Exclusive: Hit Israeli drama Fauda has landed one of its biggest casting coups to date.

Inglourious Basterds star Mélanie Laurent has joined the fifth season of the spy thriller. Renowned French actor and singer Patrick Bruel is making his TV debut in a leading role as a revered secret agent in “State of Alert,” a geopolitical thriller set in Paris.

The past always finds you – even if you’re “The German.”

“In my experience, you can’t ignore the past. You can hide it and lie about it, but it will always haunt you, you know?,” says Ronit Weiss Berkowitz, who co-created Lionsgate’s show with Moshe Zonder – known for “Fauda” – and producer Assaf Gil.

Season five of Fauda, the popular Israeli action drama, is set to start production at the end of April, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Wednesday.

The returning cast and storylines for the latest season remain under wraps. yes Studios, which handles the action series’ international distribution, said a new season of Fauda is expected to premiere on yes TV in Israel in early 2026.

That will be followed by a worldwide launch on Netflix, where the first four seasons of Fauda streamed. The upcoming season of the action thriller will be shot in Israel as well as in unspecified foreign locations where the Fauda team will go abroad on a private mission.

A return for production for Fauda follows the Israeli film and TV industry being mobilized in the wake of the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israeli by Hamas terrorists.

Spearheading a new strategy to grow an international slate, Israel-based Yes Studios has picked up “Haze,” an Icelandic crime series produced and created by Sigurjón Kjartansson.

The eight-part drama stars Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, whose acting credits include “Succession” and “Game of Thrones.”

Produced by Kjartansson’s banner S800, “Haze” has already been commissioned by Icelandic broadcaster Ruv. Filming will begin this Summer for an expected delivery in 2026.

“The Boys” star Tomer Capone is set to play a besotted suitor in a new romantic comedy series from Keshet International titled “Save the Date,” Variety has learned.

Starring comedian and “Dancing With the Stars (Israel)” winner Adi Havshush in the lead role, “Save the Date” follows the story of Dassy, a wedding planner who finds herself in a relationship slump after her longtime partner makes a shocking revelation. Turning to her grandmother for comfort, Dassy reluctantly agrees to take part in an ancient spell to summon her one true love – except instead of one, her overzealous bubbie manages to conjure up four suitors who set out to win Dassy’s heart.

“With a high-stakes wedding to organize in just two weeks for her high school nemesis, Dassy must navigate this romantic chaos and decide which man – if any – leads to her own happily ever after,” reads the synopsis for the six-part limited series.

Candle Media, the fledging media company backed by private equity player Blackstone, is undergoing a restructure in order to cut costs.

Founded in 2021 by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, the venture made several splashy acquisitions – including Reese Witherspoon’s production label Hello Sunshine – at the offset. Flash forward three years, and free-spending content buyers have cratered back to earth (along with their individual stock prices).

Variety has confirmed that Mayer and Staggs have moved to consolidate their production businesses into two verticals: live-action production will now fall under Sarah Harden, CEO of Hello Sunshine, who will also retain her title at Witherspoon’s shop; and animation will now exist solely within Candle’s profitable MoonBug, the label behind family juggernaut “CocoMelon,” which airs on Netflix.

Details of cost cuts and potential job losses were not immediately clear. Mayer and Staggs first disclosed the new structure at a Semafor event last week.

Candle Media, the entertainment company backed by private equity giant Blackstone and headed up by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, is reorganizing around two divisions, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The internal changes at Candle Media, first reported on by Semafor on Tuesday, will see animated series folded into the company’s children’s media company Moonbug Entertainment, which launched in 2018. Moonbug, which was acquired by Candle Media in 2021, creates and distributes Cocomelon and the series Blippi.

A second division, Candle Studios, to encompass live action content, will be led by Hello Sunshine CEO Sarah Harden. “I’m thrilled to take on an expanded role within Candle Media, supporting the growth of these incredible business units and identifying new avenues for growth. I am so proud of what we have built at Hello Sunshine and excited to continue in my role as CEO,” Harden said in a statement.

Veteran producers Koby Gal Raday (The Band’s Visit, On the Spectrum) and Ilda Santiago (Concrete Jungle) are teaming up with Brazil’s Mymama Entertainment and Germany’s Beta Film to launch a new international production company, Janeiro Studios, that aims to produce high-end TV and indie feature films out of the Latin America and beyond. Koby Gal-Raday will serve as CEO, and Santiago will be managing director.

The company has the backing of Beta Film, one of Europe’s leading indie outfits, producers of Babylon Berlin and period romancer Sisi. Idan Amedi, star of the popular Netflix web series ‘Fauda’, has been released from the ICU after he was admitted for grevious injuries he sustained in the ongoing war in Gaza. He has now been shifted to the trauma centre at the Sheba Medical Centre in Ramat Gan city.

The Fauda star was a reservist in the Israel Defense Forces’ (Idf) and had been serving in the Combat Engineering Corps when he was hit by sharpnels across the body.

He has documented moments from the military service on his Instagram account and had said, “this is not a scene from ‘Fauda’ this is real life”.

He also added that he and his fellow soldiers were motivated by their concern for the victims of the October 7, 2023 Hamas massacre.

“May God and us avenge their blood,” Amedi said.

“Fauda” actor and singer Idan Amedi, who joined the Israeli forces to fight against Hamas in the wake of the Oct. 7 attack and was seriously injured on Monday, has come out of surgery and regained consciousness, Variety has confirmed.

The 35-year-old was airlifted to a hospital on Monday after being wounded by shrapnel while serving as an Idf reservist in the Combat Engineering Corps. He was interviewed shortly before being injured and spoke about the tunnels built by Hamas which his unit was working on. “We found kilometers of tunnels here, weaponry, even special weaponry. We’ve been busy the past two days trying to destroy it,” Amedi told a Channel 12 correspondent. He is still hospitalized and receiving treatment, but is now awake.

Idan Amedi, one of the stars on the breakout Israeli thriller Fauda, has been seriously injured while fighting in Gaza as a member of the Israel Defense Forces, according to local media reports and the show’s lead actor, Lior Raz.

Amedi, who’s played Sagi on Fauda since 2017, was wounded by shrapnel while taking part in an operation to destroy Hamas tunnels.

About an hour before Amadi was injured, N12 reporter Nitzan Shapira spoke to the actor in Gaza and the he said, “I’m fine, a little tired.”

Indian streamer SonyLIV has unveiled a slate of more than 20 new and returning shows for 2024 and is expanding its content focus.

Yes Studios, the Tel Aviv-based producer and distributor behind “Fauda,” has scored major deals on “44 Hours,” a documentary feature about Gil Avni, a healthy 33-year-old father of two who was diagnosed with cerebral edema and miraculously recovered.

The feature-length documentary has been acquired by Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. and by Nrk in Norway for its linear channels and VOD platform. The feature version has also been licensed to DocEdge Virtual Cinema, the year-round viewing platform that supports the influential Doc Edge Festival in New Zealand.

“44 Hours” garnered hit ratings on Yes TV earlier this year, and ranked in the Top 10 titles on Netflix in Israel. Yes Studios handles worldwide distribution for the documentary.

“44 Hours” tells the moving journey of Avni, who was rushed to hospital after becoming suddenly ill. Pronounced brain-dead and given only a few hours to live, Avni said goodbye to his family and friends.

Matan Meir, a crewmember on hit Netflix series “Fauda,” has been killed in action during the Israel-Hamas war, the show’s production team have confirmed.

The Times of Israel reported that Meir, along with four other Israeli soldiers, was killed after encountering a booby-trapped tunnel next to a mosque in Northern Gaza on Nov. 11. Meir was 38 years old.

“We are absolutely devastated to share that one of our very own Fauda family members, Matan Meir, was killed in action in Gaza,” the Fauda team posted on Instagram. “Matan was an integral part of the crew for all 4 seasons of Fauda. The entire cast and crew are completely heartbroken by this tragic loss. We would like to extend our condolences to Matan’s family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”

The co-creator of the popular Netflix show Fauda, which depicts the conflicts and challenges of a fictional elite Israeli special forces unit, once had an idea for a storyline in which hundreds of Hamas terrorists infiltrate Israel and overwhelm a village. But, as Avi Issacharoff told a reporter, he decided not to go with it because “it sounds crazy” and wouldn’t be realistic.
