I really enjoyed this movie for the sake of enjoying a movie, it kept me interested throughout so i am not going to pick it apart. I thought Sheena did an excellent job with her character, especially that scene while teaching and with the monsignor; the others in the film did well also.
After the hour and 5min mark where the "demon" was introduced it became sorta far fetched but overall I thought it was a great film to see.
OMG, as a Christian, I was hoping this would be in the vein of of CS Lewis: evidence in the existence of God through reason. Ever eaten something that had turned bad and no amount of mouth rinsing will remove the taste? That is what sitting through thus horribly crafted movie is like. Its so bad, I can't get it out of mind. Was this movie funded by atheists to make us Christians look bad? What was the director thinking lining up the angry nuns and the priests like dark figures from a horror movie? Are there really Catholics who think they are messengers for God wrath and Hell? If so no wonder church attendance is down. Angry harbingers if death? Is that really the message? From the poor casting, the bombastic monsignor's trembling rage is better suited to a Boris Karloff movie. What was the casting director thinking selecting the lead? The oratory skills of the lead actress would be surpassed by anyone on the Dallas cheerleading squad. They needed a lion in that role and they settled for a petulant mouse. And that fake English accent by the scientist in the hell house? Cringeworthy. And the horrible writing, This movie might be salvageable if it were not for the cringe worthy lines the poor actors had to deliver and then there is the laughably incongruent music track. Someone with good taste in music delivering up this horrible movie on a golden platter. I recommend that anyone who worked on this movie, expunge it from your resume.
Garbage. Worst movie ever? Yes, worst movie ever. Horrible. The idea behind the story line was interesting, but the execution was terrible. Poor acting and cinematography combined with a complete lack of subtlety.
It is a modern Mephistopheles story- every time, the scientist made a decision for her tough and cold research and with that against compassion and the needs of her loved ones, she lost one of them. And each of those decisions was goaded on by the ever present Mephistopheles, played by THE PERFECT actor for the role, impersonating several people along the way. As soon as I saw him in the initial lecture she gave- and he sat there, smooth, smug, perfectly fitting in, the intelligent student, bit baby faced but still with calculating, bemused condescension watching her, diabolical quality in his perfect smile, ready to pounce- and then provoked her first open challenge of the church by filming her, involving the Monseigneur, getting her pride hooked - I knew, this will be a story about Mephisto's temptation and her ultimately"selling her soul" because he just looked, exuded that role, had "Mephistopheles" written all across him. He is a fantastic choice! And sure enough, every time she decided against her doubts and compassion and for being tough, her research, results and with that, for her vanity, one of her loved ones got taken - by the hatchet, that showed up briefly somewhere, when they died. I never thought that old story could still be integrated into modern life in such a meaningful and fantastically crafted way. Awesome movie, I am so impressed, and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved the story.
