Tom Neal, Ann Savage, and Roland Varno in The Unwritten Code (1944)

Review by boblipton

The Unwritten Code

6/10

Escaped Nazis In America

A ship carrying POWs to America is torpedoed, and three men cling to a life raft: to pirsoners and an interpreter. Nazi Roland Varno kills the interpreter and pockets his papers, and when he wakes, lo! He's a Brit with a nice Trans-Atlantic accent. As he recuperates, he gets along with nurse Ann Savage, which doesn't please her boyfriend, Sergeant Tom Neal, but what can you do? Except that Varno goes around doing spy-like stuff.

It's the only directorial effort by dialogue director Herman Rotstein, and he does an adequate job on this Columbia B movie, aided by Burnett Guffey's camerawork and lighting. It's strictly B movie all the way through, but at 61 minutes, it doesn't have time to outstay its welcome. See if you can spot Blake Edwards.
