Let's be honest, Kamal has lost his aura. There is no denying it. He is still trying the play the roles of his prime but sadly, the prime has left the building a long time back.
Here you need to hand it to Rajnikanth. In spite of the age, the charisma still persists and while he also does not have the aura from say 10 years back, he still looks classy and massy on screen.
Thug Life is designed as a gangster revenge story but unfortunately, the lead gangsters all look like lions way past their prime and it feels like a septuagenarian fight club. The only exceptions are Ali Fazal and STR who keep this movie interesting but Fazal has been criminally underutilized especially given his mastery of this genre post Mirzapur.
Kamal really looks his age and even worse, his acting and movements feel the same. STR is the saving grace of this movie and I was actually impressed by how he managed to hold a sinking ship together but unfortunately the leaks were far beyond his capability to fix. What we needed was a younger protagonist and the movie would have been a different animal entirely.
There are very few redeeming aspects in this movie and this is definitely one for the when you're not going to focus, run it in the background or skip it altogether.
