    Batman and the Ripper

Such a great film. The cinematography by Mike Staniforth is absolutely beautiful, especially when considering that Ripper is a crowdfunded production. The visuals are crisp and clean; however, personally, I believe it would have benefited from a grimey VHS aesthetic, more in tone with the Giallo genre from the past.

The soundtrack by Metal Machine Music is brilliantly done and has shadows of Goblin synth echoing, chillingly throughout. Unfortunately, the musical score doesn't always mix well with what you're seeing on screen, which causes the music to fall a little flat every now and then. Finally, the performances can be a little unbalanced at times and the piece as a whole could have possibly benefited from a music video style approach with the musical score really dictating the emotions of the short.

    Groundbreaking fan film

This is so excellent. This should have been recognised more on YouTube as one of the great Batman fan films ever made. Great adaptation with the Jack the Ripper times.

Decent fan film, but not a great film per se

The internet is full of fan films, all of which open with disclaimers regarding the intellectual property that they are about to use. Mostly they are not much cop, but occasionally you do get some which stand out (usually due to the special effects being better than your average short film). In the case of Ripper we have the Batman back in Victorian England, hunting Jack the Ripper. Prostitutes are murdered on the streets daily, and the police are baffled – leading to the shadowy vigilante to get involved.

This film does stand out, mainly because it delivers much from Italian horror genre, with its gaudy colors and camera angles. This gives it an unusual look for a fan film, and at the same time the synth score makes for an usual aspect to a Batman film. The final scenes involving Batman and the Ripper are good in principle, and mostly work as a dialogue scene, but generally the film does feel too long and lacking in incident. For too long we just see the police frustrated by the murders, and lots of the Italian horror delivery mixed in. This dos get a little boring after a while, and I did lose interest – interest that didn't totally return when Batman finally shows up in the shadows.

Technically it is really well made in some ways – the locations are really good, even if the cast are a bit too "blimey gov'ner apples and pears etc". The camera-work is mostly good, but the sound is variable – sometimes very hard to hear and, while the music is an unusual selling point, it does get a bit tiresome and doesn't fit very often. Still, it is a decent fan film with plenty of ambition and interesting ideas; but as a film in its own right it is not too good – although I would be right back if they make the sequel that the post-credits sequence suggests.

A great film - needs to be seen by the public

Despite being a fan-film, the production values are, quite simply, incredible. This doesn't just look like London from the 1880s, this IS London from the 1880s. Every item of clothing, every street and alleyway, hell even the pavements, look so damn authentic that it hurts. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride has got nothing on this.

The cast do great jobs too, perfectly invoking the way that people both talked and behaved during the period in a way that many period pieces fail to do. Established Hollywood actor Bruce Payne, who you may remember from films such as Dungeons & Dragons and its sequel, also makes a memorable appearance.

Of all the countless fan-films that are released nowadays, Ripper is certainly one of the best. One of the best things about fan productions is that they really show exactly what people who love a certain series want from it in a way that official products often fail to do, and in this area Ripper gets it exactly right, making it one of the most memorable fan-films in recent memory. The film is embedded below, so definitely give it a watch.
