A mix of classic Lovecraft elements, combined with characters that you could care less about, in an overlong movie where everyone makes stupid decisions leading to dire consequences: equals another remake that failed overall. Watch the original instead.
Watching this movie was a complete waste of my time, unfortunately the producers decided that the original "just wasn't good enough", and it needed to be reworked, and bought into the 21st century. The only improvement over the original was Church the cat. Leave this one buried and forgotten.
First off I just wanted to say that I have seen all of Dario Argento's major movies except "The Five Days of Milan", and loved them all to various degrees, the weakest in my mind being "The Phantom of the Opera". The Mother of Tears" completes the "Three Mothers" trilogy (the other 2 being "Suspiria" and "Inferno") in a furious and violent fashion that sometimes seems to borrow from or pays homage to his past movies with its violent scenes. "The Mother of Tears" is a witch, she is the survivor, of three sisters, and is the "Cruelest of them all". This movie is easy to watch, gets going right away, and doesn't drag. It delivers the goods in the gore department in ways that most movies wouldn't dare to tread. The score by Claudio Simonetti is first rate and helps to create tension. The acting is good with Asia and Daria reuniting with Dario to finish the trilogy. If there is a down side it's the ending, which is "Quick" and could have been better (many of Dario's endings are quick wrap ups though)and some of the witches are a little dopey acting. This is not a direct to video film; it was shown in the U.S. in a few major cities in the early summer of 2008. Wrapping up his trilogy after 28 years Argento crafts a film that was worth the wait. Run a Search for Dario's other movies and see what makes him a true Master of Horror.
