No, I have not seen It Happened Last Night, but I imagine Rob Reiner and the screenwriters could've taken some sub conscious influence from that feature when making this flick. That being said, I do dig the chemistry between John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga, as predictable as their outcome is. Seeing an obnoxious sleaze and a stuck up student in college getting stuck on a trip to California for different reasons is as easy to comprehend as anything else in the flick, but the circumstances lead to some silly outcomes between the two going against societal norms. Something as simple as the two beginning and concluding their arc on the rooftop of their college dormitory is a brilliant example of how rebellious they were deep down inside.
Out of Rob Reiner's first 7 features (the ones that people hold in the highest regard), this one is probably his weakest one, but it's got just enough humor and heart to go around. It might not have redefined its genre or anything like that, and that's fine as it is. Sometimes, we just need a goofy but ultimately humorous love story that's hard to hate.

I will cut the movie's flaws some slack considering that there's still two more Avatar sequels currently in pre production, but let's just say that certain events in Fire & Ash feel like they could have been handled back in Way of Water. Most of the issues with this film are admittedly not big deals given how much gets at stake with between the Pandora natives and the RDA. If anything, the mere presence of the Mangkwan tribe shows that there's more to unpack in the world of Pandora beyond the spiritual presence of Eywa. Also, nearly every scene with Quaritch is a blast from his grimacing presence, and Varang is simultaneously frightening and seductive all at once. Lastly, Spider from the previous film might be the best character in the whole film as his arc comes to a satisfactory payoff within his personal journey as a human living on Pandora in peace and harmony. Not much else to add other than it's a fun time to behold, even if it wasn't quite worth waiting three years for.
Finding romance in crazy adventures like this are always a treat, especially with charming growing chemistry between Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. This is the type of comical affair made for adventure stories, from a crazy macguffin that the main character has to retrieve to save their loved ones, to finding human connection in the most unlikely of places (in this case, the Colombian rainforests), to opponents consisting of criminals and other deadly forces, the list goes on. Diane Thomas's screenplay translates well into blending comedy and drama within serious circumstances, and the cast as a whole are a blast to see from their individual roles alone. It's imaginative yet grounded enough to keep the overall adventure exciting and ruthless all at the same time. All in all a good time and a reminder that human bondage can be found beyond the fiction you conceive.
