Sheridan's novella writing style is wearing thin, often resulting in thinly woven plots, obvious outcomes, and predictability... S1:E1+2 clearly showcased Sheridan's inabilities as a writer, producer, and director, with his irrational pacing, poor scripting, and abusive one-liners... The direction Hamm received was unworthy, while the juvenile chaos injected by the ex & daughter seriously muddies the waters, to the point that I'm simply fast-forwarding through their scenes. Let's hope significant changes are in store, because as it stands, with its shallow characterizations, poor production values, it's likely to end much like Yellowstone, with crashing viewership, unable to hold an audience's attention, and for those exact same reasons, I never bothered with any of Sheridan's subsequent spinoffs, nor could I even endure finishing Yellowstone (which had nothing to do with Cosnter's subsequent departure).
While Francis Ford Coppola began to conceptualize this project as far back 1983, its outcome felt more improvisational than scripted; chaotic. I was initially excited at its prospects, weaving a story of Rome in America, but alas, I'm unsure if writer, producer, director Coppola had adequately prepared, documented, shared his vision with others in a tangible way. $120,000,000+ later, Coppola hasn't much to show for his efforts. There were so many frustrating aspects to the film, more than I care to recall. I honestly regret not taking heed of the overwhelming calls of the critics, as I remained hopeful. Unfortunately, it was indeed unpalatable. Perhaps much of the film's disjointness may still be lying on the cutting room's floor; could it possibly be re-edited... resurrected?
I had given it a 9 for seasons 1-3, but had to take at least 2 points away due to season 4 abysmal implosion. For the most part, Preacher was entertainingly engaging, especially for those of us who were raised in Catholicism, which eventually led to many of us ultimately rejecting all of its utter hypocrisy (eg: L. A. Diocese $1.5 Billion payouts), leading many of us into atheism. How can an insecure God create such a miserable existence, especially for children, while actually endorsing slavery?
Preacher is without a doubt intentionally cynical, yet hold's truths.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure what happened to this production by the time it hit season 4, as it literally became so juvenile, so utterly absurdly ludicrously unrelatable, with its way, way, way over the top violence, as simple filler fodder, I found myself scrubbing through much of the final season. I'm by no means a prude, but whomever thought this would bring appropriate closure to the series, couldn't have been more wrong.
Watch and enjoy season 1-3, but don't feel bad about scrubbing through season 4 just to find out how it ends.
