This movie has been on my radar for a while after I heard about it on Twitter.

The cinematography is beautiful. I know that's a strange thing to say about a horror/thriller film, but you must see Harry Young's work in this to understand what I mean. Nino Russell's musical score doesn't overpower the scenes and gives a chilling ambiance.

The small cast is phenomenal, which is on the surprising side with a reported budget of £1,000 (approximately $1200). Daniel Oldroyd plays Richard, who isn't convinced that there is a witch, at first, while Thomas, William Young, knows that something evil controls the woods. The strange awkwardness between the two soldiers is a delight to watch; neither trust the other, but understand they must work together for survival.

The intensity maintained throughout the film kept me satisfied and intrigued until the final moment. If you are looking for a strong psychological thriller in a historical setting, I strongly urge you to watch Hex. I wasn't disappointed.

Gaslighting is manipulating someone by psychological means into questioning their sanity. That is how Pet Sematary (2019) made me feel; not to single out this film, most remakes make me feel this way. I know the story, I've read and seen it several times, yet as I watched I began questioning everything that is true. I get it. Remakes are designed to bring in a new audience (money) and piss off fans of the original. This one, in particular, was done horribly. I expected more suspense and thrills than what I got. The effects were bland and expected and ordinary. When you have a story like this, making changes can be a slippery slope, and nothing they did made it better, but tore it apart. At least they didn't change the character names, which, now that I think about it, might have been better if a new family had moved into the house; but what to do about Judd? The sound effects, score, and the cute kitties who played Church were the best elements of the movie. John Lithgow as Judd was also a good choice, and the twins playing Gage were uncannily similar looking to the actor in the original. But these few things didn't make up for the missed elements or even the overplayed ones. The cover of Pet Sematary by the Ramones was dreadful, too. Oh, I almost forgot, I liked the funeral procession of children wearing masks, taking the dog to the Pet Sematary was a nice touch, and added something macabre. When the ending finally came, I rolled my eyes and groaned. It was too much. All these things I've mentioned (and more), describe how the creators of this film gaslighted me. But guess what? I know the truth, that's not really what happened. Ask anyone. They'll tell a completely different story than what they tried to manipulate into my mind.

I'm amazed that they found actors who were so awful they almost made Lindsay Lohan look good(ish). Then again, what should I expect from a direct to video on demand release? However, the tactics of bad acting didn't make her appear any better, making the fact that she can't act more prominent. At least her role was minimal. What's with the dirty lens filter? That's just weird and out of place. They don't transform like other werewolves I've seen, which I guess is alright, but I couldn't tell the difference between vampire and wolf. Detective Kristy Wolfe is a vampire, isn't she? Wait. What? She's a werewolf, too? I guess I should've known that based on her last name. This film is so low budget that they couldn't afford to run to Party City for a few werewolf masks. Seriously, had they not said they were werewolves, I would've continued to think they were vampires. I cannot express the horror I felt watching Among the Shadows, and not because it was scary. This has to be the worst movie I've ever tortured myself with, and it gives me great pleasure to give this movie 0 out of 5 Stars.
