It's not the film the IMBD rating suggests

I can't remember I last anticipated seeing a film as much as this. No theatrical release to speak of here in the UK, impossible to find on domestic dvd so ended up with a Dutch import. The IMDB score of 4.3 wasn't encouraging but I was still looking forward to seeing it.

In the end it was a real pleasure. Not a film you watch for narrative satisfaction but intensely atmospheric and a performance from Kirsten Dunst that kept you engaged from start to finish.

Beautiful to look at, listen to and experience. Well worth your time.

Well produced but lacking a driving force

There was a lot here with potential. Kirsten Dunst did a good job and the cinematography and production were actually really good.

The problem is although the film has a strong central premise it feels as though it is constantly searching for its fundamental story thread. It never quite manages to provide that compelling central part to the story which the other story threads can be anchored too. Even the main plot line of the grief stricken woman falling into a drug fueled fantasy feels more like a side plot to a missing central story. Its a shame, there really was a lot here to like but it ended up being a mediocre film as a result.

    Ahead of its time

I believe this film is ahead of its time. I can appreciate this movie for several reasons 1) I was in the right mental space, I wasn't expecting a lot 2) It reminded me of several films I've watched in a dream in cinema class, therefore I could appreciate the work that was put into this film 3) The cinematography was stunning.

Sure, if you're looking for a film that has an easy to follow premise, this may not be the movie for you! But if you enjoy symbolism, beautiful shots, and controversial topics, give it a try. I don't think you need to know exactly what is happening in the moment to enjoy a film.

    Wanna get high?

This film is terribly amazing, this film is sort of like a good camp film everybody and everything is so serious yet it is all so poorly executed. Mainly the plot is a few things happen then latter the plot may or may not tell you what in the hell was/is going on. Kirsten Dunst is amazing in this film she plays a stoned out of her mind super pot head who is just about always in her underwear or in a dress that is very focused on her boobs and butt.

The film really goes for a Nicholas Winding Refn/Safdie Brothers kind of neonesc lighting that really doesn't work with the camera movements, though it does add humor. The writing is very lacking and so is the visual story, if you were deaf or blind you'd have even less of an idea as to what is going on then those with both which is still pretty much no idea. There really isn't much of a story and not in a good "where the story lacks everything else expands" kind of way but just in a sort of "weak story that tries to seem deep" kind of way, if that makes any sense. One last critic is that the cinematography really takes me out of the reality of the reality of the films world, it just seems like a visual image not a place I could be or am.

I do like the film though, it is extremely original in the weirdest way possible, which is fantastic. If you don't take it very seriously you'll have a fun time. I really hope the Mulleavy Sisters make another film because I will definitely watch it.

(P.S. There's a Galaxie 500 song playing during one of the scenes which is just awesome)

LOVE all of these actors but this movie is meh at best...

I can appreciate other people's "Art". The cinematography is the only positive about this movie... The story could have been good but it was so slow & just ridiculous... I tried, I really did but when it ended I was thinking, why? .. I love all of these actors.. I have loved watching all of their work.. They are each so very talented but even they couldn't make a bad script look good... The 3 starts are for Kirsten, Joe & Pilou who so very graciously agreed to do this movie! I hope they were each paid very well!
