Mix Tape Episodes 1-3 Recap: Why Did Daniel Block Alison?
Image
When I first saw Jim Sturgess in the 2011 film One Day, it was his striking prettiness that left the strongest impression. Now, nearly a decade and a half later, watching him in the Binge miniseries, Mix Tape, I find myself far more drawn to his nuanced ability to convey longing for lost love and the weight of unresolved feelings beneath a carefully maintained facade. Starting out as a story about two young lovers, the show weaves between two timelines, building an almost anxious tension as we watch these adults, who once parted ways abruptly, now trapped in marriages and parenthood, trying to find their way back to each other. Between the fiery teenage romance and the aching longing years later, the show also treats us to a killer nostalgic soundtrack that spans decades, from the late ’70s to now. Think The Cure, Nick Drake, David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, The Velvet Underground,...

Mix Tape Review: A Story Told on Two Sides of a Cassette
Image
The romantic drama built on dual timelines is a familiar narrative structure. It often serves to build suspense around a central mystery—what event drove the characters apart? Mix Tape, an Irish-Australian production, employs this device but shifts its focus. The story introduces us to Alison and Daniel, first as teenagers in 1989 Sheffield, where a raw, immediate connection forms over shared cassettes of The Cure and New Order.

Their courtship is built song by song. The narrative then cuts to the present, finding them as adults living entirely separate lives on opposite sides of the globe, each married with children. The series is less interested in the mechanics of a potential reunion and more in examining the persistence of memory.

It poses a different question: not will they get back together, but can a person ever find closure for a formative relationship that never had a clean ending? The story is built around the quiet,...

Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service Exclusive Clip: Uncovering a Health Horror Show
Image
Think your favorite local diner is safe? Think again.

Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service is here to remind us why we might want to stick to cooking at home.

In this exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming “Mrs. White’s” episode, Ramsay proves that what we don’t see behind kitchen doors could ruin our appetite for good.

(Fox/Screenshot)

The clip is stomach-turning. And not in the exaggerated TV way — in the real, “I may never eat chicken again” kind of way.

Ramsay uses tiny inspection cameras to probe under stoves and behind shelves, only to find decades of grease, grime, and biological betrayal.

(Fox/Screenshot)

It’s like peering into a culinary crime scene.

One glance at the goop-covered mystery equipment or the vat of what used to be poultry and you’ll be rethinking your next restaurant outing.

Image
HBO’s post-apocalyptic zombie world has been back for a few weeks now, and it’s crawling under our skin. ‘Ted’ Animated Series From Seth MacFarlane Set at Peacock With Mark Wahlberg Co-Starring
Image
Peacock has given a series order to “Ted: The Animated Series,” the working title for an animated spinoff of the 2012 and 2015 live-action comedy film franchise created and directed by Seth MacFarlane, who starred with Mark Wahlberg.

The order further expands the franchise following the success of “Ted,” Peacock’s live-action prequel series.

MacFarlane of course will voice Ted, the foul-mouthed, magical talking teddy bear at the center of the story, with Wahlberg providing the voice of Ted’s human companion, John Bennett.

Also returning from the original films are Amanda Seyfried as John’s girlfriend, Sam Jackson, and Jessica Barth as Ted’s wife, Tami-Lynn.

Joining them are Kyle Mooney as the voice of “Apollo,” most likely Ted and Tami-Lynn’s adopted son from “Ted 2,” and Liz Richman (“Little America”), who plays “Polly” on Peacock’s “Ted” live-action series and will voice “Ruth” for the cartoon.

The show comes from...

Image
Creature Commandos' final episode wraps up the Dcu's premiere project with spectacular emotion, phenomenal twists, and the promise of much more to come. While the underdog team arrived with very little fanfare as a group of misguided monsters, the members of Task Force M finish out season 1 as heroes ready to move on to the next big mission. The show did a fantastic job laying the foundation for the Dcu while still keeping the focus acutely on this group of lesser-known characters.

This animated series follows a covert team of monstrous inmates recruited for perilous missions deemed unsuitable for humans. United by secrecy and necessity, the Creature Commandos tackle extraordinary threats, serving as the ultimate option when traditional forces fall short.

Dazn Buying Australia’s Foxtel From News Corp & Telstra For $2.1B
Image
Sports streamer Dazn has made its biggest play to date, agreeing a A$3.4B ($2.2B) takeover of Australian pay-tv giant Foxtel.

The deal, which Dazn is billing as a “milestone” deal, will see the Sydney-based Foxtel exiting the hands of majority owner News Corp and minority shareholder Telstra, subject to regulatory approval.

Dazn sees Australia as a major sports market and given Foxtel’s model of offering subscribers many top-level sporting events, there are synergies between the companies. However, this marks the first time Dazn will own a platform as broad as Foxtel, which has 4.7 million subscribers and numerous entertainment, news and factual channels.

Should the deal go through, Dazn’s pro-forma revenues will near $6B annually, with 2023 group revenues sitting at $3.2B. The A$3.4B deal price values Foxtel at seven times its fiscal 2024 Ebitda.

Once completed, News Corp and Telstra will take minority stakes in Dazn, with the...

Image
Sports streaming platform Dazn has acquired Australian broadband company Foxtel Group from majority shareholder, Rupert Murdoph’s News Corp, and minority shareholder, Telstra, in a deal valued at $2.2 billion.

Per the press release from Dazn, the addition of Foxtel brings the group’s pro-forma revenues toward $6 billion and provides further content, expertise and expansion opportunities for its growth trajectory.

Foxtel is one of Australia’s leading media companies, with 4.7 million subscribers, who will gain access to Dazn’s portfolio of sports content. 2024 Has Been A Perfect Year To Be A Batman Fan, Despite Having No Live-Action Movie With The DC Hero
Image
Batman is one of the most popular superheroes in the DC Universe and, despite not receiving a live-action film, the character had many incredible appearances throughout 2024. Batman is beloved as a brilliant, rich martial artist with incredible dedication to his city and his craft. After a series of live-action Batman performances in the past, it appears that even more are ahead. Updates on The Batman Part II confirm it is scheduled for 2026, with another iteration in The Brave and the Bold to follow sometime in the years that follow.

With confirmation of a Clayface movie at DC Studios, more and more iterations of Batman and his villains appear to be ahead. While Joker: Folie à Deux did not live up to all expectations, it is incredible to see so much ancillary Batman content being made. While Batman is the heart of his own franchise, the roster of characters that...

Patricia Heaton Leads ‘The Beldham,’ a Postpartum Horror Story About the Traumas That Bookend Human Life — Watch Clip
Image
It isn’t hard to see why motherhood has been a favorite topic for 21st century horror filmmakers. As humans become more acutely aware of the involuntary forces and events that have shaped their own demons, filmmakers have gleefully embraced the challenge of showing us that our own damaged psyches are often scarier than anything the outside world can show us. Becoming a mother is a singular experience that can inflict trauma on both one’s self and the children for whom you’re responsible, making it fertile ground for directors looking to haunt our nightmares.

The latest entry in the subgenre is “The Beldham,” a new horror film that stars Patricia Heaton as an aging mother who takes her daughter and newborn granddaughter into her home. While the two women navigate uniquely vulnerable time periods in their lives, they find themselves haunted by an ominous presence that might predate both of them.

Hawaii 2024 Review: Out for Blood Shorts Shine
Image
[Still from Olga's Eyes] Having been a shorts filmmaker for most of my filmmaking life, I know exactly how difficult it is to get coverage at festivals for short films. When I’m able, I like to return the favor. While at the 44th annual Hawaii International Film Festival, I took in the Out for Blood shorts program. I’m happy to report that it was a very well-programmed block with a number of standouts, so let’s get to it. The first short in the program was Binge, co-directed by Sam David Zhang and Rohit Relan. A microshort at three minutes, it’s basically a harrowing moment within a larger scene, and is perhaps a short proof of concept. The short stars Clayton Farris (MaXXXine) as a man...

Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories Adapting Author Fiona McIntosh’s ‘The Pearl Thief’ As Film; ‘One Life’ Screenwriter Nick Drake Attached
Image
Exclusive: Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories has teamed with producer Monica Saunders-Weinberg to adapt Fiona McIntosh’s novel The Pearl Thief as a feature film. One Life screenwriter Nick Drake is attached to write.

Synopsis reads: “The stakes are high in this gripping novel set between the city of Prague and its snowy woodlands on the cusp of World War II, and later in the streets of Paris, London, and the heather-covered moors of Yorkshire in 1963.”

The plot will follow Katerina, a museum curator determined to overcome the trauma of her past and avenge the pain inflicted upon those she loved and those she’ll never know.

Nicholas Galitzine Almost Played a Vital Member of the Fantastic Four Before the Role Eventually Went to His Friend
Image
‘Fantastic Four’ is certainly among the most anticipated MCU projects. Partly due to the team’s first foray into the MCU and partly because the original movies left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. The reboot was first confirmed to be in development when Disney took over Fox and next to nothing was known about the movie and its cast until several months ago.

When the cast was finally announced, it broke the Internet. Pedro Pascal will be MCU’s new Reed Richards, with Vanessa Kirby taking on the role of Sue Storm. The Thing and the Human Torch will be played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn respectively.

Although the cast is really locked in this time around and confirmed, we’re only now finding out how close (or far) some characters were to playing some of the most iconic Marvel superheroes. One of them was Nicholas Galitzine,...

Breakout Australia comedy Colin From Accounts is back in production.

An official green light of Season 2 of the hit Binge sitcom came in August, after writers and stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer chose to down their pens in solidarity with WGA strike in the U.S. over the summer.

Brammall and Dyer finished the scripts once a deal was struck at the end of September. Production is now back underway across Sydney, with Easy Tiger Productions and CBS Studios returning the produce.

The show follows the lives of two flawed and funny people who begin an unconventional romance after being brought together when Ash (Dyer) spontaneously flashes her nipple at Gordon...

LA Screenings: How The Writers Strike Is Impacting This Year’s Event
Image
The last time a writers strike impacted the LA Screenings in 2008, the world was in recession and studios pared back their spend on glitzy marketing and all-singing, all-dancing parties and soirees. We are not quite at that stage, but, in 2023, these conditions have an air of familiarity.

Studios execs are under way with planning for their annual international TV buyer showcases following this week’s Upfront presentations, but there is a sense of uncertainty from all sides heading into the week, as pickets spring up and shows shut down. With U.S. studio shows currently on the back burner, learning exactly what will be ready when has become a key question for execs arriving in town.

The stresses are different this time around, notes Dermot Horan, Director of Co-Productions and Acquisitions at Irish public broadcaster RTÉ. “The last time there was a strike, more of us were reliant on network programming,...
