    Amateurish nonsense

Utterly ridiculous entry into an otherwise excellent series. A preposterous cast of characters, ridiculous trapped-in-an-isolated-mansion setup, fan-fiction level plotting and dialog, histrionic acting by the guest stars, and a reveal among the dumbest I've ever seen in detective fiction.

Written by Lol Fletcher, who also wrote "The Three Tools of Death" (electroshock girl) and "The Face of Death" (mask party), which were also pretty bad and over-the-top.

    Fun episode

Marooned in the country Father Brown, Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy come across the Hotel Cuba where the exotic Madame Chania is organizing a weekend of hedonism for three wealthy playboys. Two prostitutes are expected but one is found dead and soon the guests are being murdered. Madame Chania would seem to be responsible but Father Brown uncovers a case of hidden identity and exposes a murderer who kills purely for the pleasure of it.

A complete bonkers episode featuring a group of characters who are totally bonkers. I enjoyed it thoroughly, the location setting is grand, the fact the murders are random added to the mystery and the twist wasn't something I would have guessed. Mrs McCarthy's expression when seeing the naked man wearing just wearing a fez and saying "salam" was hilarious.

    The Lair of the Libertines

This is a very racy episode with some serious dark and sinister undertones, although by the end it is rather fantastical.

Father Brown, Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy end up being stranded. Not to worry Lady Felicia knows someone nearby only to find out that the mansion has organised a weekend of hedonism run by the exotic Madame Chania for three wealthy men who are expecting sex, gluttony and much much more.

However one of the two prostitutes expected to arrive is found dead and then the guests start dying.

Roni Ancona plays the notorious Madame who ends up being the main suspect. Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy end up being objects of desire and Father Brown ends up running for his life.

The Most Ridiculous Episode of the Series So Far

Nothing makes sense, the acting, the plot, the motivation for the murder, how Father Brown figures it out. Someone who was in charge of making sure this episode followed a logical flow ate an opium cake instead. The only redeeming quality of this episode is that it is so bizarre to watch, that you have to watch it. You can't look away, like a bad car accident. There's sort of a humor to it, even though I think it's mostly unintentional. Definitely recommend watching it while eating an opium infused cake, or maybe at a "so bad it's good" viewing with friends and alcohol. Embrace your inner hedonist, but first look up what that actually means because no one who watched this episode did that's for sure.

    Quite bizarre. But, good.

I could definitely see this not being everyone's cup of tea. But, I watch British detective mysteries strictly to be entertained. And this was entertaining. Everything flowed very smoothy in this astoundingly bizarre setting. This couldn't have been an easy story to bring to the screen and make it believable being how crazy it was. But, they pulled it off.

I thought the male actors were all very good portraying a bunch of eccentric weirdos. Rae Baker's as Mimi acting I thought was very forced being near horrendous. Ronni Ancona as Madame Chania nailed her part.

This was a wild episode for sure.

Near the start, a man is target shooting with a pistol. Just as he finishes shooting, the camera shows from further back, and a woman is walking from the mansion towards where the shooting was happening. But the woman is coming from the direction that the shooter was aiming. It's a wonder she wasn't shot. Also, it's not a good idea to shoot towards a building with people living there.

The man and all the other guests are established as people who enjoy doing as they please without regard to anyone else, including their safety. Some of them even get a kick out of scaring the others. The risk of missing the target and striking a living person is something at least one of them would enjoy.
