This movie doesn't take itself seriously and delivers strong action sequences. Considering you don't pay for it in the theaters and you probably will catch it on TV like me, you have nothing to lose but to enjoy a 90 min of brain relaxation with jungle adrenaline. The Asian island setting is lovely to watch with some breathtaking shots of coastal splendor, including a boat cruising a turquoise blue lagoon. Michael Rooker and Temuera Morrison bring class to the cast, their supporting roles are enjoyable to watch, as always with those two. Maybe it's time for a variation of the late great Ebert rule for Emmet Walsh: "No movie starring Temuera Morrison and/or Michael Rooker can't be altogether bad" I think that's true. I saw it in HD, it was nicely shot, action sequences weren't bad except for some really shaky camera during some fist fights. It's not first class, but satisfying. Million dollar man's son is a bit stiff, but he's snatching those sculls not for a quick Hamlet moment, but to smash them into the wall, so he's forgiven. Good movie to kill time and relax your brain.
I really don't understand why so many people hate this movie. After all, it's not conceived to be a straightforward drama or thriller with a definitive thick plot or clichéd Hollywood characterization. It is just a exercise in style, an experiment with the then-new digital shooting equipment and came out like an abstract "tour-de-force" in dark imagery. I personally find this Mike Figgis outing very similar to a Francis Bacon paintings. The plot - a group of Hollow and pretentious B- movie business people (a great ensemble cast) are put in disturbing physical and emotional frames of inexplicable events, that are interchanging all the time, so they finally lose themselves in dark fantasy and shameful desires and fears, projected in reality. No real special effects, just a couple of decadent, fantastic "inverted colors" scenes of making "dead love" and some slick angle-play. The scene of the "Lunch In The Dungeon", that guest- stars John Malkovitch in his best "amploa" - A Wonderfully Creepy stranger full of secrets, is one of the best in indie cinema I've witnessed. I recommend this title to experiment junkies, but also to people who love the dark exploitation-themed art in movies and paintings. It's worth the journey.
This is a marvelous movie.
More than a psychological abyss than a straight horror, this little dagger stabs deeper than most of the pretentious psycho thrillers will ever.
Although this masterpiece is not for everyone. It offers a bunch of pretty disturbing scenes, but one has to watch it at least twice, in order to fully comprehend it's twisted metaphoric.
If you find this movie weird, just stop and think about how weirder is the whole mankind. Instead. Horrible thurths are revealed through this genius metaphor of vampyrism.
Cult director Shinya Tsukamoto (whom I'm a devotee) gives the hell out of a performance. This guy is either crazy, either true genius, either both. I'I'm so very impressed.
And a la fin, a quote from marebito: "Horror, is actually an ancient wisdom that we find deep in the memory of our souls....."
