A very odd film to me as, on one hand, it is exceptionally well made - the acting, the made up country and its weird rules, the overall feel of the film; on the other hand, I could not really understand what this film is trying to say beyond the obvious gory and slightly amusing story. I'm not even sure there was anything beyond the story? Was it simply gore and weirdness for its own sake?
A couple come to the (poor dictatorial third world but sunny) island country of Li Tolqa for a holiday; they meet another couple, get into trouble and the guy ends up becoming a part of a drug induced murderous group of Westerners clearly too degenerate to enjoy anything even barely normal - they get their kicks from committing crimes and then seeing their clones being murdered as part of the unconventional criminal justice system in this country.
So, this group of Westerners come to Li Tolqa regularly to engage in killing and other debauchery, and locals seem to be ok with this as long as they are being paid. The message is clearly there for all to see but its a bit shallow, to be honest - we all know rich white people exploit natives in hot courtiers they go on holidays to, and its really unfair and awful. Apart from this, I cant really think of anything else to gain from the story.
First part of the film was interesting, but I found the second half tedious, as I quickly lost interest in what is happening as it was just a repetitive gore pile up. The characters were all completely unlikable and unrelatable, and I could not care less what was happening to them.
The whole film had the feel of an art show, exceptionally well made but not really engaging in any way. Sadly, I can't say it was particularly entertaining, either.
