I didn't see 28 days later, and I didn't see 28 weeks later. I came into this completely blind and maybe I should have watched the first two and that would have helped? I don't know.
First, this to me is not a horror movie or a horror movie... It's more gore and heavy nudity. I enjoyed the movie but my mother likes horror films to be scared and this one didn't appeal to her at all, so be aware of that going into it.
Second, the movie takes a lot of jumps that will take you out of it and break your suspension of disbelief. There are character motivations and actions that simply make no sense, and they get in situations that you feel they SHOULD know not to get themselves into. Either they are extremely naive, or way too careless, the writing feels very weak because of it, which is a shame because it's an interesting story at least in the beginning.
The actors were all good and seemingly fitting for the roles so no problems there, I even enjoyed Ralph Fiennes and the role he played reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, he has a sort of magical quality to him but without the magic, if that makes sense.
I don't want to spoil this so I'll just end with if you like a lot of blood and guts and nudity this will be for you, but it feels very intentional for shock value when it's really not needed. I'm guessing it was to help keep things interesting as it is a long movie. It also feels like it's setting up for a sequel.
I would have rated this lower because of the weak script and lacking any real sense of horror, but the acting was good and I watched for the almost 2 hours and enjoyed certain aspects of it, specially from not knowing anything about the franchise or the director.

I have yet to read the books so this review is mostly about the movie itself. I enjoyed it at first, it had an interesting main character and although it started out as a movie about adversity it eventually shifted into the more unrealistic. They did a good job of showing that everyone was going through their own things, and it doesn't overload you on a certain topic, but there are a few things that are obvious that don't feel right (I wont touch on them here) but if you watch the movie you'll figure it out.
It kept me watching till the end, so at the very least it's entertaining, you may enjoy it.

For being a sci-fi flick it does ok. It doesn't introduce anything groundbreaking but it is something different. Does it hold up to other sci-fi films? I'd say no, but if you're looking for an average film to burn 2 hours with this does the job.
I will say that considering who it was written and directed by, there was a much higher expectation. After watching a film like Parasite, which was very well done, this was rather tame. I think part of it is the narration and the other part was the writing. Acting wise I think everyone did a fine job, there were themes that were put out there that didn't quite hit or didn't really matter as the story unfolds, and while I could sympathize with the characters and the situations, the actions and consequences of them didn't carry much weight.
This didn't seem to be set up for a sequel and probably for the best, but I'd be curious to see if a part 2 would have more to offer. Overall I gave it a 6 and likely wont see it again.
