Writer-director Nastasya Popov finely threads a needle in her debut feature “Idiotka,” dipping into the chaotic life of Margarita (Anna Baryshnikov), an aspiring fashion designer with a barely functioning sewing machine in the tight-knit Russian district of West Hollywood. Margarita seems as much a work in progress as the eternally under-construction house she lives in. She’s been making ends meet by attaching tags taken off well-known designer labels onto her own work, then pawning them off online. But the clothes themselves show plenty of personality under the false advertising; accordingly, Popov delivers a boisterous tale of a woman coming into her own, told with real humor and heart.
Like one of Margarita’s dresses, there is at least some repurposed fabric in “Idiotka.” Margarita struggles both with asserting herself in a brutal industry and with stepping out of the shadow of her feisty family, but the comedy is all...

Matthew Broderick is a true star of stage, screen and television who first came to moviegoers' attention over four decades ago in the thriller "WarGames." He then triumphed in comedies, dramas and musicals both on stage and in film. Add to that his long-term marriage to Sarah Jessica Parker, and there's a lot for him to celebrate.
For his stage work, Broderick has won two Tony Awards (as Best Featured Actor for 1983's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and as Best Actor for the 1995 revival of the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"), as well as an additional Best Actor nom for 2001's "The Producers" for a performance that he brought to the screen in the 2005 film. In 1993, he was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his supporting performance in "A Life in the Theatre." Michelle Williams is currently starring on Broadway in Death Becomes Her and someone sent her fan mail to the theatre, but thought she was the other Michelle Williams!
The Destiny’s Child singer shared a video of herself reading a letter she received from a fan in Germany, who thought she was the Oscar-nominated actress.
“I received this letter, and I can’t wait to dig in and tell you guys what it says. Alright, it says, ‘Dear Michelle Williams, I hope this letter finds you in great spirits. My name is Philip, and I have been an avid fan of your incredible performances in both film and theater,’” Michelle began.
While Michelle is best known for singing, she has made several Broadway appearances and has appeared in some movies too. But as the letter continued, it was clear the person intended it for the other Michelle.

A lot of the best art is provocative, and movies are no exception, but not all provocations are created equal. Some great movies don't age well over time and offend newer generations. Others are meant to offend for all time, and they do. Controversial movies tend to push boundaries, but they don't always do it intentionally. In spite of the controversy, however, or at times because of it, they may still be worthwhile watches.
Below is a collection of movies that, for one reason or another, provoked controversy, if not at the time of release, then subsequent to it. There's racial content that reflected some mindsets at the time and doesn't -- or at least shouldn't -- any more, envelope pushing sexuality and violence, and satire both ahead of and behind the times. In every case, there are still merits to the artistic achievement, even if the controversial elements are disqualifiers.

Netflix’s Adolescence is a crime thriller of extraordinary power and rare insight, transforming into something completely unexpected by the final moments of its heartbreaking finale. The scene, anchored by a towering performance of vulnerability from the great Stephen Graham, hits with the force of a wrecking ball, leaving you shattered.
Yet, somehow, the sequence manages to piece the viewer back together. Graham, simply put, is a revelation. He is outstanding in this year’s Hulu series A Thousand Blows, embodying a powder keg of intensity — wavering between rage and tenderness — yet deeply wounded and achingly human.
I’m confident you won’t see a better performance all year.

We have ourselves a race! The Oscar contests for Best Actor and Best Actress got especially interesting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday because the winners disagreed with another industry peer group honor, the BAFTA Awards. But who tends to win the Oscar under those circumstances, the SAG winner, the BAFTA winner, or someone else entirely?

Timothée Chalamet had a mic-drop moment at the SAG Awards on Sunday, singing his way to a Best Actor win for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet, who was in second place in the Gold Derby odds, beat Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Daniel Craig (Queer), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).
"I know the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me," Chalamet said during his acceptance speech. "The truth is that this was five-and-a-half years of my life. I poured everything that I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan — a true American hero. Exclusive: Weeks after the indie film crowd left Park City, the box score on the Sundance Film Festival marketplace looks like this: a splashy auction and $15M WW deal by Neon on Together to start, followed by a handful of deals that moved sluggishly, with numbers that got smaller as leverage shifted from sellers to buyers. A chorus of naysayers followed, though it bears noting that after a slow Toronto Film Festival deal pace last fall, the just completed Berlinale marketplace was also a snore. No matter how splashily festival markets showcase acquisition titles, they can’t make buyers spend money on them in this moment of extreme uncertainty. Does Sundance have fundamental flaws, or did the festival merely reflect that low ebb and possibly a new risk-averse normal in the shifting sands of the indie business?

Spoiler alert: The crazy, unpredictable Oscar season? Still crazy. Still unpredictable.
Fresh off a one-two punch weekend where “Anora” cleaned up at the PGA and DGA Awards, the BAFTAs decided to stir the pot with their own take on the race. If history tells us anything, it’s that BAFTA can be either a crystal ball or a red herring.
In 2024, every BAFTA winner (except for visual effects) went on to win the Oscar, making it the most predictive year in recent memory. The year before, however, BAFTA charted its own path — only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers repeated at the Oscars. So, with the final Oscar voting closing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, let’s break down the key takeaways from BAFTA’s curveballs and what they could mean for Hollywood’s biggest night.

Most readers recall the night of February 26, 2017, when Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty took to the stage at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony. That was the year "La La Land" was nominated for a whopping 14 Oscars, tying the nomination record of films like "Titanic" and "All About Eve." In the Best Picture category, it faced off against "Arrival," "Fences," "Hell or High Water," "Hacksaw Ridge," "Hidden Figures," "Lion," and "Manchester by the Sea." They were all defeated (most would argue rightly) by Barry Jenkins' subdued queer drama "Moonlight."
Of course, when Best Picture was announced, a mixup was revealed. Beatty and Dunaway were handed a backup envelope for Best Actress by mistake. Emma Stone had just won Best Actress for "La La Land," but the "spare" envelope was still backstage. When Beatty opened it in front of an audience of billions, he looked a little confused. He showed the envelope to Dunaway,...

BAFTA nominee Daniel Radcliffe (the Harry Potter franchise) and Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) are set to take the lead roles in the Vietnam War thriller Trust the Man, which Deadline reports will be directed by Will Graham, whose credits include an episode of Daisy Jones & The Six (which earned him an Emmy nomination). The film follows Agnes (Victor) as she navigates a traumatic event that continues to impact her life. While her friends and the world have moved on, she is still left behind, navigating the difficult journey of coping with her past.

In “Sorry, Baby,” the defining moment of Agnes’ adult life happens off-camera, but it haunts nearly every other scene in the movie. A standout of the U.S. dramatic competition at Sundance, Eva Victor’s disarmingly funny, slow-to-unfold debut is less a film about sexual assault than it is a serious look at the process of rebuilding after such an experience. Sympathy merges with satire, and acceptance leads to questions (rather than the other way around), as Victor herself embodies a bright young woman who probably thought of herself as a dozen things — witty, independent, a sure-to-inspire future professor — but now must add “survivor” to that list.
A tall, willowy 20-something, Agnes is a brilliant literary mind who must rewrite everything, including her understanding of the word “brilliant,” after the professor (Louis Cancelmi) who’d freely offered such compliments makes a pass at her. “Do you think that’s why...

You get an Oscar, you get an Oscar, every Best Picture nominee gets an Oscar? Not always. For most of the past decade when the Oscars used the sliding scale in Best Picture, most, if not all, of the Best Picture nominees every year walked away with at least one Oscar. Six years ago, all eight Best Picture nominees were Oscar winners. Five years ago, eight of the nine films in the top category claimed a statuette. Four years ago, seven of the eight nominees were victorious.
But ever since the Academy returned to a set 10 nominees in Best Picture three years ago, that high conversion rate has been more difficult to come by. Three years ago, four Best Picture nominees left empty-handed. Two years ago, five were goose-egged as most of them — The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, Tár, and Triangle of Sadness — had the misfortune of facing seven-time...

Movies to Watch if You Liked A Real Pain: “A Real Pain” marks Jesse Eisenberg’s sophomore directorial feature. As an actor, he has worked on several projects, many of which show him as a majorly anxious individual. His latest project puts him in a similar lane, where he appears just as physically reserved. However, the narrative unpeels so many layers of his personality that it is hard to put him in a single box. The same is true with his co-star, Kieran Culkin, who appears lively and impulsive but has a darker emotional core.
As Eisenberg’s character describes, Culkin plays someone who ‘lights up a room and then shits on everything inside of it’. The film is a buddy tragicomedy about their oddball pair. Eisenberg plays a buttoned-up family man who is facing life’s challenges, presumably, in stride. Culkin plays a free-spirited 30-something man who is stuck in a limbo state.

Hollywood is heading up the mountain for what’s possibly one of the final Sundance Film Festivals to be held in the posh ski-resort town of Park City. It’s a place that’s hosted its fair share of all-night bidding wars, where films ranging from “Reservoir Dogs” and “Napoleon Dynamite” to “Brooklyn” and “The Big Sick” landed massive deals before going on to box office, and in some cases, Oscar glory. But it’s also been the setting of some frenzied sales that didn’t always pay off, like “Happy, Texas”or “Blinded by the Light.”
Sundance has already announced the festival is considering decamping Utah for Ohio or Colorado in 2027. Even if it does stay in the state, the focus of the festival will shift to Salt Lake City, which is better positioned than Park City to host the crowds that the celebration of movies attracts. There’s never a shortage of hidden gems in the Sundance Film Festival’s short film program. (Last year’s lineup even featured former First Daughter Malia Obama’s directorial debut.) A scan of the selections for 2025 revealed one notable project that marks a new big-screen collaboration for a Hollywood couple: Oscar-winning filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan and Emmy-nominated Succession star J. Smith-Cameron.
Writer-director Alex Heller’s Debaters is a 10-minute short that will screen this week in Park City, Utah, when Sundance rolls out Jan. 23-Feb. 2. It premieres on day one, Jan. 23, as part of the Short Film Program 1 at Library Center Theatre. The film is set in a debate chamber where affluent high school students argue a bill on minimum wage in an effort to impress two working-class adult judges, played by Lonergan and Smith-Cameron. In case anyone needed a reminder that “Film Twitter” and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are not populated by the same people, Emilia Pérez, the polarizing French-directed, Spanish-language musical about a trans Mexican gangster, landed a field-leading 13 Oscar nominations on Thursday morning. That tally — encompassing noms for best picture, director, actress, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, international feature, cinematography, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, sound and two for original song — smashed the record for a non-English-language film (previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which had 10 each) and is just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).
Is Jacques Audiard’s Netflix film unbeatable? Of course not. Plenty of people have issues with the film, including many members of the Mexican and trans communities, who find it offensive, and critics and general audiences,...

Taylor Sheridan may be best known for Yellowstone but he cracked screenwriting on the big screen with films like Sicario and Hell or High Water. Featuring themes and genres that would later on define his style, the latter was a neo-Western starring Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine, which gave Sheridan his first Oscar nomination.
While the film was also nominated in several other categories including Best Picture, the year had tough competition with the likes of Damien Chazelle, Mike Mills, and more being strong contenders. Sheridan lost the Best Original Screenplay Award to Manchester by the Sea, and to be honest, that was deserved.

John Krasinski has come quite a long way since his days as Jim Halpert on The Office, breaking into directing and taking on more dramatic material. One of his most surprising roles came in the form of playing a variant of Marvel's Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Despite how brief it was, it was a dream come true for those who had been fan-casting him in recent years. Even though he won’t be returning for the upcoming Fantastic Four film, it wouldn’t be the first time he has missed out on such a major opportunity with Marvel. We’ve all got our favorites - The Others, The Sixth Sense, Fight Club, Seven - no matter which plot twist you’d consider to be your favorite in cinema, there’s certainly no lack of options. Right now, one of the wildest moments of “didn’t see that coming” has found a new streaming home, with Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island currently streaming on Paramount+. The fourth movie to come from the collaboration between the famed director and one of his favorite actors, Leonardo DiCaprio, the psychological thriller is a rush of adrenaline from beginning to end. As one might expect from a Scorsese-helmed flick, the rest of the call sheet isn’t too shabby either, with Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac), Ben Kingsley (Schindler’s List), Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) and Max von Sydow (The Exorcist) supporting DiCaprio in a fine piece of cinema.

Clint Eastwood’s riveting drama Sully is currently streaming on Max, and the film’s sudden boost in popularity is a sharp reminder of just how underrated this project has been. The movie tells the real-life story of a commercial pilot named Captain Chesley who makes an emergency landing on the Hudson River after his plane is damaged during a flight. It’s an extremely tense and gripping story about how split-second decisions can define our lives, and it remains one of Clint Eastwood’s best-directed movies.
And yet, despite the level of talent both in front and behind the camera, Sully is still a hugely underrated movie that doesn’t always receive the recognition that it deserves. Although the film was popular on release and gave a much-needed boost to Eastwood’s reputation as a modern director, it seems to have exited the cultural consciousness in recent years -...

Howards End is a sharp, funny series that fans of Joe Wright's 2005 film adaptation of Pride & Prejudice need to see. Pride & Prejudice made audiences swoon for Matthew Macfadyen long before Succession showed just how slimy and off-putting he can be. Howards End is like the missing link between Pride & Prejudice and Succession. The BBC One/Starz series was adapted from E.M. Forster's classic novel by Oscar-winning screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) and directed by Hettie Macdonald, who helmed several Doctor Who episodes, including the acclaimed "Blink." Hayley Atwell (known for Captain America: The First Avenger) gives a strong performance as the lead, but the best part of the series is Matthew Macfadyen in a role that's absolutely perfect for him. If your favorite parts of Pride & Prejudice were Mr. Darcy's more awkward stumbles, you need to watch this series.

Universal Pictures’ blockbuster musical “Wicked” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review, the organization announced on Wednesday, in addition to taking home the directing prize for Jon M. Chu and a special award for the collaboration of stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Over the last 40 years, most of the winners of NBR’s best film has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture, with the exception of films like 1998’s “Gods and Monsters,” 2000’s “Quills” and 2014’s “A Most Violent Year.” In the 1980s, there were technically two misses with 1987’s “Empire of the Sun” and 1983’s “Betrayal,” the latter of which won in a tie with “Terms of Endearment.” So far this decade, Spike Lee’s war drama “Da 5 Bloods” (2020) is the only film to fail to achieve Oscar recognition. Colman Domingo has been part of the 2025 Oscars race for Best Actor for some time thanks to Sing Sing, and his first major win with the Gotham Awards is a telling sign of what is to come. After breaking through into the awards side of Hollywood with Rustin, Domingo's praised work in Sing Sing reviews once again vaulted him into contention for another Academy Award nomination. The 2010s were home to a high number of exceptional dramas that set the bar for thought-provoking and powerful thematic filmmaking through the soaring heights of the digital era. From striking biopics like The Social Network and The Wolf of Wall Street to gripping original stories like Parasite and Manchester by the Sea, there are countless top-notch drama films to choose from. However, the decade was far from flawless when it came to the dramas released, as there was also a wide variety of drama films that failed to meet the bar of quality.

Awards season never really ends. Even though the Oscars typically mark the conclusion of one season, the next has already begun by the time the Academy hands out those little gold men. Predicting awards has become a cottage industry in its own right, a way to gamify the race to the Oscars by determining who has the best odds of clinching the win on Hollywood's biggest night.
To predict these things accurately, pundits look at major film festivals, box office performance, and, eventually, precursor awards to see which films are gathering the right amount of momentum to carry them to awards glory. To gain this momentum, studios launch For Your Consideration (FYC) campaigns based on their strongest contenders that can push a film over the finish line. Earlier this year, the Oscars held its 96th awards ceremony, honoring the best that cinema had to offer in 2023. The nominees for the 96th Academy Awards feature a mixture of legendary figures with up-and-coming newcomers looking to commence their cinematic legacies. Seasoned veterans such as Martin Scorsese and Jodie Foster look to add more trophies to their cases, while first-time nominees such as Cillian Murphy and Lily Gladstone hope to enter the pantheon of Academy Award winners.
With a new Awards Season on the way, it's worth remembering that the Academy has its favorites. Case in point, Meryl Streep has accumulated 21 acting Academy Award nominations with three wins. That is nine more nominations than the next closest performer. Streep is one of cinema's greatest stars and her nominations are well deserved. However, the excessive praise aimed at actors such as Streep seems superfluous when considering all-time greats such as Barbara Stanwyck,...

Colman Domingo is in the Oscars 2025 Best Actor race, and he could accomplish something that hasn't been done since Denzel Washington did it seven years ago. While Denzel is firmly entrenched as a contender for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2025 thanks to his Gladiator II performance, his absence from the lead category leaves room for other actors to shine. The predicted 2025 Oscars Best Actor nominations include past winners and nominees, and Colman Domingo counts among the latter group.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has extended its first-look deal with Oscar-nominated producer Kevin Walsh and his The Walsh Company shingle, to continue to develop and produce original films and series for the service.
This is a sweeter deal, and positions Walsh to become a bigger supplier for Apple’s slate of originals. It comes after Walsh produced Apple Original Films’ The Instigators, which launched as the most-watched movie on Apple TV+; and the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon. Up next is another Apple original, Echo Valley, a Michael Pearce-directed thriller that stars Julianne Moore alongside Sydney Sweeney from an original screenplay by Brad Ingelsby. Produced by The Walsh Company and Scott Free Films, that film debuts next year.
Walsh is also in the middle of a potential sequel to The Instigators, sorting it out with Apple, director Doug Liman, co-writers Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean and Artists Equity partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Oscar winner Matt Damon has been one of Hollywood’s most reliable leading men for over two decades. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 23 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Though Damon and his childhood friend Ben Affleck became famous by writing their own ticket to fame and fortune with “Good Will Hunting” (1997), the pair had been acting for years before that film became an art house hit, even appearing together in “School Ties” (1992). But it was by returning to their native Boston to tell the inspirational story about a secret math genius (Damon) that put them on the map, winning them an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and bringing Damon his first Best Actor nomination.
