Exclusive: In a competitive situation, 20th Century Studios has won rights to Test Drive, an original action spec from Matt Venne, to be produced by Safehouse Pictures.
While plot details are under wraps, sources said Venne secured a healthy mid-six against seven figure deal for his script. The spec had no talent or director attachments and caused a stir on the back of its concept and writing alone, in a scenario not too commonly seen these days.
Director of Development of Safehouse, Austin Bowman, found the spec. We’re told Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce.
Currently staffing on Showtime’s Dexter spin-off series Dexter: Resurrection, Venne is a prolific genre writer who previously adapted Stephen King’s Bag of Bones as a limited series for A&e. He sold his series Cruel Summer, based on the same-name novel, to Legendary TV, with David Goyer boarding to produce, and also...

More than just a series set in the Monsterverse, focused on Titan creatures such as Godzilla and other MUTOs, Apple TV+’s new series “Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters” focuses on the more human/familial aspects of the universe that spans over many decades.
The main thread of the series is the story of two siblings learning about their father’s secret life and his ties to a mysterious organization called Monarch. They end up discovering much more than they anticipated in regard to their father’s research, new Titans, and their tie to the origins of Monarch.

We recently sat down for an exclusive interview with “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” producer Tory Tunnell to talk about her word on the series. Tunnell’s husband Joby Harold is also an executive producer on the series. Together both Tunnell and Harold run the production company Safehouse Pictures.

Last year, as the industry was looking to lift itself out the pandemic’s purgatory at the box office, SXSW lit the wick on A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, which wound up dynamiting the 18-34 hipster moviegoer set in what became the highest-grossing indie film of 2022, the best ever for the New York-based distributor, and now a potential Oscar Best Picture winner.
As such, it’s often been said that SXSW has been a place to launch big studio horror titles and comedies before genre-friendly crowds rather than sell them and discover frosh talent; it’s here where eventual Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton first made a big splash with the Brie Larson drama Short Term 12. Still, that slow rhythm has never deterred sellers from utilizing the Austin festival as place to launch fresh talent directly to a zeitgeist demographic, away from...

There’s a euphoria among film sellers and buyers as SXSW finally convenes Friday in Austin, Texas after a three-year pandemic shutdown.
With the last two editions of the Sundance Film Festival being virtual, and the hybrid edition of TIFF seeing reduced capacities, few industry execs, and a muted atmosphere, SXSW marks the return to packed, receptive audiences; actual live pulses which can trigger good reviews and social media wattage, culminating in what some believe could be an active sales market here in Texas’s capital.
SXSW has a knack for programming comedies, genre, and genre-twisted features; titles which are best experienced by a reactive audience. Sellers previously told Deadline that virtual viewing of such fare at recent fests doesn’t really help their cause. While SXSW is enforcing vaxx cards and mask-wearing indoors, screenings will be at full capacity. In 2019, SXSW drew a reported 73K attendees alone to the...

It’s hard to believe Zoe Kazan, who gained notoriety for the 2012 fantastical love story Ruby Sparks and earned an Emmy nomination for HBO’s Olive Kitteridge, is already experiencing something of a creative drought in her career.
As Kazan explains, it’s the sad reality that actresses over 30 face in Hollywood. “I had so many more auditions at 23 than I do at 33,” she tells Et by phone. “We, in our culture, tell stories about young girls and tell stories about mothers. There’s a desert in the middle.”
Even more limiting for the actress, who still passes for 16 in the Off-Broadway play Love, Love, Love, is the fact that she’s admittedly played the same ingénue part onscreen in the string of romantic comedies that followed Ruby Sparks. It’s thanks to “me looking demure and having big eyes and being kind of small and looking young,” she says.

Star Trek Beyond (Justin Lin)
After the pleasant fluff of its kick-off installment and the frog march of unpleasantness that was Into Darkness, the rebooted Star Trek film series finally hits a fun median between big-budget bombast and classic Trek bigheartedness with Star Trek Beyond. Does the franchise’s full descent into action, with only the barest lip service paid to big ideas, cause Gene Roddenberry’s ashes to spin in their space capsule? Probably, but in the barren desert of summer 2016 blockbusters,...

With over a hundred credits to his name, Adam Scott has become one of the most prolific comedic actors of the last decade, perfecting the duality of his nice guy/jerk persona to create some of the most memorable scene stealers in recent comedies. After early career credits that ran the gamut from Torque to Party of Five, Scott soon became a fixture of the Judd Apatow universe earning sizable parts in films like Step Brothers and alt-comedy television landmarks like Party Down, Burning Love, and beloved network comedies like NBC’s Parks & Recreation.
These days, he’s still as impossibly busy, starring in films like the last year’s dark Yuletide comedy Krampus, creating oddities like The Adult Swim Golf Classic, and producing notable indies like The Overnight and Other People through the production company Gettin’ Rad that he created with his wife Naomi Scott. And even as his public profile is constantly rising,...

Sophie Goodhart’s charming, low-key debut My Blind Brother is a deceptively emotional experience. It’s the story of a love triangle between a deluded megalomaniac, his unappreciated brother, and a young woman who believes that she’s being punished by the universe for her recent actions, but as cartoony as that potential scenario sounds, it’s very grounded.
The two brothers in this case are Bill (Nick Kroll) and Robbie (Adam Scott). Since becoming blind at an early age, Robbie’s life has become a series of athletic feats. As we begin, Robbie has just finished running a marathon, and hours later, he’s already planning to swim the length of a local river. He’s accompanied on all of these endeavors by Bill, his brother whose life has become defined by his need to be Robbie’s sighted guide.
Their life is significantly complicated by Rose (Jenny Slate...

Sasha Lane knew something big was going to happen to her. She couldn’t have predicted the details – being plucked from obscurity by filmmaker Andrea Arnold and chosen to star in her Cannes-acclaimed feature film “American Honey” – but she had an inkling of something special waiting for her.
Lane was still just a teenager when Arnold discovered her on a Miami beach smack in the middle of spring break and cast her in the free-wheeling opus about a hard-partying magazine crew. At the time, Lane was a student at Texas State University in San Marcos, taking classes in psychology and social work, but she felt like something was missing. And she also felt like something was going to change for her once she went to Miami.
“I went on that trip because something felt like it was missing and I was just so lost and kind of hopeless, but I had a feeling,...

Regular IndieWire readers know that prolific actor-director James Franco is a regular contributor. So when we had the opportunity to interview Nicolas Winding Refn for the Blu-ray and DVD release of “The Neon Demon” (September 27), we thought Franco was the right man for the job. Franco and Refn previously collaborated on a Gucci advertisement last year, but the following interview finds the pair journeying back to Refn’s early days and working their way toward the present.
James Franco: Your parents were filmmakers. Tell me a little bit about that — growing up and how you started. I also heard that you took your wife on a first date to see “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” So what I really want to know is how you started making films out of that kind of upbringing.
Nicolas Winding Refn: Well, how did it all start? I guess it started with television. I...

Rather than take the high-end prime specialty route with initial New York/Los Angeles dates, this week’s top two releases—Mira Nair’s well-reviewed “Queen of Katwe” (Disney) and Jocelyn Moorhouse’s less welcomed “The Dressmaker” (Broad Green)—both jumped to multiple top cities.
Two of the leading Sundance 2016 films – “The Lovers and the Despot” (Magnolia) and “Goat” (The Film Arcade”) took the national bookings with day-and-date Video on Demand strategy. A third, documentary “Audrie & Daisy,” debuted on Netflix along with some minimal unreported theatrical dates (to get it reviewed in the movie section and Oscar qualified).
None of these popped with particularly impressive grosses. No doubt some of the big titles ahead will go the more conventional route and score big results. But the lay of the land gets more complicated for art houses as both their exclusivity and theatrical-only patterns are at risk.

Most films are bound by a necessity for its lead characters to be depicted as likable individuals that audiences can root for. However, My Blind Brother dares not only to subvert that expectation across the board but to make perhaps its most unlikable figure the titular blind man played by Adam Scott. With her feature debut, writer/director Sophie Goodhart attempts to challenge the current politically correct social environment and, in doing so, reunites three comedic stars who have all appeared on NBC’s Parks and Recreation.
My Blind Brother – based on the 2003 short film of the same name created by Goodhart – centers on the rivalry between brothers Robbie (Scott) and Bill (Nick Kroll). After Bill shares a night of connection with a guilt-ridden woman (Jenny Slate), he is shocked to soon discover that she’s dating his blind brother instead. Think of the first word that comes to your mind when you hear the term “rom-com.” Got it? I bet it isn’t “shame.” Yet, when we spoke with Jenny Slate and Nick Kroll about their roles in Sophie Goodhart’s “My Blind Brother” (opening in select theaters today), that was one of the first words Slate used to describe the romantic dynamic between their characters.
Rose (Slate) and Bill (Kroll) are former one-night-standers who find themselves thrust back together when Rose starts dating his visually impaired brother, Robbie (Adam Scott). “They have a lot of joy and delight and they are trying to get each other’s attention, but then they’re both pushing away. It’s the regulation of that shame flow that I was interested in,” Slate said of the complicated dynamic at play.

“My Blind Brother” is a romantic comedy that spins around one central thesis: what if a blind person was a selfish prick? That’s the joke in the middle of the threadbare, laughless plot that brings together a quartet of immensely talented people — Nick Kroll, Adam Scott, Jenny Slate, Zoe Kazan — and sees them all (with the exception of the latter) playing variations of pathetic and pitiable. And it’s hard to tell if it makes the film better or worse that they all share such great chemistry and charisma together; “My Blind Brother” is certainly the best version of this script you’ll get thanks to the cast, but it’s also a painful viewing experience to see such potential so thoroughly wasted, and such magnetism dulled off.

Is there a current actor as skilled at modulating his charm levels as Adam Scott? Although he’s probably best-known for the offhand but immense likability of his TV roles on Parks And Recreation and Party Down, he’s been equally convincing as a hilariously loathsome alpha bro in Step Brothers and a buttoned-up cold fish in Sleeping With Other People. In My Blind Brother, Scott plays both sides of the fence as Robbie, who was blinded in a teenage accident and has dedicated much of his life since to charity work for other blind children. Perhaps not coincidentally, this charity work involves frequent displays of his athletic prowess, then giving faux-humble speeches that trade on his status as a local-news hero.
Having Scott play a blind man who’s both vaguely insufferable and also unassailable is an inspired notion and leaves the lovable underachiever role to Nick Kroll ...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Blair Witch ended up with $9.6 million to take second place and both Bridget Jones’s Baby and Oliver Stone’s Snowden ended up with around $8 million, so...

In an interview with Filmmaker Magazine, Dean Fleischer-Camp described the tone of his 2014 web series “Catherine” as “The New Banality.” With “David,” he adds yet another gem to his self-described banal canon.
The five-episode series premiered yesterday on Super Deluxe and stars Nathan Fielder (“Nathan For You”) as David, a recently-fired divorcee, as we learn from an uncannily accurate Tarot reader (Sally Berman). David’s vacantly concerned psychic tells him that he has a “black stone, like a rock, growing every minute” in his chest. If he doesn’t get rid of it, his body will de-compose in five weeks — hence the five episodes.

There’s this nutty old man who painted a huge Dharma on a huge sheet of paper and draws sparrows on tiny rice grains. Some may know him as Hokusai the painter, but his daughter, O-Ei, knows him as Tetsuzo.
A new trailer for Keiichi Hara’s animated coming-of-age tale, “Miss Hokusai,” has just been released, courtesy of Gkids and Japanese powerhouse Production I.G. The film follows the remarkable story of the daughter behind one of history’s most famous artists.
As all of Edo flocks to see the work of the revered painter Hokusai (voiced by Yutaka Matsushige), his daughter O-Ei (Anne Watanabe) toils diligently inside his studio. The latest trailer shows her as she begins to work on her own masterful portraits – sold under the name of her father – which are coveted by upper crust Lords and journeyman print makers alike.

I'm not the biggest Nick Kroll fan, but that's partially because he seems to be in the same acting mode all the time: total douche. (He plays a literal douche in Sausage Party and played a radio host character named The Douche on Parks and Recreation. It's sort of his "thing.") But this trailer for a film called My Blind Brother has him in a different gear, and considering it reunites him with two of his former Parks and Rec co-stars whom I love — Adam Scott and Jenny Slate — I think it's safe to say this won't be the same old thing from Kroll.
Sophie Goodhart directs this romantic comedy about two brothers, one of whom is blind, who fall for the same girl. It looks like a decent, lighthearted little movie, and we don't have long to wait to see if it's any good — the film arrives in theaters...

We’ve seen Adam Scott play the cocky jagoff sibling before (Step Brothers), and we’ve borne witness to Jenny Slate’s skill at playing relatably confused characters dealing with moral quandaries (Obvious Child). The trailer for My Blind Brother, though, offers a relatively new side of Nick Kroll. The comedian, whose characters usually ooze smarmy confidence, plays a likable schlub who is forever in the shadow of his over-achieving blind brother (Scott), with whom he winds up competing for the affections of the same woman (Slate). In his review of the film after viewing it at Tribeca, The A.V. Club’s Jesse Hassenger noted that “Kroll makes a surprisingly credible leading man,” even while lamenting some missed opportunities with Slate’s character.
