Miniseries are definitely having a moment in the zeitgeist right now. They offer a middle ground between a long-form TV series that can span multiple seasons and a single film. In fact, one could argue that a major issue with modern miniseries is that they tend to play like 10-hour-long movies as opposed to an episodic series. Still, some manage to get it right, and there are many outstanding miniseries throughout the 2020s.
To be clear, a miniseries offers a complete story arc in a predetermined number of episodes. They don't go on for years, which can sometimes be a good thing for attracting talent.

More than just typical scary shows, there is something hauntingly atmospheric about gothic horror television series. Drawing primarily from European folklore, these stories involve the supernatural malevolence normally associated with ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and other paranormal creatures from the region. Slashers and zombies need not apply here, nor monsters originating from other parts of the world, these are more old world terrors. There is also a quiet romanticism about gothic horror stories, often involving forbidden temptation and dangerous liaisons.
From period pieces capturing the historical depictions of these scary stories to dramatic modern retellings, there are plenty of popular gothic horror shows to check out.

You know how, when an ornery cat finally sidles up to you and rubs itself against your legs, you pretend not to notice, because acknowledging the change in any fashion just makes the cat hiss and run away? That's how I feel about Tommy in this week's "Landman."

[Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Landman Season 2 Episode 7, “Forever Is an Instant.”] Landman isn’t a sappy show. Far from. In fact, it’s probably best known for all of the hilariously caustic and cynical zingers that get slung around without abandon by its characters. However, Sunday’s (December 28) new episode was surprisingly mushy… at least, at the end. The episode started with its usual quippy cadence. Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) managed to ruin a weekend away with Angela (Ali Larter) by accidentally showing his junk to a hotel attendant delivering a surprise breakfast while he was still in bed… with the remnants of his Cialis overload in full view. This devolved into an argument...

If there was ever a channel or platform to steer the course of prestige television in the era's nascent period, it's HBO. The premium cable channel had been producing original programming for years, but in the '90s, its shows saw a significant jump in quality. Whether it was trend-setting sitcoms or searingly intimate crime dramas, the channel became the place for must-watch television. With its premium cable distinction, which also allowed for greater creative freedom, the channel has taken full advantage of that freedom across its diverse original series lineup.

It started with a begrudging babysitter dynamic and Farrah Fawcett hairspray and ended with an emotional promise to die together. We’re talking, of course, about the beloved — and entirely unexpected — bond between Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Steve (Joe Keery).
The pair find themselves put to the test in Stranger Things’ fifth and final season, when Dustin, who is grieving the death of Eddie (Joseph Quinn), lashes out at his best friend. “That relationship is an interesting one,” Keery shares. “A lot of the fuel for my character, I think, is my worry for him and how that might come off.”

Mad Max lives. In Stranger Things 5’s seventh episode, the Hawkins teen, played by Sadie Sink, escapes Camazotz and wakes up in her hospital bed face-to-face with Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), who has been by her side for almost two years.
“When a scene is so beautifully written and a moment is as touching as that is, it makes my job easier to connect with Max,” Sink . “And when Caleb is giving such an incredible performance as well, I just felt very lucky to be in that room.”
The emotional impact was felt by everyone on set. Once director Shawn Levy called action, the “energy switched” for McLaughlin as he looked into Sink’s eyes.

In Season 5 of Netflix's "Stranger Things," Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) resembles a tree riddled with holes — a stark contrast from his original fleshy appearance.
In an interview with People, Barrie Gower, the head of the "Stranger Things" makeup effects department, explained that this new version of the monster was primarily created with CGI, as opposed to the more practical-based creature we saw in Season 4.
"[Vecna] evolved to the point where his body was just made up of these mutated vines and things, rather than being 100% human form," said Gower. "He wanted the ability to be able to see through his body as well,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from Season 5, Volume 2 of “Stranger Things, now streaming on Netflix.
Jamie Campbell Bower is used to playing the big bad — whether his name is Vecna, One or Henry. But in Volume 2 of “Stranger Things,” he takes the character a step further into possibly his creepiest yet, a cult-leader-like performance as Mr. WhatsIt.
“Jim Jones was an early reference for me,” Bower says, citing the leader of the cult the Peoples Temple, who in November 1978 led more than 900 of his followers to commit mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. “He was on the mood board, even...

In 2023, Jodi Hildebrandt was arrested alongside popular YouTuber Ruby Franke in Utah. In the early 2000s, Josh Schwartz's "The O.C." was the Og guilty pleasure show. It was basically a soap but a heightened and well-written one, set in California's Newport Beach, where rich people were the average citizen.
The series aired on Fox for four seasons, starting in 2003. In 2007, after 92 episodes (including a fourth and final shortened season that consisted of 16 episodes instead of the regular 24-25), Fox cancelled the series due to a steady downward trend in ratings.
In addition, a key narrative change in Season 4 served as a harbinger for the show's eventual end.

As the highest honor a television series can receive, the Emmys bestow both prestige and visibility on winning shows. Even if you've never watched them, you can probably name some of the biggest winners. "Game of Thrones" picked up an impressive 59 statues, "The West Wing" received 26 awards, and "The Sopranos" racked up 21. It's unlikely we'll forget about these TV powerhouses anytime soon.
But awards wins don't guarantee popularity or longevity. Indeed, some Emmy-winning shows haven't stood the test of time, for various reasons. Maybe it was because they got outshone in their own genre by another more popular series, maybe...

It took some time for Eddie Murphy to forgive David Spade for his infamous “Saturday Night Live” dig.
During a recent episode of his “Fly on the Wall” podcast, Spade said it took him “25 years” to win back fellow “SNL” alum Murphy after taking a shot at his film “Vampire in Brooklyn” during a “Weekend Update” segment.
“It was weird going from being a super fan to having him hate me overnight, and to try to win him back for the last 25 years,” Spade said.
“We had some bumps in the road along the way, early on,” he added. “I was on ‘Weekend Update,...
