I’ve seen Tim Vine live a few times now, and happy to be counted as a fan of his stand-up work. Brendan Canty’s Christy won the best Irish film prize at the Galway Film Fleadh, as the 37th edition of the Irish festival drew to a close yesterday (July 13).

Christy is based on Canty’s short film of the same name and follows a 17-year-old after he’s thrown out of his suburban foster home and moves in with his estranged older half-brother in Cork.

Lionsgate’s Ballerina debuted in third place at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend as Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning reigned once more.

Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remained in first place after adding another £3.5m in its third week of play.

UK-Ireland box office takings were up 50% in May compared to last year; with year-to-date takings now up 20%, as cinemas continue the post-pandemic and post-strikes recovery.

Total revenue for May 2025 was £109.1m, 50% higher than the £72.7m from May 2024. Figures are from Comscore.

Cumulative gross for the year is now £455.5m, up 20% on £380.4m at the same point in 2024; and up 8% on the same stage in 2023.

Six of the last seven months have now shown year-on-year growth, giving further evidence of audiences returning to cinemas after a rocky few years.

Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” topped the U.K. and Ireland box office in its opening weekend, debuting with a strong £9.5 million ($12.9 million), according to Comscore.

Close behind in second place, Paramount launched “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” The latest instalment in the long-running Tom Cruise franchise, with $11.5 million. The box office benefited from a three-day holiday weekend, which also marked the beginning of the May half-term school holiday.

Warner Bros.’ “Final Destination Bloodlines” slipped to third but still held well with $2.2 million in its second weekend. The horror reboot has now reached $9.3 million. Universal’s “The Phoenician Scheme” debuted in fourth with $1 million.

“Thunderbolts*” landed in fifth for Disney, taking $781,138 to push its cumulative total to $20.1 million. It was followed closely by Warner Bros.’ “Sinners”, which grossed $461,938 this weekend, for a $20.5 million total.

Disney’s Thunderbolts* held the top spot at the UK and Ireland box office, on a weekend where takings were affected by warm weather across much of the territory.

In second place, Warner Bros.’ “Sinners” showed staying power, adding $2.5 million in its third weekend. The film has now reached a cumulative $14.1 million. Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie” slipped to third with $1.6 million in its fifth weekend but lifted its total to a towering $71.1 million, extending its reign as the year’s top-grossing title to date.

Finally. The best part of a decade into the life of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format, and we’re finally getting to the lower shelves of the video shop. Case in point, the Sylvester Stallone 1987 feature Over The Top, a film where Cannon Films paid Sly a fortune for a movie that’s ridiculously good fun. A decent double bill with Cobra, I’d suggest, although neither movie really performed at the box office.

Anyroad, Over The Top sees him playing Lincoln ‘Linc’ Hawk. He’s a very manly man, who drives a massive truck and also takes part in arm wrestling competitions. In fact, you can see the fridge magnet pitch: Rocky, but with arm wrestling. Give me Rocky with crown green bowls next.

Universal Pictures’ spy thriller Black Bag leads the way for new releases in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend as Warner Bros’ Opus and Studiocanal’s In the Lost Lands also open.

Film4 is considering the commercial potential of its slate “more than we have done,” said the division’s director Ollie Madden during an on-stage interview at Film London’s Upstream IP pitching event on March 4.

“In British independent film, we’ve had an internalised snobbery about being too commercial,” said Madden, speaking in conversation with Film London CEO Adrian Wootton.

As a Denver-area sports fan, I had more access than most to the outrage that arose earlier this week when the Denver Nuggets played their first game of the season on local broadcast channels. Directv Stream and Fubo subscribers were outraged that they had no access to the game, but at least one of those services is attempting to remedy the situation. Fubo announced today it has a new carriage deal with Tegna that will allow it to carry Ktvd in Denver, as well as Kfaa in Dallas and Kong in Seattle, giving fans more access to their favorite teams.

Key Details: Ktvd will carry 20 games from the Nuggets and Avalanche in Denver. Kong delivers non-national Kraken games to Seattle-area fans. Kfaa airs Mavericks games not appearing on national channels in Dallas.

The 2024 offseason has seen a multitude of NBA and NHL teams craft new broadcast and streaming arrangements to give fans more access to games. The regional sports network (Rsn) model is fast becoming untenable, and teams want to help meet fans where they are by giving them multiple ways to watch. The Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets can now be added to the list, as the two clubs announced on Thursday that starting in 2024 they’ll be available on a new streaming service, while several games from each will also be broadcast on local over-the-air (Ota) stations.

The Walt Disney Studios will become the first studio in 2024 to cross the $4bn threshold this weekend, fuelled by five hits including Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Metis Films, the UK company launched this year by former Altitude and eOne executive Ben Metcalf, has acquired UK-Ireland rights to Antonella Sudasassi’s Memories Of A Burning Body.

The second feature from Costa Rican filmmaker Sudasassi debuted in Panorama at the Berlinale this year, where it won the independent audience award. Metis will release it in UK cinemas at the end of 2024, having acquired it from Bendita Film Sales.

The drama explores how the memories of three women who grew up when sexuality was taboo, are channeled through one 65-year-old protagonist.

Thriller prequel A Quiet Place: Day One heads the openers at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 660 cinemas through Paramount.

That figure is up on the 526 sites for 2018’s A Quiet Place, which began with £2m from 526 sites at a £3,788 site average.

It is also an increase on the 561 sites of 2021’s A Quiet Place Part II, which was one of the first major releases following the long cinema closures at the start of that year. Part II started with £2.25m at a £4,012 average, providing an impressive increase from the first title in the challenging theatrical climate.

HBO has boarded Lions (working title), the next series from Baby Reindeer creator and Screen Star of Tomorrow Richard Gadd, and will co-produce the series with the BBC. 

Gadd will write and executive produce the 6x45 episode drama series, which will span almost 40 years from the 1980s to the present day, covering the relationship between two men from their meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults.

Lions will start production in Glasgow in early 2025.

Jason Yu’s Sleep and Brant Anderson’s The Strangers’ Case were among the winners at the 32nd Raindance Film Festival, which held its jury awards ceremony today in London.

Korean filmmaker Yu - a former assistant director to Bong Joon Ho - won the Discovery award for best debut feature with Sleep. The black comedy stars the late Lee Sun-kyun and Jung Yu-mi, in the story of an expectant wife who must stop her husband’s sleepwalking habits before he harms himself or his family.
