Israeli Film and TV Industry Halted as War With Iran Escalates: ‘It’s Heartbreaking to Be an Israeli Artist Today,’ Says ‘Tehran’ Writer
Image
Already weakened in the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, Israel’s once vibrant film and television industry has been halted as producers and filmmakers cope with the escalation of war with Iran.

Many of them, who are based in central Tel Aviv, have had their lives turned upside down and their homes damaged. Since the Islamic Republic of Iran initiated its retaliative military action against Israel — following the latter’s attack on Iran’s nuclear program — on June 13, around 350 missiles have been fired in Israel, killing at least 24 people, according to estimates by the country, which is under a state of emergency through June 30.

“Right now, nobody is working, all the industry in on hold. We’re waiting for things to calm down,” says Adar Shaffran, the head of the producers’ association in Israel. He points out the onslaught of strikes is more “frightening than all the other times” that...

The Terminal List: Dark Wolf: Cast, Plot, and Everything We Know So Far
Image
The Terminal List isn’t over yet, and we’re getting a prequel series to the Prime Video thriller.

Buckle up because this video series takes us way back — okay, maybe not way back, but it does take us back a few years before the plot of The Terminal List.

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming prequel series The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.

(Justin Lubin/Prime) How Did the Terminal List Season 1 End?

The end of The Terminal List Season 1 offered a plot twist, a sad death, and left out some vital information seen in Jack Carr’s novel of the same name.

As it turns out, James Reece’s best friend, Ben Edwards, is at the center of the conspiracy that Reece is determined to dismantle, and therefore, Edwards’ name is added to Reece’s list of people to be killed.

Keshet Intl.’s Atar Dekel, Elephant’s Sandra Ouaiss Break Down Propulsive TF1 Espionage Thriller ‘State of Alert’
Image
Closing a remarkable circle, TF1 espionage thriller “State of Alert,” starring legendary French singer-actor Patrick Bruel in his first major TV work, will world premiere March 27 at Series Mania.

The red carpet affair, featuring other cast and crew, will take place at the very same festival where Keshet Intl. head of drama Atar Dekel, having put through initial development, pitched the series as an Israeli project way back in 2018.

A fast-paced thriller set between Paris and the spectacular white-sand Negev Desert in Southern Israel, “State of Alert” kicks off with a taxi 43 kilometres outside Paris. Anatoly, a Russian journalist, is called on his cell-phone. When he answers, the taxi stops, on a railway crossing. The taxi doors lock, as a train thunders towards the car.

The assassination almost certainly involved software developed by Israeli intelligence services which can send a virus through a cell-phone call to take control of a car.

French Actor Patrick Bruel on Making TV Debut in Spy Thriller ‘State of Alert’ Helmed by ‘Tehran’ Co-Director for Keshet, TF1 (Exclusive)
Image
Renowned French actor and singer Patrick Bruel is making his TV debut in a leading role as a revered secret agent in “State of Alert,” a geopolitical thriller set in Paris.

The thriller, based on Dov Alfon’s bestselling novel “A Long Night in Paris” (“Unité 8200”), was produced by Elephant International with Keshet International (“Rough Diamonds”).

Slated to premiere later this year on TF1, “State of Alert” was directed by Dan Sachar, who notably worked as a second unit director on 36 episodes of “Fauda,” and co-directed episodes of “Tehran.”

Striking a similar chord as Netflix’s “Zero Day” with its timely techno plot and geo-political themes, “State of Alert” sees Bruel playing Israeli spy Zeey Abadi who travels to Paris for a tech summit where he embarks on an unexpected investigation to connect the dots between stolen software, the death of a Russian journalist and a mysterious disappearance three days...

There’s No Escaping the Past in Lionsgate’s Espionage Thriller ‘The German’ Starring Oliver Masucci: ‘You Can Hide It and Lie About It, But It Will Always Haunt You’
Image
The past always finds you – even if you’re “The German.”

“In my experience, you can’t ignore the past. You can hide it and lie about it, but it will always haunt you, you know?,” says Ronit Weiss Berkowitz, who co-created Lionsgate’s show with Moshe Zonder – known for “Fauda” – and producer Assaf Gil.

It certainly haunts Uri (Oliver Masucci), a family man and Holocaust survivor recruited by Mossad for a mission in Germany.

“He never wanted to speak about his past. He thought all we have to do is look forward to the future and forget what we have gone through,” adds Weiss Berkowitz, also behind Netflix’s “The Girl from Oslo”. Her parents – just like Zonder’s – were survivors as well.

“As a child, I had a father who was silent. He would never talk about it – my mother never stopped.” Zonder’s mother “never spoke about it at home.

“Vol 2 Of Tanaav’s Season 2 Maintains The Gritty Momentum” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Like the first season, the second season of Tanaav is a beast of its own. Authentic in look and speech, Tanaav doesn’t look like an adaptation, of the Israeli series Fauda. The terror contexts are smartly changed and localized. The characters do not waste time in allowing us to get to know them. Their jobs are well-planned from before.

In these final episodes of Season 2 Tanaav constantly feels tenable and credible. The action is never compromised on. The interaction between the Indian officers and the terrorists draws out that disturbing element of moral ambiguity—who is right and who is wrong—which navigates the plot through choppy waters.

There is a refreshing thehrao (calmness) in the plot, even in its most exacerbated moments. Among the actors, Maanav Vij continues to be sullen and angry at everyone from himself to his father(Kabir Bedi, a little off-key). Vij manifests the...

Hollywood’s Israel Divide Intensifies: Susan Sarandon, Roger Waters and More Speak Out on Boycotts, Blacklists and Secret Dossiers
Image
In mid-October, “Fauda” producer Liat Benasuly fired off an email to a group of nearly 100 people who had recently converged at former Paramount chief Sherry Lansing’s Los Angeles home. Attendees included “The Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik and singer Montana Tucker, and the topic at hand was one rarely discussed outside of similar informal gatherings — that Israeli content creators are increasingly becoming pariahs in the global marketplace. As a result, the next hit series like “Fauda,” “Homeland” or “Euphoria” could die on the vine. In the email, Benasuly issued a dire warning and solicited donations for a newly formed 501(c)(3) dubbed Friends of Israeli Film & TV Producers Association.

“As you may know, a significant number of our investors and partners have paused their collaborations with Israeli storytellers and producers since October 7th,” she wrote. “Most projects in our industry now face a funding gap of approximately 20-30%. This...

The Other ‘Oz’: An Israeli Documentary You’ll Likely Never See
Image
The 1,500 guests who arrived at the Beverly Hills Temple of the Arts on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills on a balmy mid-October evening had to pass a squadron of armed guards, go through a metal detector, and have their IDs checked before taking their seats inside the Saban Theater.

The security was a fitting prelude to what they were about to see on the screen, the American premiere of Oz’s List, The Journey of Oz Davidian, an Israeli-made documentary about the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel that ignited the current Middle East conflict.

The one-hour, made-for-tv Hebrew language film follows the story of a 53-year-old farmer and lawyer — his name is pronounced O-zehz — who put his own life on the line to save some 120 young Israelis who scrambled for safety as hundreds of Hamas terrorists shot, raped, tortured, killed and took hostage anyone in their gun sits at what...

“Season 2 Of Applause Entertainment’s Tanaav Continues To Be Gripping, Relevant” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Heads will role, tides will turn and the fugitive terrorists will find their nemesis.

I like the way the series makes room for the families to have their say. There is a chilling clarity in the narrative in the way it identifies the two sides and then leaves them to their devices. Tanaav2 gets it terror-dynamics right from the start. It’s not just the families of the Indian officers and the terrorists who suffer, even friends and acquaintances are not spared.

Image
Updated with official details and exec comment. Candle Media, which launched in 2021 with backing from private-equity giant Blackstone, is restructuring its operations in response to broader changes in the streaming sector.

The company has issued a press release confirming some of what had been reported by Semafor on Tuesday morning. (See earlier details below.)

Candle Media Cuts Costs: Hello Sunshine CEO Sarah Harden to Oversee All Live-Action Production
Image
Candle Media, the fledging media company backed by private equity player Blackstone, is undergoing a restructure in order to cut costs.

Founded in 2021 by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, the venture made several splashy acquisitions – including Reese Witherspoon’s production label Hello Sunshine – at the offset. Flash forward three years, and free-spending content buyers have cratered back to earth (along with their individual stock prices).

Variety has confirmed that Mayer and Staggs have moved to consolidate their production businesses into two verticals: live-action production will now fall under Sarah Harden, CEO of Hello Sunshine, who will also retain her title at Witherspoon’s shop; and animation will now exist solely within Candle’s profitable MoonBug, the label behind family juggernaut “CocoMelon,” which airs on Netflix.

Details of cost cuts and potential job losses were not immediately clear. Mayer and Staggs first disclosed the new structure at a Semafor event last week.

Image
Candle Media, the entertainment company backed by private equity giant Blackstone and headed up by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, is reorganizing around two divisions, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The internal changes at Candle Media, first reported on by Semafor on Tuesday, will see animated series folded into the company’s children’s media company Moonbug Entertainment, which launched in 2018. Moonbug, which was acquired by Candle Media in 2021, creates and distributes Cocomelon and the series Blippi.

A second division, Candle Studios, to encompass live action content, will be led by Hello Sunshine CEO Sarah Harden. “I’m thrilled to take on an expanded role within Candle Media, supporting the growth of these incredible business units and identifying new avenues for growth. I am so proud of what we have built at Hello Sunshine and excited to continue in my role as CEO,” Harden said in a statement.

Tomer Capone Talks Evolving Frenchie For Season 4 Of ‘The Boys’, What’s Next After The Superhero Satire Ends & Navigating Life As An Israeli Actor
Image
Exclusive: Tomer Capone has long been a household name on Israeli screens, having worked on a number of successfully exported TV shows such as Hostages, political thriller Fauda and When Heroes Fly. He won an Ophir (equivalent to an Oscar in Israel) after he was handpicked by Natalie Portman for the romantic lead in her directorial debut A Tale of Love and Darkness. But when he was cast as series regular Frenchie (or Serge) in Amazon’s hit series The Boys, he was catapulted into the mainstream. His depiction of Frenchie, a former assassin with a murky past who is mired by deep childhood trauma, and the character’s heartfelt relationship with Kimiko (played by Karen Fukuhara) has offered audiences moments of respite from the superhero satire’s often dark, violent and lewd storyline.

With the newest instalment of The Boys set to drop on Prime Video on Thursday and...

Agents & Producers Debate Pay Deals And Why Creatives Need Better Financial Chops — Berlinale Series Market
Image
Pay deals in the U.S. and the streamer reset’s impact on international TV development were among the topics at the opening panel of the Berlinale Series Market this morning in Europe.

During the panel at the EFM event, Gersh partner Roy Ashton described that while production costs have gone up significantly over recent years, writer pay had not kept up with the inflation. He suggested indie producers, writers and agents should collaborate more to ensure packages lead to better financial deals when they approach streamers or studios.

Ashton noted that the model behind Netflix’s hit action series The Night Agent, which has been viewed tens of millions of times on the service, meant its writing team did not receive more than originals shows launched at the same time that performed far worse. Creator Shawn Ryan last year gave an interview in which he said anyone assuming he...

An Israeli Representation Panel and a Palestinian Solidarity March Will Hit Sundance at the Same Time
Image
On Sunday, January 21, in Park City, nonprofit organization Jew in the City is hosting a panel discussion at Sundance that aims to debunk what it says are tropes about Jewish people and Israel in the media. Just across town, shortly after that panel begins, a group of protestors will gather to show their solidarity for Palestinians.

The panel discussion kicks off at 11:30 a.m. Mt at The Box at The Ray Theatre; the protest begins around noon in front of the Filmmaker Lodge on Main Street. Both sides say the timing is a coincidence, but after more than 100 days of conflict in Gaza after Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, the two events represent a microcosm of the debate and political fervor that has defined Israel and Palestine for a millennia.

The Jew in the City panel wants to take on the taboo topic of Jewish racial dynamics and break...

Film Review: King Khat (2023) by Uri Marantz
Image
Fasten your seat belts and put your flashiest sunglasses on before boarding on Uri Marantz' train to the glitzy world of drug-fuelled funfair based on a true story about a man who got away with it all. Before you get tempted to draw any parallels to Walter White, a loveable but fictive character created for the popular TV series “Breaking Bad” starring the one and only Brian Cranston, hold your horses: the man whose name was changed to Gabi (Oshri Cohen) to protect his identity, is really like you and me. Furthermore, unlike Walter, he didn't find a way and means to produce a known drug to earn a significant amount of cash, instead he invented a legal psychoactive drug from Cathinonec, a completely new substance, through his knowledge of chemistry and the need to feed his own personal beast.

King Khat screened at Tallinn Black Nights

Hollywood’s Latest Accessory: Military-Grade Security
Image
Like the rest of the world, Hollywood is rattled and on high alert following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed at least 1,400 people and saw the abduction of hundreds of hostages into Gaza. In its wake, attention has turned to beefing up security among Hollywood’s Jewish community.

“We’ve had a sharp increase in requests from our Jewish clients,” says Kenneth Bombace of Global Threat Solutions, which services billionaires, stars and Fortune 500 corporations. “They’re afraid they could be a target.”

The crisis comes amid a backdrop of already heightened antisemitism — both worldwide and within L.A. The Anti-Defamation League released a study in March that found recorded incidents of anti-Jewish hate in L.A. had increased 30 percent in 2022 over the previous year. (In total, there were 237 such incidents in the L.A. area, including 143 of harassment; 86 of vandalism of businesses, synagogues and schools; and eight incidents of assault.

“Your Silence Is Considered A Stand”: Screenwriters Guild Of Israel Slams WGA For Staying Quiet Over Conflict
Image
The Screenwriters Guild of Israel (Sgi) has slammed the WGA for its silence over the conflict raging in the nation.

Sgi Chair Nadav Ben Simon is understood to have contacted the guild’s 600-strong member base yesterday with a statement, which has also been posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The statement, which can be read in full below, blasts the WGA for failing to “find in their hearts enough courage to speak out against a terrorist organization that is currently holding 200 hostages, some of them toddlers and babies, snatched from their cribs as their mothers were raped in the same room in front of their eyes.”

“Your silence is considered a stand,” adds the statement. “It is a shame that a professional writers’ guild cannot reach a consensus and find the words to condemn an act of terrorism, an act of unprovoked crime against humanity, against innocent civilians, women, children,...

Anti-Defamation League CEO: How Hollywood Can Help Israel While It’s At War (Guest Column)
Image
The co-creator of the popular Netflix show Fauda, which depicts the conflicts and challenges of a fictional elite Israeli special forces unit, once had an idea for a storyline in which hundreds of Hamas terrorists infiltrate Israel and overwhelm a village. But, as Avi Issacharoff told a reporter, he decided not to go with it because “it sounds crazy” and wouldn’t be realistic.

If only that were true.

On Oct. 7, what was seen as “crazy” to some of world’s most creative screenwriters came to life in 22 kibbutzim and villages across southern Israel. Hamas terrorists infiltrated by air, sea, and land with one intent: To kill as many Jews as possible. By the time they were driven out, more than 1,400 people were dead — 1,200 of them civilians, and 30 of them Americans. Nearly 200 people, including babies, the elderly and the disabled were kidnapped and taken to Gaza, a war crime and a moral travesty.

Kimmel Says Trump Is Angling for the ‘Nobel Piece of S—‘ Prize After Israel Comments (Video)
Jimmy Kimmel
Jimmy Kimmel thinks Donald Trump’s recent comments about Israel may make him eligible for an international award, though not any award the former president would want.

“He’s really angling for that Nobel Piece of S–t Prize,” the late night host said Thursday night.

Kimmel started his opening monologue by saying that Trump “addressed the horrific attack on Israel by attacking Israel.” In his speech, the former President said Hamas wouldn’t have attacked Israel if his own election wasn’t “rigged” — a lie he’s repeated since he lost to Joe Biden — to calling Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant a “jerk.” He also complained about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and had some complimentary words about Israel’s enemies in Lebanon.

Trump’s many comments have been so heated that on Thursday Israel’s minister of communications Shlomo Karhi called them “shameful.” “We don’t have...
