This film contains many similarities to Josh Cisewski's "Ambition", Ryan Hall's first collaboration with Josh. Both films portray a young man (Joe in Ambition, John in To Be a Man) struggling with his life's purpose, and both get very aggressive when something comes in their way. In both films Laura Smith plays the love interest (Avery in Ambition, Lily in To Be a Man). Lastly, there is a character named Lily in both films. In Ambition Lily is Joe's younger sister; in To Be a Man Lily is John's ex-girlfriend.
