      [closing words]

Jeremy Paxman: History isn't made by great men. But sometimes a man or woman may so come to express the spirit of the age that they *become* great. Winston Churchill was such a figure. He looked a bit like a bulldog and, when the nation needed it, he expressed the determination of a bulldog. Sure, he was a chancer, an egotist, a workaholic and sometimes a bit of a charlatan, but in this age of political miniatures, there is no-one who can hold a candle to him. For the sake of the nation we must hope that the old cliché about never seeing his like again isn't true because, one day, we may need his like again. But in the fifty years since his death, there has been no sign of such a figure.
