Needless to say that I had never heard about the 2019 horror comedy "Puppet Killer", prior to sitting down to watch it here in 2024. But with it being a horror comedy, then of course I had to sit down and watch it, regardless of not knowing what I was in for here.
Writers Kevin Mosley and Lisa Ovies put together an enjoyable script and storyline. I have to say that I was genuinely entertained throughout the course of the movie. I just don't understand the part of about the grown ups being in school, where they supposed to pass as college students or high school students? It just made zero sense to me.
I was only familiar with actor Richard Harmon of the entire cast ensemble in the movie. However, it should be said that they had a great cast ensemble, and the actors and actresses definitely put on good performances and brought the characters and story to life on the screen in a nice manner.
The killer puppet, Simon, is just a hilarious addition to the movie. It added a lot of flavor and comedy to the movie. And I will say that Simon more than makes it well-worth sitting down to watch "Puppet Killer".
"Puppet Killer" pays homage to the classic horror movies of the 1980s and 1990s, and does so in an enjoyable way, and with Simon thrown into the mix, what is there not to love about "Puppet Killer"?
If you enjoy horror comedies, then you definitely should take out 83 minutes of your time to sit down and watch this 2019 movie from director Lisa Ovies.
My rating of "Puppet Killer" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Well, it's a stupid little slasher flick. Pretty much on par with what one would expect. Not terrible.. but nothing you should rush to see either. It not funny in the laughter type of way.. it's MAY be funny in the "heh" type of way.. MAY cause a grin once in a while but that's it.
The cast are all supposed to be high school students...
But are all CLEARLY over 35, if not much closer to 50.. and one guy couldn't even be bothered to shave his full beard to portray a high school student. I mean, for f's sake.. at least make the guy shave if he wants the part.
Aleks Paunovic (the lead "student") is 54 years old as of this writing..... FIFTY FOUR years old.. but the audience is supposed to believe he's a high school student??? Did they pass out free hallucinogens at the screenings???
Now, okay.. so they cast who they thought was right for a part.. but then WHY have the opening settings relate to high school? There was no need for that. They could have been work colleagues.. that would have only required changing the setting for 3-4 scenes near the beginning and perhaps rewriting a few lines - nothing too difficult. And doing so would have made casting 40 year old actors make MUCH more sense -- because CLEARLY none of the cast is anywhere close to high school age.
Because of this poor casting.. after the opening sequence.. when they show the high school portion.. it just seems so ludicrous, so utterly ridiculous that it immediately sets the film in an "oh this is just f'n dumb" position it must crawl out of... it tried.. got close.. but meh.. don't think it ever did.
If this was the "best of Hexcon".. all I can say is Hexcon must really be bad.

I saw this film at Nightmares Film Festival and it blew me away. Did not expect this! I haven't laughed so hard in a horror comedy like this before. The writing, casting, DIRECTING, scoring, EVERYTHING flowed together so well. Can't wait to see more from this crew! I'm now a Puppet Killer fan for LIFE.
Made an account just for this.
Caught this at hexcon in Calgary and it blew my mind. They played a bunch of awesome films but obviously this one stood out! It's not just that the killer is a puppet, but this movie has so many callbacks to classic horror and kinda makes fun of normal horror tropes, but it's played so seriously that it works so well!
All the kills are practical effects, which i love, and some of the dialogue is just perfect. They have probably my favourite example of a "meta" character with the Curtis character, who is flat out the guy that basically goes "don't go in to the basement or you'll die"
Sounds like this was super low budget, but it looks better than most of the crap on netflix and such. So funny, and the filmmakers are so nice. It's a really indie film and i hope it heys released soon!
Also, Paunovic rules! It has Julius from van helsing!!!!

One of the worst idiotic films ever. Don't waste your time. Horribly written and executed. So many good puppet films out there, THIS IS NOT ONE!
