‘Stupid Games’ Review
Image
Stars: Saad Rolando, Alyssa Tortomasi, Ashwini Ganpule, Cass Huckabay, Gage Robinson, Grant Terzakis | Written by Nicolas Wendl, Dani Abraham, Tanner Adams | Directed by Nicolas Wendl, Dani Abraham

“Play stupid games, wins stupid prizes.” It’s a saying almost as overused as “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t”. And in this film from directors Nicolas Wendl and Dani Abraham and writer Tanner Adams, all involved should have heeded them.

A while back Jaxon and Celeste hooked up, and then she ghosted him. Now, out of the blue she’s invited him over for dinner, the catch is he has to bring two of his friends for her two roommates, Mia and Riley. His buddy Rex is happy to join him but when their other friend backs out, they end up recruiting Stanley the cable guy.

When the power goes out during dinner, the guys see...

Indian Women’s Cricket Team U.P. Warriorz Docuseries in the Works From Arlene Nelson, Victory Sports Media (Exclusive)
Image
Arlene Nelson will direct a documentary series on Indian Women’s Premier League cricket team U.P. Warriorz, it was revealed on the sidelines of the Asian TV Forum and Market (Atf).

The men’s Indian Premier League (Ipl) is one of the most lucrative properties in world sport. In June 2022, Viacom18, a TV and streaming group backed by billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani, paid $3 billion to win an online auction for two packages of digital rights to the men’s Ipl cricket. Disney, which held the TV and digital rights to Ipl for the past five seasons, won only the broadcast TV rights, but agreed to pay $3.01 billion for them.

The Women’s Premier League launched earlier this year and also proved to be enormously popular. The city-based team franchise rights were sold for $572 million and the media rights for $116 million.

Nelson recently directed “Angel City,” a three-part HBO documentary...

Catherine Hardwicke Was Paid Just $3 For Directing Thirteen, But It Was Worth It
Image
The life of a movie director isn't all glamour and red carpets. Getting movies made, particularly personal stories or passion projects, can be exceedingly difficult. Then if the movie fails to turn a profit, the director will be left more precarious and with fewer doors open than before. Oftentimes, directors will make compromises to get their movies realized — particularly financial compromises. Catherine Hardwicke, in a recent interview with Yahoo News, detailed her struggles to make her debut "Thirteen."

The film is about two (you guessed it) 13-year-old delinquents, Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) and Evie (Nikki Reed). According to Hardwicke, the characters' ages and the sensual subject matter meant no studio would touch it: "Every financier said, 'No, we can't make it. How could we make a movie that's gonna be R-rated with an unknown 13-year-old girl in the lead?'"

"Thirteen" was ultimately shot for $2 million (raised by Hardwicke herself with independent equity) over 24 days.

Brian Cox Blames ‘Millennials’ for ‘Woke Culture’: They’re Usually ‘the Arbiters of This Shaming’
Image
Brian Cox won’t be Method acting as a millennial (again) anytime soon.

The “Succession” actor, who was recently once again Emmy-nominated for portraying Logan Roy in the hit HBO series, which aired its fourth and final season this year, criticized “woke culture” in a recent sitdown with Piers Morgan. Cox expressed his disdain for what he alleges is a social media-led trend during Morgan’s “Uncensored” talk show.

“I don’t think social media helps. It hinders, not helps,” Cox said. “I think it points out too readily inadequacies. And the whole woke, what we’ve talked about before, the whole woke culture is truly awful […] and the shaming culture.”

He continued, “I don’t know where it comes from. Who are the arbiters of this shaming? And it’s very hard to pin them down, and, it turns out, it’s usually a bunch of millennials. I suppose...

Original Ghostbusters Actor Teases Winston's Afterlife 2 Role & New Character Direction
Image
Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 is putting Ernie Hudson's Winston Zeddemore on a new path, and the actor is excited about it, even if it's a different direction from his own ideas. Hudson was introduced in the latter half of the original Ghostbusters movie, being a belated recruit to the eponymous team in an effort to deal with the growing business demand rather than being another scientist interested in the field. Hudson was one of the many original stars to return for 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 and even got a special post-credits stinger.

In a recent exclusive interview with Screen Rant for the family drama Prisoner's Daughter, Ernie Hudson looked back on his time in the Ghostbusters franchise. In addition to clarifying his recent comments about the unfair treatment he received working on the original movie, the original Ghostbusters star shared some new insight for his return in Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, expressing his excitement for Winston's new direction,...

Exclusive: Tyson Ritter and Catherine Hardwicke on Violence and Prisoner's Daughter
Image
Prisoner's Daughter is an emotional character study and family drama that follows a prisoner on compassionate release as he struggles to reunite with his estranged daughter and grandson despite his illness. It's a quietly contemplative study of violence with a star-studded team — Brian Cox plays Max, the formerly violent muscle for the mob, and Kate Beckinsale plays his daughter Maxine, a working-class woman struggling to care for her son, Ezra (Christopher Convery).

Joining Cox and Beckinsale is Tyson Ritter (singer of the band All-American Rejects) as Maxine's ex-husband and Ezra's father, Tyler. He's a man who is probably (and tragically) similar to her father when he was younger — selfish, violent, and not a great father. Meanwhile, Ezra is being violently bullied and has to decide if he should be violent in return, and Max has to decide if he should return to violence in order to stop Tyler from wreaking havoc on Maxine's life.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 Actor Confirms "The Movie Is Done" Filming & Addresses A Potential Release Delay

With just a few months gone from when production kicked off, Ernie Hudson has confirmed that Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 is officially done filming. Hudson reprised his role of original Ghostbuster Winston Zeddemore in the 2021 legacy sequel alongside fellow franchise vets Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver. 'Prisoner's Daughter' Review: Kate Beckinsale and Brian Cox Can’t Save Muddled Drama
Image
In a month filled with blockbuster releases, Prisoner’s Daughter quietly sneaks into theaters as a small-scale drama about second chances and toxic patterns. It’s an admirable goal, and with Brian Cox and Kate Beckinsale in lead roles, the movie had everything to deliver an emotional exploration of the hardships of everyday life. Unfortunately, Catherine Hardwicke’s latest movie is a misfire, pulled down by a script that’s stiff, contradictory, and ultimately boring.

Exclusive: Brian Cox Talks Celebrating Humanism in Prisoner's Daughter
Image
At 77, Brian Cox is having one of the biggest years of his life. Yes, the great actor has been an enduring screen presence throughout the past half century, with films like Manhunter, Braveheart, Rushmore, and The Bourne Identity solidifying his place in the cinematic pantheon, but 2023 feels special.

Ending his four seasons on Succession as the powerful patriarch Logan Roy, Cox has been a household fixture this decade. Following his final bow in that show, Cox excelled in the quiet Sinqua Walls drama Mending the Line, and is now starring opposite Kate Beckinsale in the emotional new film, Prisoner's Daughter.

Cox plays Max, an aging criminal inmate who is given a compassionate release from prison as cancer pulls him to the end of his life. In order to do so, he needs a place to stay, leading to a tense reconciliation with his estranged daughter, Maxine (Beckinsale). He bonds with his grandson,...

Audiences love a young actor who can deliver a terrific performance. Last year, Mckenna Grace received high acclaim for her role in A Friend of the Family, and Jack Dylan Grazer continues to make a name for himself with arguably one of the best performances in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

What do these actors have in common? They are surrounded by an excellent cast. Grace co-starred alongside Anna Paquin and Colin Hanks. Grazer received similar treatment with Fury of the Gods, as the cast was stacked with the likes of Zachary Levi (Chuck), Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren, among others.

Luckily, Christopher Convery, who stars in the upcoming family drama Prisoner's Daughter, also had a star-studded cast joining him in the feature film. Convery is no stranger to Hollywood, appearing in several big-name projects even if he didn't have the starring role. Some of these include the massive Netflix series Stranger Things,...

‘Prisoner’s Daughter’ Review: Brian Cox Continues to Play Problematic Patriarchs in Predictable Feel-Good Drama
Image
It’s almost impossible for Brian Cox to be in a bad movie because, well, he’s giving a Brian Cox performance every time. Simply put, Cox is the saving grace of his latest feature, “Prisoner’s Daughter,” a predictable family drama that has heart thanks to grounding performances by Cox, Ernie Hudson, and breakout child star Christopher Convery. The rest, however, leaves a lot to be desired.

However, there are still other pleasures to be found in the final product. Catherine Hardwicke is building out the perfect frothy cinematic universe where “Prisoner’s Daughter” and her recent Toni Collette vehicle “Mafia Mamma” could beautifully coexist — and make for an enjoyable wild ride.

Hardwicke previously spoke with IndieWire’s Kate Erbland about her wide-ranging tastes when it comes to picking scripts, and “Prisoner’s Daughter” is no exception. Written by Mark Bacci and premiering at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, the family drama...

Brian Cox Will Return For Super Troopers 3 On One Condition (& A Lynda Carter Pitch)
Image
With the prankster police officers having returned five years ago, Brian Cox shares his thoughts on a potential Super Troopers 3 return. Created by the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, the Super Troopers movies revolve around a mischievous group of Vermont Highway Patrol officers as they frequently find their jobs in jeopardy thanks to their comedic antics. With two movies spread across 17 years, the franchise has garnered mixed critical reviews, but modest box office returns and large cult followings.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the family drama Prisoner's Daughter, Brian Cox was asked about the chances of a Super Troopers 3 return. Though not sharing whether he's been approached just yet, the star did express his interest in coming back for a trilogy capper on the one condition of avoiding any night shoots, as well as pitching a new scene between him and Lynda Carter. See what Cox shared below:

Catherine Hardwicke Says ‘Twilight’ TV Show Should Keep Vampire Romance ‘More Grounded’
Image
“Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke hopes the upcoming TV series adaptation sinks its teeth deeper into the forbidden romance at the center of the teen vampire saga.

Hardwicke helmed the first film that was released in 2008 and starred Kristen Stewart as high schooler Bella and Robert Pattinson as undead bloodsucker Edward. The director stepped away from the franchise after the initial film’s mixed reception and was replaced by Chris Weitz. Lionsgate recently announced a TV series adaptation in early development over a decade since the film series concluded in 2012.

“I think it’s exciting,” Hardwicke told MovieWeb of the upcoming show. “I think we see that it’s an enduring story that people keep engaging with. You know, the TikTok world loves it, the internet generations, everybody keeps finding it. I was talking to a girl the other day, she was born the year we made the first ‘Twilight’ film,...

Brian Cox Interview: Prisoner's Daughter
Image
Follow a different kind of family reunion with Prisoner's Daughter. The family drama movie centers on Brian Cox's Max, a convicted prisoner given a compassionate release after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis leaves him with five months to live but on the sole condition of being on house arrest with his estranged daughter, forcing the two to confront the sins of his past.

Alongside Cox, the cast for Prisoner's Daughter includes Kate Beckinsale as Max's daughter Maxine, Christopher Convery, Jon Huertas, Ernie Hudson, and Tyson Ritter. Helmed by Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown's Catherine Hardwicke, the movie is an emotional and engrossing character study with a powerful cast carrying it forward.

‘Prisoner’s Daughter’: Catherine Hardwicke’s Latest Gets Out of Jail and Into Melodrama
Image
Her career hobbled by uninspired material since the commercial bonanza of “Twilight’s” first screen installment 15 years ago, Catherine Hardwicke at first appears to be back on firmer terra with “Prisoner’s Daughter.” Its mix of adult dysfunction and coming-of-age pains against a downscale milieu (here working-class Las Vegas) recalls the director’s strong initial features, “Thirteen” and “Lords of Dogtown.”

But this drama, with Brian Cox as a terminally ill ex-con reunited with daughter Kate Beckinsale and her son, soon reveals itself as a formulaic contrivance heading towards predictable strife and tearjerking. Competently handled and well-cast, it’s nonetheless held back from generating much authentic emotion by the too-familiar beats of Mark Bacci’s script. Vertical is opening the feature, which premiered at TIFF last fall, on limited U.S. theatrical screens this Friday. It’ll doubtless do better in release to home formats, those dates as yet Tba.

Brian Cox Says He Wants to Become an Aged Action Hero Like Liam Neeson
Image
Succession actor and Golden Globe winner Brian Cox is ready to follow in the footsteps of Taken star Liam Neeson and become the next aged action star. Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, Cox was asked whether he had any interest in wanting to go down the same route as Neeson, and it turns out the classically trained Shakespearean actor is very interested, indeed.

"I'm all for expanding, going into new territory. I mean, to be a 77-year-old action star might be something quite interesting to do. You know, I'm not against it. I'm not against that at all. In fact, I'm very glad you brought it up, because I'm really not against that at all. I've often thought, 'Oh, I could maybe do all that.' But I haven't done it because it's just been a different world. But if I would do it, it'd only be if it was a great script.

Previously adapted as a series of feature films, Twilight is based on the original novels by Stephenie Meyer. Released in 2008, the movie series was kicked off by director Catherine Hardwicke, launching what would become a pop culture phenomenon. As Hardwicke was there to get the franchise off the ground on the big screen, what does she think about rolling the dice with another adaptation of the story?

Prisoner's Daughter Review: Kate Beckinsale Steals the Show in New Family Drama
Image
Prisoner's Daughter, the upcoming family drama from director Catherine Hardwicke, gives its stars every chance to shine across its short run time. The film follows Max (Brian Cox), a man in and out of prison for presumably his whole life, and his daughter, Maxine (Kate Beckinsale), a single mom taking care of her son Ezra (Christopher Convery). After serving his latest sentence, which was a long twelve years, Max is allowed to return to his home under house arrest to live out his remaining months after a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Of course, plenty of baggage comes with that, as the relationship between Max and Maxine is strained to say the least. She grew up without her father around most of the time, which led to her mother developing an ultimately fatal relationship with alcohol. Without a connection to fall back on, Maxine only agrees to take in her father for one reason: money.

Netflix's Scoop: Why You Should Watch This Underrated Indian Crime Drama
Image
As much as working in the field of journalism can bring about feelings of euphoria and excitement when your name comes to be featured under the front page byline, the occupation can also become a very risky endeavor. Not only do you take quotes from innocent witnesses and bystanders who were potentially at the scene of a crime, but you might end up finding yourself in the same social circles that encompass criminals and mafia members if you dive too deep chasing that next big story.

Adapted from a biographical memoir titled Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days In Prison by Ms. Jigna Vora (who was Deputy Chief of Bureau at a very popular English language Indian newspaper called The Asian Age), a new show on Netflix that was released just last week shows what happens when someone’s passion for reporting inadvertently takes them too far.

Winston Churchill in London Sept 1949
Post your questions for Brian Cox
Winston Churchill in London Sept 1949
Whether you want the inside skinny on Logan Roy, Hannibal Lecktor, Winston Churchill or King Lear, the mighty Scottish actor will be here to tell all

Brian Cox needs no introduction – other than the usual one establishing which Brian Cox we’re talking about. This one is the 76-year-old Dundee-born actor, who started his career as a classically trained Shakespearean thespian, who played opposite Laurence Olivier in King Lear in 1983. His performances in Rob Roy and Braveheart shot him into the mainstream. Roles soon followed in The Long Kiss Goodnight and Super Troopers. Turns out Treadstone was all his fault in 2002’s The Bourne Identity. And if he’d been a bit nicer to the apes in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, perhaps they wouldn’t have taken over the world. Silly Brian.

Cox can still boast he was the original Dr Hannibal Lecter (or Lecktor), in Michael Mann...
