Good setup that doesn't really go anywhere

Fabian is a young German doctor. He heads to Lisbon to win back his girlfriend, Doro, and slowly but surely he succeeds. Just when things are going really well, the reason they first split up resurfaces. He is jealous to the point of paranoia, thinking she is having an affair with just about any man she is friends with. Over time his jealousy gets worse and worse...

Had heaps of potential. The setup was good as was the initial plot development. The indications of Fabian's jealousy and paranoia were very well done, weaving his minds-eye view of things into everyday situations.

However, all this didn't really go anywhere. The movie seemed set up for a massive twist and/or a very dramatic conclusion, but none of these came. Ended pretty tamely and without adding anything in the way of profundity.

    Disappointing, ultimately.

    Initial(ly)

No pun intended - I did not know what the title stood for. Of course the names of the characters, or rather the 2 first letters of their names are just put together. I also had no idea what the movie would be about - and was quite nicely surprised. To anyone going Frodo or anything like that based on the title: I reckon you can do your own no pun intended review - I decided not to go with that one, so feel free to do so yourselves.

As you can see by my rating I really liked this ... and it was not so much about the nudity (you can't be easily offended or have issues with flesh and sexuality) ... but because of the psychological factor. Talk about (Fa)Doomed ... there is also a scene where the movie goes explicit ... late in the game and it makes sense in the story and how it has evolved ... you may dislike the guy - but it is his nature ... he can't help it ... the movie stays true to that and to itself - or should I say: faithful? Again no pun intended ...

    • Trivia
In an interview with Deutschlandradio Kultur, director Jonas Rothlaender said that with "FADO" he primarily wanted to look at the male emotions. He was interested in what happens when jealousy develops from a small suspicion to great anger. The many sex scenes were important. "Because the relationship also finds a language in sex. Especially when it comes to Fabian's ideas about Doro's sex with other men. Then the film also becomes pornographic."
