Movie score aficionados rejoice! The Future Ruins Music & Arts Festival is assembling a line-up of film & TV composers to perform their most celebrated themes, as the credo of the festival is “The Music Tells the Story.” Musical acts like John Carpenter, Danny Elfman, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Questlove and Goblin are among those included on the list of performances for the event. Salem Horror Fest‘s eighth annual event kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, and festival manager Leslie Adams‘ brief opening statement — which concluded with the above quote — assured attendees that the event remains steadfast in its mission to cultivate a safe, inclusive, and fun community for genre fans.

Opening with the well-worn quote “One riot. One ranger.” from which it takes its title, One Ranger the new film from action specialist Jesse V. Johnson quickly segues into a scene of Texas Ranger Alex Tyree tying up his horse before rousting a stereotypically drunken Native American fugitive.

That’s interrupted by a call to deal with a crew of bank robbers in an Atv, who’ve left a trail of dead lawmen in their wake. He manages to kill three of them, but the leader, former Ira operative turned killer for hire Declan McBride, makes it to Mexico.

That’s where British Intelligence, in the form of Agent Jennifer Smith, enters the picture. The Mexican authorities have arrested McBride, but won’t officially hand him over to the US or the UK.

Thomas Jane, best known for playing Frank Castle in The Punisher (2004), is stepping into the world of comics again. This time, he’s taking on a new role—not as an actor, but as the editor of a horror comic called The Lycan.

The six-issue series is based on a story by Jane and screenwriter David James Kelly (Robin Hood). The script is written by The Girl with All the Gifts author Mike Carey, with artwork by Diego Yapur, coloring from D.C. Alonso, and lettering by AndWorld Design. Cover art comes from Eisner-nominated artist Tim Bradstreet, known for his work on The Punisher and Hellblazer.

The first issue of The Lycan will be released on February 18 through Amazon’s Comixology Originals, partnered with Jane’s own Renegade Entertainment. New issues will follow on April 1, May 13, June 24, August 5, and September 16.

With nearly 200 horror films on Netflix at any given moment, there’s never a shortage of great films to induce paralytic fear. As a true fan of the macabre, that’s what you want, right? As Stephen King refers to a member of his unparalleled fandom, the Constant Reader craves that jolt to the soul.

Happily, Netlifx is delighted to scare you to your very core, night after sleepless night. I’m certain they’d like nothing better than to see you as their Constant Viewer. My apologies to Mr. King, but he cribs a lot himself, as he’s more than happy to acknowledge. Of course, when King borrows, it typically results in a towering achievement. Clowns were always scary but were never as terrifying until Pennywise entered the culture.

Two years ago, it was announced that Sam Claflin, who may be best known for playing Oswald Mosley on Peaky Blinders, Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games franchise, and Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones & the Six, had signed on to star in the supernatural thriller Bagman, from Hunger Games‘ home studio Lionsgate. The finished film received a theatrical release at the end of September, but it seems that few movie-goers noticed. Maybe Bagman will catch more attention now that horror fans will have the chance to watch it in their comfort of their own homes, as the film is set to receive a digital and VOD release this Friday, October 18th. IFC Midnight 10. Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014) kicks off our list with a turbo-charged adventure set in the Australian outback. Imagine a world where Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead—this is Wyrmwood.

Badland Hunters is the latest film starring action hero Ma Dong-seok, and that is bad news for Korea. He was in Train to Busan in which the country was overrun with zombies, and in Ashfall where a massive volcanic eruption laid waste to the entire Korean Peninsula. And the amount of property damage he wracked up in The Outlaws and its sequels The Roundup and The Roundup: No Way Out would bankrupt most insurance companies.

In the opening scenes, Seoul is levelled by a catastrophic earthquake as the military are about to arrest Yang Gi-su for the murders and human experiments he’s committed trying to bring his daughter back from the dead. The building collapses on him, but you know he’ll be back later in the film.

Horror Director Christopher Smith is getting ready to unleash arachnophobia-inducing horror-comedy madness in Spider Island. The project was announced today by Protagonist Pictures’ CEO Dave Bishop.

Spider Island “follows a group of social media influencers going to the launch party of a new luxury resort on a beautiful island. With deadly spiders.”

The film is written by Christopher Jolley (The Price We Pay) and David Quantick. Vertigo Films will produce the film, and Protagonist Pictures is handling worldwide rights, launching sales ahead of the upcoming American Film Market.

While the specifics behind these lethal spiders remain under wraps, we at least know that they’ll be handled via VFX.

Bradley Quirk, who has had previous stints with Brightstar and Altitude, is joining the Netflix U.K. film team, Variety has confirmed.

Quirk joins as manager, U.K. He is part of director, U.K. Mona Qureshi’s team. Anne Mensah serves as Netflix’s U.K. content vice president.

Quirk was previously with Brightstar Film and TV, the U.K. production outfit founded by producers Tanya Seghatchian (“The Crown”) and John Woodward (“Cold War”). Earlier, Quirk was with Altitude as head of development where he worked on the films “Calm With Horses,” “Rocks” and “The Girl With All the Gifts.”

In a previous stint with Pathe, he worked on “Philomena” and in a role with the BFI Film Fund, on “Welcome to the Punch” and “Broken.”

In 2019, Quirk served as executive producer on “Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans.”

Not many zombie movies have been nearly as successful, falling among the many films with the same themes, plots, and scare factor.

However, the break between the different Walking Dead shows is a great opportunity for fans to explore the zombie movies that stand out. Some of these movies deviate from the norm with an atmospheric angle, such as Cargo and Maggie. Others like ParaNorman and Dead Snow are a far stretch from the typical zombies. The unusual twists on these flesh-eating creatures prove there are still different stories to be told within this overused genre.

This week brings the release of M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, an adaptation of author Paul Tremblay’s The Cabin at the End of the World. The premise sees a vacationing family held hostage by four armed strangers that make harrowing demands under the claimed threat of an apocalypse.

This week also continues HBO’s compelling “The Last of Us,” an apocalyptic series based on the video game. The fourth episode will air this Sunday on HBO and HBO Max. Naturally, it feels apropos to continue the apocalypse theme in this week’s streaming picks.

While horror’s apocalypse starter often falls to zombies, these five apocalyptic movies showcase other means of humanity’s doom, from Gates of Hell to extraterrestrial takeovers.
