What a very bland movie, I know it was a live-action Disney movie but by half way through the movie I just wanted to shut it off. So how come did I rate it a 6/10? The last 30 minutes of the movie (not the last fifteen but the fifteen minutes before it.) There's one sequence that will literally move you to tears. The score is amazing, the timing is just right and it'll surely make up for the dull movie. Without that sequence, I probably would've rated it a 3/10. I know they try to make it appealing to kids, but if it the movie was more serious then I say we could've had a great movie. If you're looking for a good Disney film, then I say skip it. But, if your a father to daughter(s), I say see it - a lot of fathers can relate to this (although the movie is highly over exaggerated.) For a rather dull movie, it does have a lot of heart.
What makes For Better or for Worse special is the fact that its realistic. Sure it doesn't rank in the humor of Calvin and Hobbes, but it has a lot of heart. Something you won't see with comic strips (in this case a TV show adaption) is aging in the characters. For Better or for Worse ages its characters and succeeds. It deals with real issues like dates, death of an animal and adjustment to certain things. It's family safe and even if it wasn't i'd still recommend it to kids of all ages. Not only is it enjoyable for the young ones, adults will probably tune in to watch it as well. Watching For Better or for Worse is like watching your own family grow up. You see the good, the bad and the ugly but you mainly see the good. If you can still find it, I recommend it highly.
Love on the Side (a.k.a Deluxe Combo Platter - according to my DVD) is actually a pleasant surprise. Sure it doesn't match up with romantic comedies like Harold & Maude, and There's Something About Mary, but seriously, what romantic comedy does now-a-days? It's unfortunate that this movie isn't well known because it could've became really popular, or it could've been one of those indies which lies on the movie store shelf for ages. I say if you find it, watch it. It's not for all tastes because some scenes drag on too long but you could say its part of its charm. I recommend this film to romantic comedy lovers or if you've seen it and looking for another film similar to this, I recommend Mambo Italiano. Take a slice, relax and enjoy.
