Ok so it's a bit slow but don't let that put you off, it's gritty with empathy towards the main characters. It has political and moral undertones and we'll acted throughout.
Enjoyed this film more upon second viewing. In the last two years, I think I'm finally coming to understand that I need to be a dedicated consumer of the visual arts or I'm wasting everyone's time. The concept behind this film, the idea of focusing on a dimwitted sick kick rather than his confident partner, is a great idea. Lefty Brown (Bill Pullman) grew on me as the film progressed. I'm not sure he created his own luck but he definitely had it in spades. Joining him is the two-gun rig sporting Jeremiah (Diego Josef) and a grief stricken alcoholic Marshall Tom Harrah (Tommy Flanagan). Blondie, the cool and competent killer for hire provides a challenging adversary but I found his departure from the film is a wee bit anticlimactic. Overall, The Ballad of Lefty Brown is a good modern western and will keep genre loving fans, like myself, very content. Right on.
Really good Western with a twist..'The hero is the sidekick...don't see that often, if ever. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good flick to watch late night when your tired of all the modern movie genres...
Kick back and enjoy!!
If you like Western movies, I don't need to write anything to convince you to watch this. Look on the casting here and you already may be swayed by that alone too. Good ensemble to say the least. And it also feels like a classic western. The hunt and the pursue of justice! And the morals being thrown down the drain (well or whatever was the equivalent of that in the Western world) for a better "future" for all (read making rich folk richer).
Now there is a lot that is not being said and things can be interpreted any way you like or however you see things - worldview and all that. A lot of action and quite a lot of Western talk (which I find amusing, but also really like melody). If that sounds like fun to you, the technical aspect and all other aspects really enhance the experience you're going to have watching this

Seldom ever do a review here. Had to cause I've NEVER thought of Bill Pullman as above average actor. This has to be his best as an actor in his career in my opinion! Kudos to Bill!

- TriviaLewis Pullman who plays Billy Kitchen is Bill Pullman's son in real life.
- GoofsAlthough Lefty does not appear to be left-handed -- he shoots right handed, rides right-handed (holding the reins in his left hand so that his right hand is free), and wears his sidearm on the left side, butt forward, so that he can draw it with his right hand -- he could have gotten the nickname for some other characteristic or habit.
