Film Acquisition Rundown: Fox Searchlight Buys ‘The Old Man and The Gun,’ Grasshopper Film Picks Up ‘Bronx Gothic’ and More
Keep up with the wild and wooly world of indie film acquisitions with our weekly Rundown of everything that’s been picked up around the globe. Check out last week’s Rundown here.

– Fox Searchlight will acquire the U.S., Canada and U.K. rights to to “The Old Man And The Gun,” Deadline reports. Director David Lowery’s drama stars Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek and Danny Glover and begins shooting on April 3.

Based on a true story, the film centers on bank robber and 17-time prison escapee Forrest Tucker (Redford). Affleck plays a detective obsessed with bringing Tucker to justice while Spacek plays Tucker’s love interest. The film is produced by Conde Nast Entertainment Wildwood Enterprises and Identity Films.

Tom Quinn and Tim League’s new distributor Neon has swooped on Us rights to Aaron Katz’s crime mystery Gemini in a deal with ICM Partners.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions financed and retains international rights.

Lola Kirke and Zoë Kravitz star as a personal assistant and her Hollywood starlet boss whose relationship is tested by a shocking crime. John Cho also stars.

Mynette Louie produced Gemini with Sara Murphy and the recent best picture Oscar-winning producer of Moonlight, Adele Romanski.

The film is presented by filmscience and is a Syncopated Films and Pastel Production in association with Rough House Pictures.

‘MidWest WeirdFest’ announces its full 2017 line-up
MidWest WeirdFest has today announced its full 2017 program. The inaugural film festival – a cinematic celebration of of all things fantastic, frightening, offbeat, and just plain weird – will take place March 3-5, 2017 at the Micon Cinemas Downtown in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Says festival founder and director Dean Bertram:

MidWest WeirdFest’s programmers have put together a world class program of genre and underground cinema. From some of the freshest horror and sci-fi feature films on the fest circuit today, through underground oddities to fascinating and frightening documentaries. There’s also three short film blocks, including a hilarious program curated by Uwec graduates Andrew Swant and the Found Footage Festival’s Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher.

Some of the festival’s highlights include:

Friday FrightNight: Three terrifying horror feature films. Starting with the festival’s spectacular opening night film, the high-octane and high body count Happy Hunting. Followed by the blood drenched Tonight She Comes.

Program announced for Sydney’s 10th annual Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Film Festival
Presented by Deadhouse Films, The 10th annual A Night of Horror International Film Festival, and Fantastic Planet: Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival, screen simultaneously at Dendy Cinemas Newtown from November 24 to December 4, 2016. Says festival director Dean Bertram:

The 10th annual festival is going to be our biggest event yet. Featuring over 100 films, several international filmmaker guests, multiple parties and a horror filmmaking master class; Sydney’s genre fans and filmmaking community are going to be treated to eleven days of the best and freshest horror, sci-fi, and fantasy from around the globe.

The festival opens on Thursday November 24, with the Australian premiere of the international festival hit Peelers, plus a Q&A with special international guest: Canadian director Sevé Schelenz. And in keeping with the spirit of the bloody hilarious film, the screening will be followed by a “zombie and strippers” themed after party.
