‘One Piece’ Grabs Early Season 3 Renewal at Netflix
Jeff Ward, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero, Taz Skylar, and Iñaki Godoy in One Piece: A Série (2023)
Netflix will keep sailing the high seas.

The streamer has given an early season three renewal to its live-action adaptation of One Piece, announcing the pickup at an annual celebration of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga in Tokyo. The renewal comes several months ahead of the season two premiere, which is slated for 2026. That, incidentally, is much sooner than the season two renewal for One Piece, which came a couple weeks after the series premiere in 2023.

Additionally, Netflix announced that Ian Stokes will join Joe Tracz as co-showrunner on season three, which is set to begin filming later this year. Stokes wrote two episodes and was a co-executive producer of season one. Former co-showrunner Matt Owens departed the show in March; he and Tracz were co-showrunners on the second season, while Owens and Steven Maeda ran the first season.

Along with the renewal announcement, Netflix released a teaser for season...

Seth MacFarlane Says TV Shows Have Gotten Too ‘Pessimistic’ and ‘Dystopian’: ‘Give People Hope’
Image
Seth MacFarlane is calling for more positivity in the TV industry.

During a recent appearance on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast, the “Family Guy” creator discussed the abundance of “negative” stories in Hollywood, and said audiences need more movies and TV shows that “give people hope.”

“That’s why I did ‘The Orville’… because when I was a kid, Hollywood was providing that voice in various forms,” MacFarlane said. “There was a lot of hope, and some of the blame lies right here in this town. The dishes that we are serving up are so dystopian and so pessimistic.

For Paramount and CBS, the Redstone Era Ends With Little Fanfare and Diminished Assets (Column)
Image
For the Redstone clan, the end with Paramount Pictures came much as it began 31 years ago – victory achieved after a long, bitter and highly public fight over a Hollywood institution.

This time around, the win for Shari Redstone was securing the ability to sell Paramount Pictures, CBS, Paramount+, MTV, Nickelodeon and other legacy cablers to David Ellison’s Skydance Media. The battle came at great cost, especially for CBS.

Skydance paid about $8 billion in total for Paramount Global. In 1994 — after a 10-month slog of outmaneuvering rival suitors that include Barry Diller, QVC, John Malone and then-powerful telco BellSouth – Sumner Redstone...

Emma Thompson Recalls Donald Trump Asking Her on a Date the Day She Got Divorced
Image
Emma Thompson made a bold claim about Donald Trump asking her out on a date the same day she got divorced. On Friday, August 8, the Sense and Sensibility actress, 66, spoke at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where she was honored with the Leopard Club Award. Thompson recalled how the Potus asked her out the same day she finalized her divorce from Kenneth Branagh. As she recounted, Thompson was in a trailer on the set of the 1998 film Primary Colors when she answered a phone call. It was none other than the business mogul, 79, who simply said, according to the actress, “Hello, this is Donald Trump.” “I thought it was a joke and asked, ‘How can I help you?’ Maybe he needed directions from someone,” she explained, per The Telegraph. “Then he said: ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.

On Friday, Aug. 8, ESPN‘s First Take host appeared on the late-night show, during which he doubled down on “leav[ing] the door open” to a bold political bid in 2028. The NBA analyst confessed that he “can’t imagine” running for president. However, he acknowledged it is still a “possible” option for him. “Listen, life is good, man. I leave the door open,” he told Maher. “I can’t imagine myself doing it, but I haven’t ruled it out because I’m disgusted with what I’m seeing on the left.” Smith continued, “I look at the national voice for the Democratic Party. It is non-existent. As far I’m concerned, a damn construction worker could win the Democratic nomination right now, as bad as it is for the Democratic party. They better get their act together.

Ethan Peck Says ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Puppet Episode Will Be ‘Really Special’

“I can’t say anything” about Puppet Spock, Ethan Peck says of the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 episode. Yes, the most fun show on television is going to have a puppet episode in its penultimate season (the third is currently airing). And while Peck can’t say anything specific, he did tell TV Insider his reaction upon hearing about this episode. “‘What? Are you serious? That sounds totally insane. Are we actually going to do that?’ And that was the same feeling I had when we did the musical episode,” he admits. “I don’t see a lot of shows that take swings quite like that, big genre swings like that. So when it first started happening, it seemed like it would just be a rumor, it would never come to fruition. And when we heard about this, we were like, ‘No, come on. Really? That’s just crazy.

‘Supernatural’s Misha Collins on Getting Personal With Fans for His One Man Show
Image
The angel Castiel might have rusty people skills, a stoic demeanor, and deadpan sarcasm, but Misha Collins, the human actor behind Supernatural‘s forever third wheel, is charming and full of stories. It’s a natural fit, then, that Collins has created a one-man show, It Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time, which he tours around the country separate from the Spn conventions he does with costars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. Stops this year for A Good Idea include Oklahoma City, Austin, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, and Nashville. The 90-minute, alcohol-friendly evening is described as having “topics more suited to a therapist’s sofa than a public stage.” A warning: There might be more than a few d–k jokes. “I love telling these very personal stories that bring the audience into some real difficult, emotional terrain, while also having them belly laugh — and they laugh a lot,...

‘White Lotus’ Breakout Blames Old Actors With Plastic Surgery for Stealing Roles From Young Stars
Image
The White Lotus star Sam Nivola boldly suggested that old Hollywood stars with plastic surgery are stealing roles from hopeful young actors. During an interview with Variety published on Aug. 7, the actor behind Lochlan Ratliff in Season 3 of HBO‘s mystery-comedy-drama series, opened up about the state of acting. He bluntly pointed out that up-and-coming talent is having a difficult time breakout out in an industry riddled with cosmetic procedures allowing people to look decades younger. “The old movie stars are getting plastic surgery, and they’re looking younger and they’re staying young,” Nivola, 21, told the publication. “You have these really old people playing young roles. And it’s not giving any space for the young’uns to move in and make a name for themselves.” He added, “With all due respect to those people, one day they won’t be here anymore, literally. And they will have to create new stars.

Daytime TV Performer of the Week: ‘B&b’s Cassandra Creech Revealed Devious Doctor Character Is Also a Protective Mama Bear
Image
Hope surfaced that The Bold and the Beautiful‘s Liam (Scott Clifton) wasn’t going to succumb to his incurable illness when his physician, Dr. Grace Buckingham (Cassandra Creech), started acting suspicious. What was Grace hiding? Quite a bit, it turned out. Liam wasn’t ill after all. Grace lied to him that he was dying. The question remained, though: Why would she be untruthful about something so important? The answer was found in a mother’s deep devotion to her darling daughters. Grace may lose her medical license but Creech has earned TV Insider’s Performer of the Week honors for making us feel empathy for Grace, despite her wicked ways. B&b tapped into the history of the Buckingham family, specifically Reese’s (Wayne Brady) gambling debts, to explain why Grace did what she did. ‘Garbo, by Joan Crawford’ — Rare BBC Documentary Resurfaces: Here’s How to Watch in the U.S.
Image
In 1969, the BBC scored a coup. The network tapped none other than Joan Crawford, one of the largest (or larger-than-life) film legends to narrate a documentary — which the U.K.’s BBC Four is now unearthing on August 14 and 15 — about the largest legend of them all: Greta Garbo. Both stars had been under contract at MGM back in the ’20s and ’30s, during the heights of the studio system as well as that patricular studio. The two icons, however, barely crossed paths.

Garbo — an infamous recluse until her dying day — didn’t socialize with her fellow actors. Personal appearances were off the table and, even though she co-starred with Crawford in 1932’s Oscar-winning “Grand Hotel,” the two didn’t share any scenes. MGM actually had to composite a cast photo to make it appear like Garbo was ever in the room with more people than absolutely necessary:

On the set...

WGA Expels Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar for Strike Violation on HBO’s ‘The Sympathizer’
Image
The ripple effects of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike continue. On Friday, August 8, the WGA announced that Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar had been expelled from the union for writing the HBO limited series, “The Sympathizer,” while their fellow writers were picketing. This is not the first discipline action from the union in regard to the strike. Reportedly seven writers have been docked for violations.

The historic 148-day strike took up several months of 2023 — mostly simultaneously with the SAG-AFTRA strike — and resulted in a new contractural agreement between the writers and studios that increased wages, set standards for writers’ rooms, and included provisions for streaming residuals and framework for AI regulations. It had a significant impact on the Los Angeles economy, as well as the film industry at large, as studio lots sat dormant and theaters, networks, and streamers felt shockwaves in their release pipeline.

Chan-wook and McKellar’s...

NBC’s ‘Survival Mode’ Explores the Question, ‘What Would You Do’ During a Disaster?
Image
NBC‘s summer disaster docuseries Survival Mode goes beyond the attention-grabbing headlines and straight to the heart of the matter. Over nine episodes, NBC News crews interview ordinary folks, first responders, and loved ones who persevered in the face of utter tragedies — some caused by Mother Nature, some man-made (Amtrak 501 derailment on July 28). The upcoming August 11 episode on the Fort Worth Pileup is a bit of both. In February 2021 in Fort Worth, Texas, an unusually chilly winter freeze brought black ice onto a highway during a pre-dawn commute that resulted in a 133-car pile-up, six fatalities, and at least 65 injuries. “Everyone coming down the hill and around this turn [on the highway] couldn’t see it until it was too late,” showrunner Chris Cassel explains. “By the time the sun rose, it was just a scene of incredible devastation.” Telling their stories are survivors including Destiny, a young woman who was gravely ...

Pete Davidson Said Starry ‘SNL50’ Audience Was ‘Terrible,’ but Meryl Streep ‘Rules’
Image
NBC has announced that the 51st season of “Saturday Night Live” will hit the airwaves October 4, a date that is still nearly two months into the future. Meanwhile, its been about three months since “SNL” has graced us with a new set of hilarious(-to-mid) sketches, and last season was one of the series’ most eventful, since it was the 50th lap for the pop culture staple. During its half-centennial run, there was even a movie — about but unaffiliated to the series — about the making of its first episode.

The whole 50th ballyhoo led up to an all-star three-plus hour anniversary show that premiered Sunday (naturally), February 16. The audience was like an Oscar or Emmy night roster: Cher, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Zach Galifianakis, Jack Nicholson, Ayo Edebiri, Steve Martin, and Emma Stone, among many more. Meryl Streep appeared in her very first “SNL” sketch, for heaven’s sake.

It’s a question we’ve been asking since The Gilded Age first premiered in 2022, but now that Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) has married into British nobility, the time feels more appropriate than ever. Come on, who didn’t get Downton vibes from the Duke’s house?

Noah Wyle Shares Thoughts on the Possibility of ‘ER’ Reunions on ‘The Pitt’
Image
Noah Wyle may end up being the only former ER series regular to appear on The Pitt, but in a new interview, the actor says “never say never” to an onscreen ER reunion on the latter medical drama. “The success of this show has brought to our awareness that there’s some really high-profile actors that would love to come on our show, and it’s super tempting to want to go after them, but you run the risk of it being a little distracting,” Wyle told Variety. And any distractions would be detrimental to The Pitt’s mission of depicting the lives of healthcare workers in a broken healthcare system in a fractured American society. “One of the great things about Cathy Sandrich, our casting director, is she brings in these people that you may know that work, but you don’t necessarily bring their intended baggage to the...

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3 Easter Egg Fans Missed, According to Jenny Han
Image
The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 is filled with many obvious Easter eggs — but apparently, fans missed one of them in the form of a cameo from Jenny Han. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer of the beloved book trilogy alerted viewers to her nearly undetectable presence in Season 3, Episode 5 of the Prime Video show. “I do make a cameo in this episode,” Han, an executive producer for the series and director for Episode 5, told the publication. “It’s just my voice. The reason why I’m even saying it now is because I don’t think anyone’s going to pick up on it, it’s like the tiniest thing, but it made me laugh.” The episode titled “Last Dance” features many scenes narrated by Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) for the first time. By contrast, Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and sometimes Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) have narrated all the other episodes.

‘Only Murders in the Building’s’ Martin Short and John Hoffman Preview ‘Ripped from the Headlines’ Season 5
Image
There’s another murder brewing for “Only Murders in the Building,” which will return September 9 with Season 5 on Hulu. The mystery will surround (spoiler for those not through Season 4) the Arconia’s beloved doorman, Lester, who was found dead in the courtyard fountain in the waning moments of last October’s season finale.

When we last left the terrific trio — which includes Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage, Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora, and the once again Emmy-nominated Martin Short as Oliver Putnam — Oliver had just married the love of his life (in the previously mentioned courtyard), the actress Loretta (Meryl Streep). As for what’s to come now or how Short might be approaching Oliver in the fifth go around, the “Three Amigos” star insisted in an interview with Deadline that he doesn’t “analyze [himself] that way.”

“I don’t sit back and say, ‘You know what I’ve done with Oliver this season…...

Pete Davidson Says the ‘SNL50’ Audience Was ‘Terrible’: ‘It’s Just Famous People’
Image
Not just anyone could attend the recent Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special — tickets went to SNL alums and other Hollywood stars — and that star-studded audience made for a “terrible” reception to the special’s sketches, according to Pete Davidson. The comedian shared his thoughts on the SNL50 crowd on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday. “As you know from SNL40 — terrible audience,” Davidson told host Seth Meyers. “It’s a terrible audience ’cause it’s just famous people, and famous people only like themselves. It’s true! I’m guilty of this.” Meyers teased Davidson, saying, “I remember when [your pre-taped sketch] was playing, you were the only one laughing. We were like, ‘Oh, he’s coming in way too hot.’” In that sketch, Davidson reprised his role as the simpleton Chad, this time a stagehand at Saturday Night Live, as original SNL cast member Laraine Newman returned to Studio 8H.

‘Supernatural’s Baby: 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Sam & Dean’s Beloved Car
Image
“It never occurred to them that, sure, maybe they never really had a roof and four walls, but they were never in fact homeless.” So Chuck said of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) in the Supernatural Season 5 finale. That was because they had their 1967 Chevy Impala, affectionally referred to as Baby by Dean. That car was by their side for the big and small moments, heart-to-hearts, fighting monsters, even saving the world, and when they eventually ended up in heaven. And no other show could include an episode told entirely from a car’s point of view! (See where that episode landed on our Best Episodes list.) Below, check out seven fun facts. 1. Baby Had a Big Family Supernatural used nine different Chevy Impalas over 15 seasons, including one primary “hero” car, a couple of backups, a special cutaway for filming tight angles, cars for parts and several...

Bill Maher Goads Dr. Phil to Admit Donald Trump’s Redistricting Is ‘Some Bull’
Image
Bill Maher recently goaded Dr. Phil McGraw to admit that Donald Trump‘s redistricting efforts in Texas is some “bull***” on Real Time With Bill Maher. On Friday, August 8, the late-night host sat down with interview guest, political commentator George Will, and panel guests, former Dr. Phil star and ESPN’s “First Take” host Stephen A. Smith. During the panel segment, Maher directly asked McGraw — who Trump appointed the commissioner of his Religious Liberty Commission — asked the TV personality if he thought the redistricting in Texas was “some bull***.” “In the past, states do this after the census, Ok? You get the census every 10 years. You find out, oh, different number of people. Sometimes it makes sense. You have to redraw districts and so forth,” Maher said, setting up the topic. He continued of the gerrymandering, “Now Trump wants a do-over. They did it after 2020 in Texas, and he’s...

Drew Sidora dug deep during Season 2 of the Bounce TV hit comedy Mind Your Business. Particularly, while shooting the recent episode “Tick Tock” that sees The Real Housewives of Atlanta star’s character Aaliyah told she had endometriosis, a condition that can mimic pregnancy symptoms but also potentially cause fertility issues in women. It’s an emotional blow for the 40-year-old divorcee and experience inspired by writer Staci Harris’s own struggles. “I was diagnosed about 10 years ago,” she said. “I had to have a laparoscopy where I had to have consistent scar tissue removed. Making personal issues I’ve had, though, part of my work has been important to me. Drew dove right in. She didn’t make it about herself. She took the story and pulled it from her own. I didn’t even know she had struggles. It is just a great episode. I was proud of...

Bill Maher Issues Blunt Response to ‘Superman’ Star Dean Cain Joining Ice
Image
Bill Maher issued a blunt response to Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star Dean Cain joining Ice. On the Friday, Aug. 8 episode of Real Time With Bill Maher, the late-night host, 69, didn’t hold back with his thoughts on the 59-year-old actor signing up to be part of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Ice going around there with their masks, throwing people into vans—not popular. And yet, [Donald Trump is] doubling down on unpopular,” Maher said in his segue to the topic. “I mean, the Ice thing? They just need more people, so they’re having a big recruitment program. No age limit now, they announced this week. No matter how young you are, you can be 18, you can be old as dirt. If you like wearing a mask and throwing people in a van.” After noting there is a $50,000 signing bonus for those who sign up for Ice,...

‘Resident Alien’ Boss Breaks Down Series Finale & Reveals Major First for Show
Image
[Warning: The following post contains major spoilers about the series finale of Resident Alien, Season 4 Episode 10, “The End is Here.”] The end is here, alright. And we’re not Ok with it. One of the best sci-fi shows of the past decade has left our orbit in a series finale that was as full of heart, hope, and humor as it has been since Patience, Colorado’s Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle was first taken over by a Law & Order-loving alien with an unpronounceable name (the Emmy-robbed Alan Tudyk). Thankfully, it was full of resolved storylines and wonderfully set-up futures for our favorite humans, as well. That’s due in large part to creator and showrunner Chris Sheridan‘s suspicion that the series wasn’t long for this world after its move from Syfy to USA for the fourth season. “I knew going into it that this was likely going to be our final season,” he told us back in July ...

After the rescue Jake was overcome with emotion and embraced Keith. Although she has appeared as a special guest star since her departure, Giddish has not been a regular cast member since Season 24 Episode 9, “And a Trauma in a Pear Tree,” when Rollins married Ada Dominick Carisi Jr. (Peter Scanavino) and left the squad to teach at Fordham University. Reunited with her old squad, Giddish is thrilled to be back. She shared her happiness in an interview with Extra, where the Svu actress discussed her return as a series regular and what it means for both the show and her character. ‘Wednesday’: Who Is Morticia’s Sister Ophelia?
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Wednesday Season 2, Part 1.] Wednesday‘s second season is half over, but a big question looms as we head into Part 2 this September. Who is Morticia’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) sister, Ophelia? While she’s only been mentioned by Morticia onscreen, we can’t help but wonder if she’ll make an appearance before the season is through, with the buildup towards the second half. As fans saw in Part 1, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) had begun to abuse her psychic abilities, and she experienced black tears, a seizure spell, and more symptoms from trying to use her gift to solve the mystery of who was behind Jericho’s murderous murder of crows. As viewers learned, it was Judi Spannegel (Heather Matarazzo) who was behind the deadly attacks as she continued her father’s legacy of experimenting on Outcasts in the basement of Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. According to Morticia, Ophelia pushed her abilities to the extreme...

Making ‘Pee-wee as Himself’ Nearly Broke Director Matt Wolf
Image
“Pee-wee as Himself” offers a refreshing contrast to celebrity documentaries shaped by estate-approved image control. Director Matt Wolf approached the film as a gay man profoundly influenced by “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and its message of non-conformity — and as someone eager to unpack the complexity of Paul Reubens, a brilliant artist who re-entered the closet and disappeared behind his iconic persona to thrive in Hollywood.

However, Wolf didn’t expect the project to nearly break him. It changed him personally and professionally — but it also earned five Emmy nominations, including Best Director. On this week’s Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, he reflected on the toll of making a film about his idol.

Wolf’s introduction to Reubens came through Josh and Benny Safdie, who would later come aboard as producers.

“Paul had met with other directors whom he either didn’t connect with artistically or who were not open to his level of involvement,...
