"Your Aunt's like something out of Fright Night!" Shot in Canada but set in New York State "The Kiss" starts off in Africa in 1963. Onboard a night train a woman viciously attacks her young niece, passing on a curse. Then on to 1988, teenager Amy (Meredith Salenger) is enjoying a good life but then her mother dies after being involved in a nasty traffic accident. Her estranged sultry Aunt Felice (played by the beautiful Joanna Pacula) shows up, bringing an horrific secret with her. I watched this back in the day on VHS and have now just enjoyed revisiting it thanks to Talking Pictures TV (UK). It's no classic but does have enough ingredients such as gory deaths, interesting plot, hot women and a bit of sex to make it a worthwhile watch. The practical effects are good, no horrible CGI here, a neck stabbing using a pair of scissors being a highlight. One bad gaff has a crew member visible in a hotel lobby but other than that this film gets no complaints from me.
"We can't help him - he's dead." Young and (very) attractive babysitter Amanda (Susan George) arrives at a large old "musty" house to sit for three year old Tara while the boy's mother (played by Honor Blackman) and her new partner (George Cole) go out for the evening. She is soon spooked by noises and a face at the window, a maniac has escaped from the asylum and he wants to get inside the house! This effective British psycho thriller is perhaps the first to feature a babysitter in peril, it was made 7 years before John Carpenter's slasher classic "Halloween". I can fondly remember staying up to watch "Fright" on late night TV when I was a kid and it certainly frightened me. Many years later and I have just re-watched it but this time on Blu-ray, sadly it didn't have the same terrifying effect but I still enjoyed it very much. Susan George is one of my favourite actresses and she is wonderful in this. Indeed the whole cast is good, fans of vintage British TV should enjoy seeing Cole and a young Dennis Waterman, who both starred in the brilliant series "Minder", in the same film, though they don't really share any scenes together. Most of the plot takes place in the wonderful house, the sets are superb, and the excellent musical score helps create genuine tension. The movie features some strong violence plus a sexual assault however the body count is minimal. The film offers a nice glimpse of early 1970's England though Waterman's sexist dialogue today sounds very dated. Many horror movies feature characters watching George A Romero's classic "Night of the Living Dead" on TV in the background, in "Fright" Hammer's "Plague of the Zombies" is seen on a black and white TV at the house, I absolutely loved this detail!
I saw the trailer for "Gags the Clown" on one of my DVDs, found a cheap copy for sale online so I bought one. One night in May 2018 a sinister clown clutching black balloons is sighted across Green Bay, Wisconsin. Several people including TV reporters, the police, a fake army veteran podcaster and a bunch of annoying teens search the city looking for him. I always take no notice of ratings or reviews before watching a movie for the first time but I knew that this was going to be poor and I proved myself right. We have a cast of bad actors playing hugely unlikable characters, the film is meant to be a horror/comedy but there is very little of either. It is boring and the end credits couldn't roll soon enough. Most of the film is shot in the Found Footage style (yawn) though several parts obviously were not, and the picture is very dark in places. I have seen lots of clown horror movies, this garbage rates as one of the worst!
