxies.

“I’m trying to get abducted — by aliens,” Elio said in a teaser trailer that Disney released late last year. “I’m supposed to be up there.”

Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian helmed Elio after initial writer-director Adrian Molina’s exit. Mary Alice Drumm produces the film.

Elio was first scheduled for release on March 1, 2024, before its debut was delayed. New footage from the film was shown during D23 in August.

Market movies are majorly marketed toward kids, but let’s be real, some of the best films of all time have come from animation. There is little doubt that Disney is the most dominant corporation in the entertainment industry. Now that Disney controls Pixar, Marvel Studios and the Star Wars franchise, the company can easily command the box office schedule. Disney movies have evolved massively from the animated princess movies of the past few decades to multi-genre movies known for diverse storylines and high-quality productions.

Disney has widespread appeal to viewers from every walk of life. Accordingly, the company will release an exciting slate of movies in theaters in the next few years. Fans eagerly await these upcoming releases and can mark their calendars for several movies with confirmed release dates soon.

Flow is the recipient of this year’s Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. And it is a tremendous feat, with it being Latvia’s first Oscar win and continuing the streak of animated feature victories from studios that are not from Disney nor Pixar.

Credit where credit is due for the tiny victor starring a black cat and its non-talking animal friends, it beat both the Pixar tentpole hit Inside Out 2 and the new DreamWorks darling The Wild Robot, directed by Disney veteran Chris Sanders. That was quite a feat.

But for Disney and Pixar, that moment may cause concern for the once mighty studios and its future in winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

It’s another year of high-profile animated sequels, led by Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys 2,” and Nickelodeon/Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Square Pants” and the “Smurfs” film.

But there are plenty of attention-grabbing originals in 2025: “Pixar’s sci-fi “Elio,” DreamWorks’ “Dog Man,” Sony Pictures Classics’ “The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol,” and Laika’s highly anticipated “Wildwood” (a tentative release). Plus, Crunchyroll/Sony Pictures offer the theatrical anime event of the year with “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” (“Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle”).

Jameela Jamil is opening up about her struggles before landing her first acting role.

The 39-year-old actress was a TV presenter and radio show host in the UK before moving to Los Angeles with a plan to work as a screenwriter.

That didn’t take long. Just week after leaving Warner Bros., Andrew Cripps has landed at Disney, where he’ll succeed Tony Chambers as head of theatrical distribution.

He’ll begin the gig March 3. The position opened up after Chambers was elevated to overseeing Europe, the Middle East and Africa as part of a major restructuring of how Disney operates businesses in the region.

Cripps is a veteran distribution exec who has worked at 20th Century Fox and Paramount. In his new role, he’ll be responsible for worldwide theatrical distribution for all films produced and released by Walt Disney’s seven banners: live action, Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Animation, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios and Searchlight. His purview will also include the Cinema Partnerships team, non-theatrical sales and the operation of the iconic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood

As the saying goes, one door closes and another opens, and former Warner Bros International Distribution Chief Andrew Cripps, who recently exited that studio, is driving down the street to Walt Disney Studios as their new Head of Theatrical Distribution. The three-decades-plus international distribution exec starts the job immediately.

Cripps replaces Tony Chambers, who was recently named President, The Walt Disney Company, Emea, after rallying Disney to north of $5 billion at the global box office.

We understand that Cripps’ segue to Disney happens to be fortuitous timing: The exec didn’t have the job offer in hand when he exited Warners. The announcement of Chambers’ transition from the theatrical distribution role occurred on Jan. 7 while Cripps and Global Marketing Boss Josh Goldstine were shown the door at Warners on Jan. 8.

“How to Train Your Dragon” will screen for audiences for the first time at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.

The world premiere will take place on April 2 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, more than two months ahead of the film’s theatrical release on June 13.

CinemaCon will undoubtedly be a receptive audience, but unveiling “How to Train Your Dragon” in this capacity signals Universal’s confidence in the movie’s commercial prospects. In previous years, CinemaCon attendees were first to see Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Warner Bros. and DC’s “The Flash.”

It's no secret that Disney had a lot to be thankful for in 2024. Not only were Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine the two highest-grossing films of last year, but Moana 2 was a close third. Premiering on Nov. 27, 2024, the hit sequel managed to take in over $1 billion dollars at the box office, and now, after nearly three months, it's finally been announced that the animated smash featuring the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho will make its streaming premiere on Disney+ on March 12, 2025.

The news of Moana 2's streaming release comes via The Wrap, which astutely points out that the date of March 12 is just in time for spring break in many school districts, meaning families who don't already own a digital copy of the film will be able to turn on Disney+ and sing such songs as "Can I Get a Chee Hoo" over and over again.

“Win or Lose,” Pixar’s first original TV series, takes a “Rashomon”-like approach to a co-ed middle school softball team called the Pickles as it heads to the championship game. For cinema owners, “Survive till 25” has become a mantra as one catastrophe after another has kicked their business’s recovery down the road. But the end of that long and winding road is here, so will the upcoming slate result in a true box office revival?

Over the next 11 months, Hollywood will unveil blockbuster hopefuls like “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “Wicked: For Good” and “Superman” with the goal of boosting the business to something resembling its pre-covid stature. With the pandemic and strikes in the rearview, domestic revenues are projected to reach $9.3 billion to $9.5 billion for the year. Those returns would rank as the best post-pandemic stretch though still down from before times, when North American ticket sales regularly climbed to $10.5 billion to $11 billion.

Brooks’ “Ella McCay,” starring Emma Mackey in the title role of a young politician taking over as governor of her state, has been given a Sept. 19, 2025 date courtesy of 20th Century Studios. Additionally, Sam Raimi’s “Send Help,” another 20th Century title, has been given a Jan. 30, 2026, date. That film stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien and is a thriller set on an island, where survivors of a plane crash struggle to stay alive.

Disney pushed the opening of “Elio,” the studio’s upcoming Pixar film, by a week, while unveiling the release dates of Sam Raimi’s “Send Help” and James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay.”

“Elio,” an animated science fiction adventure film, will debut on June 20. It was originally slated to open on June 13. That means it will no longer go head-to-head with Universal and DreamWorks’ live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which could have cannibalized its core audience of kids and families. In its new date, it will face off against Sony’s “28 Years Later,” a zombie thriller that is pitched at older moviegoers.

Those are also the crowds that will be turning up for “Send Help” and “Ella McCay,” both of which will be released by 20th Century Studios. “Send Help,” a horror film with Rachel McAdams, Chris Pang, Dylan O’Brien, and Dennis Haysbert, will open on Jan.

Disney just shifted this summer’s Pixar movie Elio by one week from June 13 to June 20.

Typically, the June Pixar movies go out during Father’s Day weekend, but Disney is going a week later with this one.

Elio moves away from being head-to-head with Universal/DreamWorks’ live-action take of How to Train Your Dragon on June 13, and instead will go head-to-head with the adult skewing zombie title 28 Years Later on June 20.

In addition, the date shift for Elio creates space in Disney’s summer slate, giving Lilo & Stitch (5/23) more room to play, with the Pixar title still ahead of anticipated blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps (7/25). Elio will be the only animated release in the wide gap between Looney Tunes (3/14) and Smurfs (7/18).

However, there are only three motion picture studios — Disney, Paramount and Universal — willing to pony up $7.5 million-$8 million for a 30-second spot on Fox before an audience that last year reached 123.7 million viewers across live linear and streaming.

For those in the dark, Super Bowl Lix on February is a rematch of the 2023 face-off between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, the latter eyeing an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl title.

Say what you will about linear being dead, but when it comes to live sports programming, it’s still a prime means of reaching a moviegoing audience. Big tentpole movies like Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.4M opening) and Wicked ($112.5M) launched during last year’s Super Bowl.
